Default Storage unit warning

Today was the worst day ever for me but in at least one way I was very lucky!!
My husband and I have a storage unit for all of our things right now since we're living with my parents. Everything except things we absolutely need are in it. Well late this afternoon I get a phone call from the storage place telling me they had a break in involving about 12 units or so and mine was one of them...That phone call was the one thing to push me over the edge today...I get over there and the girl tells me that we may luck out because my row so far has only had the latches cut, nothing has been stolen fro the other units so far and so they were thinking that the people were returning tonight to clean them out. Luckily we were one of those that just had the latch cut, from what we could tell nothing was missing and I am so grateful we have everything from sentimental items to paperwork with vital personal info on them. Unfortunately the people in the row behind ours weren't as lucky and some of them had their units completely emptied. I feel so bad for them.
So for any of you who may have things in storage, you may want to go check on your unit, or something, anything to maybe try and secure your stuff better...It's so sad that people would do something like this, and around the holidays...Some people can be so low....

That is awful. I'm so sorry to hear that.

People who steal from others....I just don't get it. What makes people think it's OK to take something that belongs to someone else? It's just so messed up.

We had this happen to us a few years back. We rented a storage for our boat, and some odds and ends. The owner called and told us the same thing, I went up there(hubby was gone that day) and met a deputy up there, they had to take finger prints, so, of course, that messed up the glove box in it. Then we had the stereo stolen out of it, slalom ski, the expensive life jackets, 4 wheels for our sons truck, tractor tires, weed eater, can't remember what else, but, it was over $2000 stolen. Of course, no ins. on it, so we couldn't get reimbursed for anything that was taken. A few mos. on down the road, found out it was the owners son that had stolen the stuff, he fessed up about it when they found out he had broken in to a church. He had to spend like 2 years in jail has been out a few years now, we've never gotten a dime back of what he took from us

I'm a manager of a ministorage facility. We haven't had any break ins (knock on wood) But I do tell renters that it would be better not to keep important papers in their unit just in case anything were to happen, whether it be a break in or a non payment auction.

I can't believe you didn't get money back after he confessed to stealing the stuff! They told us that even if it's a year from now, because the break in is on record, if we find out something was missing we can still file a claim.

Well sounds like you were lucky. But I'm afraid of the way things are and people loosing their jobs and life getting so tight and tough out here we are going to have more and more of this stuff happening. Where I live they have had break in to homes for guns and electronics and seems that the people did it to support their drug habit. The 2 of them were caught but ends up they where working with a pawn shop and the guy that owned that was telling them what he wanted. Now the pawn shop owner is in trouble as well. Now that is hard to believe and then I wanted who else was in on it. Because how would they have know which homes to hit. It sounds like maybe someone else that had some information was feeding either the pawn shop owner or the theives that were involved.

We've had it for like 9 months now and when we were out of state I was storing a lot of things like my PC hard drive and paper work at my parents, because I was so worried about a break in, but now that we are staying with them there is just no room for anything so we had to take a lot of stuff back to the storage, and I thought we were doing good because nothing had happened for the time we were gone. But since the break in happened I am reconsidering finding room over here again!

I can definitely see a lot more happening, though I know around here during the holidays break ins are pretty common especially for cars. This afternoon my dad parked his work truck outside a store while he was buying something for a job (he's a contractor) when he came back out to his truck, someone had stolen some $200 tool that he had.
It's sickening that people will steal from others. To go into someone's home or anything like that and take things, it's just sickening. I've known people who have had things like baby photos stolen, things that are irreplaceable and mean nothing to anyone else..

How did they get in? Any storage place that we've had has a gate & cameras.

That's what I have been wondering, The storage has cameras the gate locks after a certain hour, and you can't get in anyway without a code. All I know is they would have needed a truck because they wiped out units that had things like couches in them, so I don't know if it was an inside job by like an employee or if someone paid for a unit so that they would have access.
