Make up tricks and tips?

Since we are talking about make up or no make up on the other thread, I thought we could maybe share some make up tricks or tips?

Okay, let's me start first.

Use Vaseline as "lip primer", then apply lipstick, then use Vaseline again to finish up. It will give your lips moisture and a "lip gloss" effect.

Eye Make up removal: You could also use Vaseline as cleansing oil. Apply Vaseline on your eyelids, then use cotton pad to remove it. It will help speed up the eye make up removal process.

Vaseline is much cheaper also!! Help us save some bucks in this tough economy!

Okay, ladies (or gentlemen), what are your make up tricks and tips?

Blending is key..

Blending your eyeshadow is key to your eye makeup looking good. A good blending brush and you are set. :)

I hardly ever wear lipstick or gloss. I don't like to because it makes the skin on my lips peel. Does anyone else have this problem? I would love a tip or trick to fix this, any ideas?

LDandPasquale 11-16-2008 03:56 PM

If you put foundation on your lips BEFORE applying your lipstick..it will make it last longer throughout the day.

romeos mommy 11-16-2008 03:56 PM

i use baby wipes to remove make- up.

i use white shadow in my eye corner to make them look bigger.

Photo Finish from Smashbox is my make up primer secret. It makes your skin look perfect.

LDandPasquale 11-16-2008 03:57 PM

Has anyone used BARE ESSENTIALS? And if so....how do you like it?

speleogirl37 11-16-2008 04:02 PM

I use it. I love it, threw all my other makeup away! Have you joined the bare escentuals social group on here?

 Yep, very true!

IMHO I think gel eyeliners in a pot are the best. Once you get the hang of using an eye liner brush, it's soooo easy and fast and the liner stays put. I've used pencil, liquid, pen, and liquid that lets you use your eye shadow as liner. Pencil smeared and wore off, liquid was hard to apply and ran if your eye barely watered. Now I use Stila Smudge Pots or Loreal HIP eye liners in a pot. I got my eye liner brush at Sephora.

Actually, you could save lots of money on eyeliner. Red Stick by Maybelline is a staple for me and has been for the past 6 - 7 years & has been my mom's staple for a million years. Take a lighter and melt it a tad, run the lighter on the tip briefly, let it dry then apply. My liner used to last all day at school and the rest of the evening until I took it off before bed. I've been asked by 50 million people what type of liner I use & I'm always so happy to be able to share such a cheap idea with them.

I usually just blend my shadow with my finger, I get the result I'm looking for better than I do when I use a brush.

Always apply your mascara (on your eyelid eyelashes) to the top of the lashes first then underneath. Wiggle it a bit then sweep up. Only apply a bit to the bottom lashes (on the bottom of your eye).

A cheap alternative to Bare Essentuals is Everyday Minerals. You can buy a sample kit for free & only pay shipping. I got 1 concealer, 1 foundation & 3 blushes for $3.95 shipped. I prefer liquid make-up though as the "mineral powder" just seemed to set into the little lines under my eyes.

I'm a make-up freak, it's the main reason why I started cosmetology school.

i LOVE MAC makeup.

imo the powerpoint eyeliner is the best ever.. its waterproof and lasts! i like fluid line too but you have to apply it with a angled brush but its a really good eyeliner that lasts as well if you dont like pencil. they both are really really black :)

foundation primer is good too because it evens out the texture of your face so foundation goes on smoothly and evenly. smashbox makes a good one.

eyeshadows! primer is also a key to making it last all day & also if you dont want creases. i have a variety of blending brushes and it is key especially if you want to use more than one color.

PM if you have questions! or want more tips
i should post a tutorial on here one day :)

I always use Blistex (SPF 45) under my lipstick, even if I don't wear lipstick, it keeps my lips moisturized and keeps them from peeling, my lips are naturally dry.

emilyann 11-16-2008 10:26 PM

I always scrub my lips with a wash cloth and it helps when I use lip gloss so my lips aren't all peely.

I don't use primer and my shadow lasts all day & night. I also use more than one color and rarely use a blending brush.

I 100% believe in being able to make your make-up look awesome and sometimes even better without spending tons of money on "higher end" stuff.

I used to love waterproof mascara but I hate it now, I don't know why.

labrown 11-16-2008 10:50 PM

I don't like it when women put eyeliner all around their eyes. I only use it on the bottom when I am using color. It makes your eyes look smaller and it is so unnatural. I love liquid eyeliner, it just takes practice. Wet & Wild sells really cheap and vibrant eyeliners that I love.

Anyone know where I can find colored mascara? I have blue and black, but I used to have pink, purple, and green, and when they dried up, I couldn't find them anywhere!

You could most likely find colored mascaras at Hot Topic, they have all sorts of funky colored make-up. :p

I am a Bare Escentuals addict. I like it for 2 reasons, it works and you can use any of it for other purposes. For example, you can use eye shadow for lipstick, blush for lipstick or blush for eye shadow and vice versa.

I am not a big lipstick person so the color that comes from the blush is great and it is all coordinated. And on top of everything else, the makeup doesn't got bad after awhile.

I've not used it but there is a spray that is vitamins that you can use prior to applying. It is supposed to give you a good foundation to work with. Love the stuff!

mizzwanned 11-17-2008 03:48 AM

Use a white eyeliner or illuminator and put in the inner corners of your eyes to make them pop. Also on your bottom lash line if you want a more noticed look.

There are lip scrubs you can use to exfoliate your lips. I'm sure in Sephora they have one, they have everything.

Jchirino 11-17-2008 10:58 AM

I am a MAC addict. I use MAC everything. I have Bare Essentuals and I have been using that lately. Just doing the Natural look.

MAC, however, has a product called paint pot. These are awesome shadow primers. They come in a variety of colors and hold your shadow in place and prevent it from creasing. I use it everytime I apply eyeshadow.

Also, a makeup artist told me this once and I couldn't agree more. Your eyebrows are the curtains to your face. A brow brush and brow powder will define them and make your face look great. :)

abaddon248 11-17-2008 11:17 AM

Primer, Primer , Primer!!! for everything lol. eyes, face and lips. I have the smashbox photofinish which is great.

Mineral Makeup for my face is my tip! I love it for everyday use and even going out.

I use MAC everything too. The paints work really well, no more creases in the eye shadow.

Does anyone use the Studio Fix powder? I finally found something that can help to keep my oily skin at bay, but I'm 99% sure it causes me to break out. The good news is the Studio Fix covers up the breakout well, but it seems stupid to keep using it if it is causing the breakout to begin with...a little cyclical, right?

Argh! All the crap people keep feeding me about oily skin being a good thing, because you don't get wrinkles as easily better be true!

I have been using studio fix for over 10 years now. I dont break out. But my esthetician said its really bad for your skin. I tried using other products but went back to using the studio fix because it's awesome and nothing I tried worked as good. I only apply it once in the morning. I dont use foundation or concealer only the powder. It lasts all day!

Jchirino 11-17-2008 12:32 PM

I alternate between stuido fix, mineral foundation, face and body foundation, select tint, and mineral powder. WHy I Have so many, don't ask. lol If I want more of a glow, I use a foundation. The face and body one leaves a nice glow but I feel my face looks greasy after an hr. So, Sometimes I use foundation, sometimes stuido fix. :)

I always, always, always, use concealer under my eyes. Even on one of my "Natural" days. I apply concealer to my under eyes, then bare minerals all over my face and some mascara and i'm set to go. If I remember, I line the bottom of my eyes with white liner to give the appearence of larger eyes.

I also love MAC's Fluid Line. I find it so much easier to maneuver than a pencil. You get the thickness, and or thiness that you want.

Hmm.. Trying to think of some other things..

Oh. When you line your lips, on the edges of the bottom lip, you want to fill them in a little bit with the liner. Atleast that's what I do when I am going for a nude lip.

I went over blending already.. Blending applies to not only the eyes but face too. When you apply blush or bronzer you want to make sure you blend it in with your brush. You don't want to over due the blush either. :) Oh and don't apply blush too close to your eyes..

I think that's about it. lol

PM me if you have any questions. :) I can talk about makeup FOR DAYS..

I found a site that has different mac shadow combinations that look good. For example: It'll suggest what colors compliment eachother.

Any thought on the new i.d Hydrating Mineral Veil? I just bought it yestersday and thought it was not bad. Sometimes, I think baree scentuals is so natural, I feel I don't have anything on or have enough on?! Does anyone else have this feeling??

Hydrating Mineral Veil Kit

Jchirino 11-17-2008 03:19 PM

What is the hydrating mineral veil?

I've felt that way before. Then I keep adding and adding and once I get out in the light, I look like I tripped and fell into a tub of makeup. LOL

I have been using Mineral Veil and nude eyes a lot more lately. I used to not leave my house without my eyeshadow, liner, mascara, etc. done. Now, I'm going for the Bare look.

Jchirino 11-17-2008 03:56 PM

Ha. Just realized you posted a link. LOL Sounds interesting. I'll have to give it a shot. :)

yEs it makes me break out too. I used to have it and it was too heavy, oily for my skin. I use everything else from MAC, the blushes, eyesshadows, etc but their foundations and concealer. I use a diff. brand of foundations that are water based or mineral powder, or mix them since i am prone to breaking out.

xtine 11-18-2008 02:33 AM

aww i miss talking about makeup.

i used to be a makeup junkie. had all the books, the makeup from all the major companies.

i still do make up artistry on the side though for my gal pals here and there.

i love eyeliner. im the girl who wears eyeliner all around my eyes with the smokey look, but the difference is - i know how to wear it lol

and when you curl your eyelashes and use white to brighten up your eyes they do not make your eyes smaller. it's all about application.

You can have the best makeup in the world.. but if you don't know how to apply it or use makeup.. you won't get the benefit of using it (for those that like wearing makeup).

I have a few tutorials on youtube on how to apply foundation all the way to blending and how to create a smokey look simplified.

good luck ladies and have fun talking makeup! :p

Thanks ladies. Sounds like it probably IS the Studio Fix, and my search for the perfect foundation continues! I just need something that does a good job of keeping the shine down but doesn't cause me to break out.
