I've gotten all my music for Yorkie vids legally off iTunes. I can listen to it to my heart's content, but I can no longer use it as background music on my vids. I'm just glad that they're not trying to prosecute anyone and that youtube is giving us an alternative to taking them down completely. It's definitely not youtube's doing. It's the music industry's.

And hviola, I'm not sure about parodies that use names of copyrighted characters. It may be technically illegal, but I don't think they have an easy way to search for that yet.

Mike I was having a little look around to find out what I could about this because I'm concerned some of mine may get taken down too because I have music that has copyrights on it.

I found this article and the ways it reads to me there does seem to be a way round it... but I guess they can't do it with all videos.

I just took a look at that article and then I went to the Royalty Free Music website...am I reading right, one song will costs you $9.95?:eek: That's a little outrageous, especially if it's already a song that I own on a cd!

I didn't go to any of the links, I was refering to the part about youtube placing ads on the page your video is on and then the owners of the material receive the revenue generated.

But yeah, that's stupidly high.

Interesting, thanks. The last notice I got just said that they removed the video. No warning, no ads, it was gone from my list but available elsewhere where I could swap the music. Here's that notice:

Earlier, I got a different notice that seems to be what your link discusses:

Your video "Rusty dogged me" is still available because UMG does not object to this content appearing on YouTube at this time. As long as UMG has a claim on your video, they will receive public statistics about your video, such as number of views. Viewers may also see advertising on your video's page.

I panicked and subbed out the music, but maybe next time I'll let it go and see what happens.

Yeah I think you should give it a try and see what it does next time. If you're not happy with the result then you can remove the video. I guess some companies are going to more willing to share than others but it would be nice if they could all do the ad thing then it's a win-win situation... fat cats don't play that way though sadly.

Oh that's interesting, UMG probably didn't mind you using it, and they are a big company, if not the biggest.

I dunno. The very first notes I got were the same as the UMG claim. But after a few weeks, I got another one saying the publisher decided to remove them.

I'm wondering if they're just allowing the ones that get hundreds of thousands of hits. That would interest advertisers.

They don't make it easy that took 15 minutes to match the names with the artists. That's just the soul list, and I recognized most of those songs, but some of the genres only have one or two artists, and many I have never heard before. I think the Blues and a genre called "R" had some good titles, Ray Charles song "Mess Around" is there, it seems like you used that once before didn't you? Anyway, it's a good song.

The latest from youtube. A while back, they told me I had to swap out the song King of the Mountain for one of the youtube choices. I chose "Mess Around" by Ray Charles. Today, I got the below note, which says that I have to sub out the Ray Charles song. Ugh.

Well that sucks, it seems like they could charge users a small fee for the use of the song, one dollar for example, seems reasonable.

I have a feeling your name has been spotted, and there are some people who work privately finding U-tubes to turn in, I guess they get some type of reward from the music firms. Do you have any subscribers to your videos that you don't know? I think there is someone called Vietnam vet who turns lots of people in.

Seems odd that one of there best songs was deleted, too many people liked it?

I'll bet youtube officials are miserable about this too. It's hard to believe they have the time to contact me out of the millions of users they have.

I just wish there was a better alternative. I don't like any of their music for video purposes.
