When it's all said and done this year we will probably end up having spent around 400-500 worth of goodies for the kiddo. Thankfully she is an only child! :eek: (Now granted, $150 of that alone is what the trampoline she is getting from 'Santa.') That does seem to be about the average price range for her for Christmas though. |
We usually don't spend $1000 on everyone that we buy for. But this year, each of our kids are getting Nintendo DS and some other stuff so that was a big chunk of money. And we still have to buy for quite a few more people. I would say normally we spend around $200 on each child. |

Wow I'm amazed at the amount of money being spent on Xmas gifts :eek:- makes me feel like Scrooge :rolleyes:because I've never spent more than $75.00 on each of my kids when they were young, now that they are adults I've upped that amount to $100.00 each, and same amount for their respective spouses. G-kids each get $75.00. Everybody seems happy enough and enjoy what they get. I used to tell them to make their wish list according to the number of gifts they would like to receive (1 big one or lots of little ones) and they still do it today.:) |

You know, what I always thought was difficult was making sure each kid had the same number of gifts. That matters a little more when they are smaller. It's hard though unless you're giving them both the same thing. I would end up making a list of everything I'd bought for each and making sure they were equal. Now that they are older, they just have to realize that something they wanted was more expensive than the other kid's gifts and that the other one got more things. |

That was a great video. It really makes you think. When we donate every year, I always make sure that Caitlin is a part of it. I want her to learn to help others. I just spent over $800.00 to pay for my twin sister's bills. She is struggling really bad this year. I will also have to pay for her 2 children to have a Christmas which will be another $200.00. My daughter is learning that family is more important then getting new stuff. She still wants more stuff but we can't do it this year. Family comes first!!!!! |

My mom just sent me an email yesterday that a co-worker of her's sent out. This woman and her 9 year old daughter both had really long hair and decided to cut it off and donate it to Locks of Love for their Christmas giving this year. She was so proud of her daughter for making the sacrifice and understanding the meaning of it all. Even better (but only superficially ;) ) is that they both look really great with the shorter hair. The mom looks years younger and the daughter looks fabulous too. I thought it was really sweet and she posted a bunch of pictures of before, during and after also. |
My kids are over indulged all year around,if I would just say NO ,,then Christmas could be better. I am the one that worries that they dont have enough,they are really great kids they would be happy with anything.Over Christmas vacation we will be voluntering at the humane society and the soup kitchen,also my kids got all their toys,clothes and coats that they dont use together to donate to the homeless shelter. |

Oh, wanted to add one other thing. I figure we are actually spending about $100 more on each kid this year but it will be for clothes. I usually just buy things as they need it and they use their own money to buy things also but when it comes to things that aren't really "necessary", they don't usually get them. So I plan on wrapping each of them a $100 bill with a note saying that we (me and the girls) are going shopping right after Christmas for winter clothes that THEY want. This is probably money I would have spent anyway on clothes but I think they'll enjoy it more for being able to shop with me and pick out stuff that I might not deem necessary (although there will be limits of course). And knowing them, they'll be pretty frugal too since it's a limited amount of money and they'll want to make the most of it. A gift with a "love message" and a "teaching lesson". ;) |
I have two teens. My oldest turns 17 on 12/23,so he wanted the Ipod touch. So I got it.250.00 Both kids wanted the xbox 360 with Guitar Hero World Tour,that is over $600.00. My daughter wanted Nightmare Before Christmas Bed set $150.00 I also get them the staples.Perfume/Cologne socks underwear,cd's . My kids love their stockings the best. I individually wrap everything..I buy for my crew first and then buy for the others...When they are younger you can get away with more.Bigger Kids..bigger price tags...We've been blessed with my husbands side business (roofing) and as long as I've been buying the kids electonics they use them everyday,so I feel I get my moneys worth TEN FOLD!!!! |
I think that how much is "okay" to spend on Christmas is different for every person and there is nothing wrong with that. I myself grew up fortunate because my mother relied on welfare and organizations to provide christmas gifts for us kids. I think that as I got older I appreciated Christmas more and just giving to other people because of it. I am now in college and make all my gifts. I have 9 siblings, 5 parents (two parents, two step-parents, and one ex-step parent), and they all seem to really enjoy hand made presents. Like this year: I'll make calendars for my parents that have pictures of us kids in them Handmade Coloring books for the lil kids Handmade Candles for the women Jars w/mixed recipes: cocoa mix, cake mix, etc. I will buy cookie tins from Goodwill (they have a 50% sale coming up):p and fill them with treats such as christmas cookies and peanut butter brittle I think we remember homemade gifts vs. store bought ones more. ;) |
Well I don't have any kids myself but I have a neice and nephews to buy for. I usually end up spending about $100 to $150 on each of them. I will tell you all that when I was little I believed in Santa Claus until I was in Junior High (but I didn't tell anyone) because I would always try to add up how much all my presents cost and once I got to over $100 I thought there HAS to be a Santa because there is no way a mom and dad would have THAT much money to buy gifts for all of us so there just has to be a santa that helps them!! LOL |

Anyway thank you for posting that video. It brought back the year my boys were small and didn't get what they wanted for Christmas because it was over the top. They were so upset that I decided right then they would not get anything next Christmas. Starting in July I taught them how to mix, pour, fire and paint ceramic pieces for gifts. I also bought a book on dough art and they made, baked and painted what they molded by hand and by cutters. Two wrote poems and one drew different pictures. They had such a wonderful time. Then before Christmas we took some things to the old folks home and some just cried. That about tore my boys heart out. We then took some things to kids who were in the hospital that were either not doing well at all, or were from poor homes. They were totally humbled. My boys are grown men, and they still talk about that Christmas and how it changed their view on Christmas. Now it's wonderful to see how they manage to do the same with their kids. |

My budget is - $300. split between my son and D-I-L and $300.00 for my daughter....I have needed to cut back for a few years now..BUT I love giving at Christmas! My kids are not spoiled by any means. Throughout the year they didnt receive every new gadget or new clothing style that came out ...We waited for Christmas.....They grew up to be perfectly fine adults and no one would ever consider them as spoiled. I still remember when I was little waking up Christmas morning peeking around the corner to find a living room floor covered with gifts then having to wait for my grandparents to arrive to watch me, my sister and brothers open our gifts!! lol....To be young again!!! Thanks everyone for the great comments. My daughter is making me something for Christmas. I will tell you what, I rather have her then anything that money can buy. I love it when she makes me something. |
