help!! lice I moved into this house wich is just carpet. There, I found some bottles for lice control. Now, my daughter was sent back from school because she has lice even in her body!!. She just started school monday for first time. So now, I am freaking out, because I never saw a lice in person. I know she didn't get it at school because all the other kids got checked for it. I have being itching like craZY since we moved here. I called some experts, and told them the situation, they agree that it must have being in the carpect from before we moved, and the CARPETS were not shampooed properly. My daugther was checked for lice at head start in pa before we moved to NC, and she was found to be free from it. That is why I am 100% sure she got it from this house. Now, the question is, how in the world do I get rid of it!! Please help. I am a very clean person. I hate to be treated, as if I dont cleAN MY HOUSE PROPERLY, WHICH WAS SOGESTED BY ONE OF THE TEACHERS. |
I remember getting them back when I was in grammar school and my mom wrapped all pillows and teddy bears in plastic washed all blanket and bedding in hot water ...she did all this while we were sitting there with threatment in our hair.....then she put plastic matress protectors on the beds and sprinkled salt on all the rugs then vaccummed them. Then repeated the salt and vaccuming a few times.......We never got them again after that...I think you have to leave the plastic on the pillow and bed for a few months to make sure anything living on them dies. This was a long time ago they may have come out with some new sprays or something you can spray the rugs and beds with....hope this helps. |
Aww, that's too bad that your daughter ended up with lice. I've always heard it was tranfered from kid to kid, but I can see where it could have been in your carpeting. Please don't let anyone make you feel like it's because your not a clean person!! Lice don't care, they are very easily picked up, I know because I raised 4 daughters, plus ran a home daycare and had issues with lice. There are many products you can buy at a drugstore that will help get rid of them. First of all, a good shampoo for you and your daughter, then I think you can get a spray to use around your home and beds, etc. You will need to launder everything that might be infected. Good luck and please don't feel like you are not clean enough, ask anyone with kids, chances are they have had a problem with lice also;) Martha & crew |
What kind of treatment did your mom used? |
It was called RID...Back them it was just a shampoo, but I just looked it up and it comes with a spray for your pillows and furniture her is the website. RID |
Lice like clean hair better than dirty. So clean people are more likely to get it. Typically adults that style their hair don't have it because blowdrying and other heated items like curling irons and straighteners kill them, and they don't like styling product like hair spray and gel. Lice cannot live that long without human contact, so unless you moved in the day they moved out, odds are she did pick it up at school or from someone else. Last year my kids picked it up from school, and 5 of my 6 (yikes!!) got it. I will not use RID or any other pesticides as they are heavily linked to cancer. Last year I heard so many horror stories, even from a lady that worked at the health department (ran into her at the store, thank God!) about how much of a risk of cancer there is from them. She told me the best thing to do was drench them in oil, let their hair sit under plastic wrap or a cap for at least an hour because it suffocates the lice, and pick them out with a comb. I didn't think that could really work, so I went and bought some holistic stuff. That stuff did pretty well, but didn't get rid of all of them apparently. So I went and did the oil thing and that worked better than anything!! After I went through their hair with the lice comb, they got showers, and I blow dried all their hair, on hot, for a long time. You have to be careful not to burn them (lol, obviously) but the blowdrying really helps. I also did the obvious wash of all the bedding. You can put all the stuffed animals in a garbage bag for a week or 2, and they will all die. Saves on washing. As far as carpeting, get a big box of salt, yes salt. It works for fleas too. Salt dehydrates them and they die. Salt, leave overnight, vacuum, repeat the next day, and then a week later. |
Mayonaise for a hair treatment will kill them also |
Do the eggs look like dandify? That is all I see in her hair. I have psoriasis, and I think that I see now is little flake,. But then again, I dont really know. I had done the rid, the salt on the carpet, AND i BOUGHT PLASTIC COVERS FOR EVERY PILLOW, AND MATRESS. i DID ALL OF THIS SINCE 4PM THIS AFTERNOON. sINCE IS DARK NOW, i WILL WAIT TILL TOMORROW TO CHECK AGAIN. THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE!!!! |
I have been very fortunate with 4 kids never had it but they say the lice look like sesame seeds and are attached to the hair. Good luck I feel for you.:aimeeyorkCOCO :aimeeyorkPEBBLES :aimeeyorkTRIXIE |
Tea Tree Oil! I work in a child care center and we have had issues with lice on a few occasions. The best thing you can do is bag everything that is soft or could have transfered lice to it and put it outside for at least 2 weeks. You have to be careful because even if you get all the adults out, the eggs will hatch and you will end up doing it all over again! Then, as a preventative from this point forward.... Tea Tree Oil It's strong smelly stuff, but the Lice don't like the smell of it so they won't attach to you. You can buy it at almost any drug store, walmart, target, and some grocery stores. Put a few drops in your shampoo and wash with it two or so times a week. (I would do more until you know for sure that it is out of your house). This is what we ALWAYS tell parents to do... and all the teachers I know swear by this too! ( I even know a teacher who hasn't been to a movie theater in 10 years because she is afraid of lice... and she swears by this!) Good Luck |

Yes tea tree oil is an excellent treatment and preventative. Its great to use all of the lice season to prevent it. |
Oh girl...I feel for you. Been there done that with my daughter. What happens with lice...you kill the bugs themselves...and 2 weeks later...the eggs hatch. The eggs are called nits. Ever hear the term....nit pickin' ? You need to wash her head with a lice shampoo...then use the nit comb to comb the nits out of her hair. They are stuck on the hair shaft. The easiest way to see them...outside in bright sunlight or a bright light indoors. Favorite spot for lice...the nap of the neck and behind the ears. Two weeks from the day you wash her hair....you need to do it again. Don't skip this step. Anything you can wash in hot water...wash. Her bedding, her clothes, the brush she uses...all of that. If you can't wash it and it's small enough...pack it all up in a plastic bag and leave for two weeks. There is also sprays you can buy for your furniture. I am told the heat from a blow dryer works wonders too. |

Both the lice and the nits are usually within 1/2 from the scalp itself, on the strands. The eggs will be firmly "glued" to the hair strands themselves, and be hard to pull off with your fingernails. If it is psoriasis, they will not be attached to the hair strands. |

They do not look like dandruff. If you take her outside in sunlight...the sunlight reflects off the nits. This was the easiest way for me to see them with the naked eye. While combing her hair out...have a small container with lice shampoo/water...rinse the comb in it. That is where you'll see the bugs themselves. You can try to feel the nits if you want...pull up a few strains of hair and slowly pull it between your finger and thumb... Schools see lice so often...I really doubt they're mistaken unfortunately. |
I feel your pain! This past summer my daughter caught them, I still cant pinpoint who it was from because we were so many places that were full of children i will tell you it was one of the worse things to get rid of.I would strongly advise you to stay away from over the counter shamppos such as rid and nix they are very toxic and harmful. The combs that come with those kits are useless. I bought this comb and its the best thing ever https://naturalginesis.com/cart/inde...d&productId=19 and used this shampoo https://naturalginesis.com/cart/inde...d&productId=16 It is safe and non toxic. Once you use the shampoo you have to be very persistant with the nit combing. I tired the vinegar, and mayonnaise neither worked for me. Here is a good site Cleaning the house for head lice |
I had a friend whose daughter was sent home from school 4 days in two weeks for this last month. Even though the other days in between she was checked by school officials and had no lice or eggs. Here are some ideas to help. I gave them to her and it cleared her daughter all up. - Put mayonaise on her hair and cover it with a shower cap and leave for 3 hours. Comb out with lice comb. - Put Dawn Original dishsoap on her hair and leave for 5 minutes and then wash out. (This should help get out all of the mayonaise.) - Rinse with White Vinegar and water and comb out with lice comb. - Condition with coconut conditioner (Suave makes some.) Supposedly it detracts future lice. - Then blowdry hair thoroughly. Straightening hair also helps keep them from reoccuring. - Don't forget to soak all brushes and combs and hair clips, bows, ponytail holders in alcohol and rinse with scalding hot water or throw them out. - Dry her sheets, pillows and comforter for 20 minutes on high everyday until the lice are gone. Don't forget stuffed animals. - Check for eggs about a half inch from the roots. - Tell her NOT to lean her head against other childrens (This is how my friends teenage daughter kept getting reinfected. She had a new cell phone and was taking pictures with an infected friend.) - Put her hair up in a ponytail and spray it with hairspray everyday until the lice problem is cleared up at her school. The mayonaise smothers live lice. The Dawn helps loosen any remaining eggs. The vinager reconditions her hair after the Dawn has stripped it. The coconut detracts them from returning. I would do the Dawn Wash and the Vinegar Rinse every other day for a week to make sure they stay gone. The coconut conditioner and the blowdrying can be everyday. Our pediatrician when I was younger told my mom that using the prescription stuff more than 1 or 2 times is useless because they become immune to it. She chose not to use it at all and go for the home remedies. |
I still cant see the lice!!!I am doing all the treatments. whashing and cleaning like crazy, but if they send her back on monday, I will have to tell them to come home and show me. I still think she does not have it. |
I don't know if they still make it but a few years ago (like 7-8 years) there was a spray you could spray on the hair that would make the eggs turn colors, I think bright pink so they are easier to see and thus remove. Does your daughter have dark hair? That may be causing part of the problem, making them more difficult to spot. I would definitely do all the washings mentioned here but also blow dry your and her hair completely everyday to prevent future outbreaks, even if you just focus on the roots and 1/2 of the hair shaft that should be good enough in a pinch. Bag all the toys and bleach and hot water wash everything else, throw out any hair barrettes or hair ties or scrunchies that you can't wash...I'd personally just toss her brush buy her a cheap new one then when you repeat the big mayo washing toss that one too and get her another one. Good luck. |
The school nurse should have shown them to you. I doubt if they say she had them they are incorrect though they see it all the time |

I am so very sorry for your lice woes. They are a pain in the patatootie. I worked in an elementary school for 13 years - although I am not an expert - have never ever had the critters nor have my children, this is what I have learned ..... Be sure your daughter understands that she didn't do anything wrong - a lot of kids feel dirty, or feel like they did something terrible to wind up with the lice. Be sure that your daughter understands that she can pick up lice from just about any article of clothing, brush, comb, etc. so it is very important that she NEVER EVER use someone else's comb, brush, jacket, sweater, and most of all NEVER NEVER EVER wear someone else's hat. All it takes is to pick up one stray nit and you are in the lice business. The lice shampoos are very harsh and if over used can actually be very harmful. Using occasionally should not cause a problem, but if you have a heavy infestation and they recurr there are electronic lice combs that are battery operated and kill the lice when you comb the hair. That way you are not subjecting your precious little one to harsh chemical pestisides on her head. Be sure to treat the entire home and everything washable. A commercial laundrymat is a perfect place to take big things that won't fit in y our home washer/dryer. Retreat every 7 to 10 days for as long as you see even one nit or one lice. Be sure to wash ALL of the clothes, towels, bath linens. treat curtains, carpets, etc. |
The eggs are very opalescent in the sunlight and firmly attached to the hair shaft. When my dtr got them we treated all of us and vacuumed everything we couldn't wash or put in plastic and retreated everything within 2 weeks and we got rid of them. It is so time consuming but you will get rid of them. Good luck |
Yes this is very time consuming. My husband says that he had it as a kid, and so all his sisters. He search strand by strand, and even him cant find them. Meanwhile. I have done some quimichal bombs in her hair; I have combed non stop, and wash,. We hispanics have a saying, that basically say : something good will come out of this. Now my daugther, who never let anyone comb her hair without a fight, is letting me do all of these; plus, she promised to wash her hair dally. |
When i was little i got lice at school cause i had really long hair and would wear it down. My mom used Mayonnaise and wrapped my hair for like an hr. She also used vinegar one time and picked them out one by one. I hate the smell tho! |
Medical statement diagnose "no LICE FOUNd" After being return home once again because of the lice problem, and vomiting from so much lice treatment, my husband took alisha to the naval hospital, where two nurses, and a naval DR did the necessary tests. She was found to not have lice, but a stage one psoriasis. Acording to the school rules in onslow county, a second opinion will not be acepted. In other words, My child is destined to suffer from a social handicap, and her mother has for 40 years. |
I thank all of you for being so helpfully. people like you make me want to log in every day to this site. Although I dont reply to many threats, I try to at least read them, and if I know something that might help others I would answer. Once again thanks. |
Peppermint Oil We had this problem and my hair dresser told us to buy a peppermint shampoo or put peppermint oil in our shampoo to prevent it in the future...seems to work no problems yet as for getting rid of it I used RID they have shampoo and sprays then washed everything in hot water |
