Thanksgiving dinner - What will you make? We usually have a large stuffed Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, rolls, sweet potatoes, fruit salad, pies and cakes, just the traditional stuff. I don't LOVE roasted turkey, but I love the stuffing out of it. Do you stick with traditional thanksgiving dinners, or go unconventional? |
My family does the traditional stuffed turkey but whats different is we have meat stuffing. Its a french thing. Its stuffing made from hamburger and ground pork with potatoes and bell seasoning(or cinnamon) and cloves in it. Its easy to make and delicious. We stuff the turkey with that and make pies with it, also just eat it on the side as stuffing. We also have mashed potatoes, butternet squash, green beans or peas, gravy and the best part is the condiment tray with green & black olives, pickles and cranberry sauce haha. Ohhh but the best part... chocolate cream pie, pecan pie, pumpkin cream pie mmmmm |

In years past we have always ordered out turkey and a couple of sides and it made it pretty easy for me but this year I am making it all. I am making: turkey,mashed potatoes and gravy,sweet potatoe casserole,corn casserole,green bean casserole,mac & cheese, baked beans maybe, pea salad, pineapple casserole,rolls, pumpkin pie,Hawiaan fruitcake,raisin zuchini spice cake. And after all that I am taking a nap LOL! I think I will be making some of it definitely the desserts the day before . I am looking forward to it this yr because My Son who was in College has moved back and will be here. My Husbands Mom will be here and his brother and his family also |
I wanted a fried turkey so much better than roasted... but i will b e makin a roasted turkey this year lol I think grandma will be doing sides..but i love the sweet potato casserole from betty crocker I might buy it and make it too. |
We've done the traditional thanksgiving every year. We'd have turkey, ham (because my FIL and I don't like turkey), green bean casserole, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, yams, and etc. This year we're having a mexican dinner. My MIL is making taco's. My BIL is making enchiladas and I'm making refried beans, mexican rice. |

Bake the Turkey, make the dressing, and maybe one or two more things. After alll the chopping for the dressing I could stop there if I didn't need the juice from the tukey...lol Angie |

We decided on Ham this year. We just seem to like it better, plus i doesn't have a bunch of bones to pick clean later.:yay_jump: Plus the usual: green bean casserole, potatoes, Sweet 'tatoes, rolls, etc. |
I always hear about the stuffing inside the turkey.. we never have anything in it.. what is the stuffing usually made out of? It sounds really good! (btw this thread is making me really hungry and cant wait until thanksgiving!!) |

Well, this year all I have to make is desserts. Usually I make the traditional turkey or ham, stuffing (lots!) potatos, brussel sprouts, carrots, cranberry sauce, rolls and salad. I have also made rib roast using Paula Deen's instructions for roasting--OMG, OMG! absolutely delicious! If you like rare to medium rare meat, you have to use her recipe. I suppose if you like your meats cooked a little more you can leave the oven on a little longer, but OMG! the roast came out fantastic. I've used her method several times and on different sizes of roasts and it has come out the same each time-delicious! |

Its 3lbs ground pork 1lb ground beef cook up together in a large pan so that meat is crumbled finely. Peel, cut and boil potatoes (no idea how many thats the problem) Mash them with nothing in them, just the potatoes. (I like to leave some small lumps in them) Mix the meat with the potatoes a little at a time until you have the right consistency. It should be where the meat all clumps together and you can scoop it up easily without it falling apart, but too much potatoes and thats all you really taste. My family uses Bells seasoning and ground cloves for seasoning. Just add, mix and taste until it tastes right to you. There are no real measurements. This should be enough to stuff a LARGE turkey and make 2 pork pies (I buy pillsbury pie crust and put a bottom crust in a pie pan and fill it with the stuffing, then add a top crust, slice the top of the crust with steam vents and bake for like 30 - 45 mins. Yummy meal. Good Luck to whoever attempts this! :) |

I cooked a conventional Thanksgiving turkey dinner for the past 51 years, and this year will be totally unconventional to say the least. My sons want to BBQ and watch football, so they are grilling tri-tip, hamburgers & hot dogs and I'll make a white chili and some pies. Doesn't really matter what's for dinner as long as you get to share with family & friends. ;) |

We go over to my mom's house for thanksgiving. It's turkey, walnut stuffing and Amish stuffing, corn, green beans, mash potatoes, squash and homemade pumpkin pie and apple pie. We also have a few different wines to try;) This year I am bringing a meatless dish for me in place of the turkey because I have became vegetarian this past May:) The day after thanksgiving we go over to my inlaws because Downtown Sandusky has the Tree lighting ceremony that day! We alway's go down for that. They do not have a turkey for thanksgiving diner, this year she is making roast beef. Again I am bringing my own dish in place of the beef. She is roasting vegies in a vegie broth for me though. At first my mother in law told me that I was going to ruin thanksgiving and that I was picky enough as it was let alone to become a vegetarian, but she has simmered down after I have brought my own dished to share when they host a diner for us. I also bring a nice bottle or two of wine for that, and after the ceremony we head back for hot cocoa and hot apple cider and I share the wine with the adults! |
I've been working on the menu for this year. The entire family is coming to my house: seafood cheesecake appetizer with crackers sausage wraps cheese straws turkey with dressing and giblet gravy squash broccoli salad butter beans broccoli casserole vegetable casserole pear salad homemade sourdough bread pecan pie homemade pound cake with strawberries and cream pumpkin rolls I've already finished most of the baking and have my freezer full! |
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, wow, so many thing to be thankful for!,and ever since we got married (23 years) I always cook, all the family comes over, roasted turkey some years, marinated cuban style, other years traditional, I've tried soaking the turkey into salt and spices water, sorry forgot the name :confused:(brie?), this year my husband wants it fried, but we need to buy the fryer.My mom does the sweet potatoes with marshmallow and lots of butter, my kids do apple pie and key lime pie (to die for!)green been casserole, corn, mashed potatoes,stuffing, if we go cuban style, then we go with white rice and black beans, but since it's so close to Christmas, and its the only time we cook the whole turkey, we much rather go traditional. |

My thanksgiving is in no way traditional, well actually it is but we just add things from our culture. We normally have: Turkey (There is no other way to cook a turkey but to brine it!, last year I used to Emerils Recipe: Brined, Herb Roasted Turkey Recipe : Emeril Lagasse : Food Network and I use Alton Brown's cooking method :Good Eats Roast Turkey Recipe : Alton Brown : Food Network - I also love making this stuffing! It is amazing! - Awesome Sausage, Apple and Cranberry Stuffing - Allrecipes - Mashed Potatoes - Sweet potato Roasted Sweet Potatoes & Onions - Allrecipes - Caesar Salad - Green Bean Casserole This is where we spice things up We are Cuban so we make - Pork - Cassava (Yuca) - Cuban Bread with butter and garlic - Moro (Black bean rice) For dessert we always have -Flan -Pumpkin Pie - Sweet potato pie - Arroz con leche I am the one that normally does all of the cooking, I make things such as the desserts a few days in advance and do most of the prepwork the day before! I love thanksgiving! :) |

We make a pork shoulder (about 8-9lbs) we first get: -sour orange about 3 cups - a couple tablespoons of black pepper -10-15 cloves of garlic - some oregano -some cumin We mix it all in the blender. Then we salt the pork, and then pour the marinade over, opening some areas with a knife and pouring it inside. We used to have a syringe so we used to inject the marinade in it but it broke. We basically cover it with the marinade. Then we pat dry the skin on the top and put butter so that it becomes crunchy. Then we cook it at 300 degrees for about 5 hours. Just keep an eye on it and it, when done the meat will literally come off the bone. The top will get bubbly and crunchy which tastes awesome. Hope this helps! If you have any questions feel free to ask. P.S. You may have leftover marinade,put it away because it works well on anything from chicken to steaks! |
The whole family used to go to my mom and dad's for turkey, stuffing, mashed potato, gravy, turnip, butternut squash, salad, rolls, pickles, olives, pumpkin pie, apple pie and pecan pie. They are in Florida and will not be home until Christmas. My sister will do Christmas Eve and I will do Christmas Day (same menu). We are going to a restaurant for Thanksgiving and the menu is fantastic. No cleanup!!:D |
