dreadlocks? Howdy. Soooo, I'm a little crazy to begin with and am currently bored in a foreign country with little to amuse myself so I've decided to ive myself dreadlocks. haha. I have three years before We get back to the states and I go back to having a normal job so I fiure why not. :) Does anyone have dreads, or know anyone with them? Just curious. Like them, hate them, don't know what they are? |
good morning/afternoon in Germany I too lived three years in Germany (Grafenwoehr) and had some wonderful times, so many memories. I didn't know how much I'd miss it until I came home. I worked for the government in Vilseck and knew I was helping our soldiers there. There was always to much to do and never enough time to do it. I went on every bus trip available (in my spare time) to various towns and cities, what an experience. Where/what have you been doing since you arrived? |
Hi to Germany from me, also. My Dad was a Military Lifer and we lived in Augsburg for 3 years back in the 50's. Beautiful country and the castles are awesome. My stepdtr has had everything from blue streaks to black dreads(she's blond) and no matter what she wears, she's drop-dead georgeous. I never would have believed the dreads would look right on her, but they did. I'm 58 and, strange enough, I like them - on others, of course, not me:D. And, when they're kept neat, not just let go. |
Ohhh yay! Other military people! lol. Its so exciting when other people have some idea what i'm talking about:) My husband just got back from training in Graf and Vilseck. Its really nice down there, Its where i Picked up my yorkie from. I've been getting out on the economy whenever possible just to get used to it. Its much fun. So far we've only traveled a little since as an MP its hard to get more than 1 day off at a time. But we love it here. Thanks for the dread info. I figure worse case scenario, I hate them and cut my hair short again. No fear. It does always seem to grow back in some way shape or form. |
I say Go For It:thumbup::) and show us pics when they are done. |
Dreads are one of those things that fascinate me.:p I've always had so many questions about how they are done, how you keep them looking nice, how do you wash your hair, etc but I've never known anyone that has them and I feel weird asking a complete stranger!:D |
I saw a lovely young woman at the beach once with Dreds. She had blonde hair. It seemed to suit her. I saw a whole website once on how to do dreads... i think it takes time. So, yes... I like them on people. I saw one website how to do them on a Puli!:p (that dog with the dredlocks... too cute!!!) |
Thanks guys! I'll definitely post pictures. I'm so excited I ordered the kit last night so hopefully it'll come in the next couple weeks:):) maybe after I finish them i can get a puli. And then enter one of those "i look like my dog" contests. mwahahaha (thats my evil laugh) |

Ok I'll tell you what I know since I'm the one putting them in my hair:rolleyes: First just like any hairstyle they can look good, or they can look bad. There are a bunch of different ways to get them, but the most recommended I've found is backcombing. Essentially you tease your hair into a stringy knot. This way you control the size and location of each dread. Then add wax and after a few months your hair will hold onto the "knotting" mostly by itself. The least recommended is neglect. Where you do nothing. at all. to your hair. So in essence you'll probably end up with just a large mat in your hair instead of nice clean dreads. You are supposed to wash your dreads at least once a week but generally every 2-3 days with a shampoo that doesn't leave any residue in your hair. Thats the basics. ohh and i Just read this today. You should be able to take them out without cutting your hair off with a lot of time patiance and VO5. I like to think of it as an "orgainized chaos" type of hairstyle.:) hope that helps a little |

I think they look cool. Some ppl can pull it off, some cant. My bf said he wants dreads but i really dont think theyll look good on him lol |
So update! I got my kit in the mail today!?! yay. I don't know when i'll get to doing them since my husband has the next couple days off so we'll probably be out and about, but I'll post pictures of before and after for everyone. And you're totally allowed to tell me if i look like fruitcake. I'm quite hard to offend:) |
I had a friend that was living in NY and she actually went to a beauty shop to have them done! I couldn't believe it. Just remember when its time to cut them off, you're going to have VERY short hair. :) |

Oh I can't wait to see the pictures! I think they look so cute on the right personality and really anyone who wants them probably has the personality to carry them off. I didn't know about the washing- that's the only thing I never liked about them- I thought you couldn't really wash them much. Now I'll think they're even cuter knowing that they're clean.:D |
4 Attachment(s) So..I did it!:) Took me three days of backcombing:confuse2: since I did it by myself. I love them! we'll see how they mature in the next little bit but day one is good to go. and here are your pictures. 2 before. 2 after. I'll try to con my husband into taking a better picture of them later. tis tricky on my own. haha. excuse my happy little chipmunk cheeks ;) |
Cuuute!!!:) Your hair is so shiny- even in dreads. I'm jealous!:D |
Looks good! A friend of mine started hers several months ago and absolutely loves them. Oh, she uses lavender essential oil on her scalp - she says it helps to keep it from itching:) |
I LOVE dreadlocks!! Always have. Can't wait to see how yours progress! :D The first time I saw them was as a kid - it was a blond women (like a cool, dirty blond color) at the mall, and she had them down to her waist. SO COOL! |
I love dreads too! All of my friends back in Alaska had them! Yours look great, I can't wait to see how they grow :) |

Ok... I gots questions again. :p when they grow, isn't it straight by the scalp then? What do you do then, redo each one as they grow? or backcomb the roots as they grow? It looks good! I can't wait to see your dreads progress also. :D |

Good job! Gotta say though.... I didn't like dreads much UNTIL Jason Castro was on American Idol. I started out keeping an eye on him since he was an A&M student (and I work on campus) but then fell in love with his looks AND most of all, his voice. I just think he's such a cutie - a little "pretty" even - that the dreads help balance it all out for him. I especially love it when he pulls the sides back. You have a long way to go before yours are as long as his but you're on the right track. Good luck! |

mine are just baby dreads...they like to unravel still. thank you! |
Just googled jason castro. He's a good looking boy! but those dreads have taken a VERY long time! wow. i'm impressed! |
