I actually got a PM from someone that said they would not be back on this forum because of that thread...hopefully she will reconsider. :( |
That is very unfortunate and it is totally uncalled for that someone was hurt like that. I hope she reconsiders. But my point is, politics is a tough game. Though they shouldn't, finger pointing and name calling come with it. I wish that there could be a way that we could respectfully debate politics, because it's something I really love doing. No one should be forced to see a debate they don't want to talk about. I (and many others) want to talk about what's going on in my country, and I'd like to talk about it with people I respect - the folks on YT. The way I see it, if they have a right to NOT talk about it, don't I have a right TO talk about it? Both sides can be accomodated, IMO. :) |

I see your point though Megan, I really do. I guess there is no way to please everyone. At which point in time it becomes an issue here or anywhere else, I guess that it when members have to determine if they still wish to be members or if it is time to take a break from the forum for a while--and I think we all have a good general idea of when that would be the best. ;) |

You are right that name calling is inappropriate and VERY immature. Other than that, a civilized discussion about our nation and all the events surrounding it should be allowed and 'voilaters' who truely ARE offensive (name calling, swearing, etc...) should be warned by admin. RESPECT. That is the only rule needed when dealing with a volatile situation. RESPECT yourself and RESPECT others, its simple 3rd grade material, due onto others as you would want done onto you. |

In any case, you said the key words..."It WAS a thread." ;) Clearly one that came with alot of strong emotion, so only "right" thing to do is treat it as any other and get rid of it. Quote:

The person being "offended" doesn't need to keep torturing themselves by coming back on the thread that is causing them to feel that way? Its like TV being offensive, turn the darn channel! But give people a chance to make the choice. I really wanted to have a healthy discussion like what was happening last night, but there is someone who will be offended or offensive, so why not just ignore the thread? |
naw.. Im not worked up about it. I just don't like seeing how worked up other people can get over something just not worth it. Ya know? I could care less... I don't post to threads that bother me. I don't claim to be offended and NEED to say Im offended. If something did offend me I don't say anything, not worth my time. I get off the computer and do something. This place should be fun and should be a place to gain knowledge on all different types of aspects. A political thread is fun for some, not for others. So if you don't like it and its not fun for you or you have nothing to say that adds value or educates, then don't, please don't, post on it. Save yourself your temper and others your temper. I don't know... maybe I'm wrong. Honestly I could care less, I just hope someone will read this and think 'yeah I overreacted, or I need to chill out on some things or not post to others things.' Then it would be calm and respectful when politics or other hot button topics come up. I love to read others points of view. I know who I voted for. I respect those who voted the opposite. I love to hear WHY and ask questions. |

If someone was insulting people from California? Or how about insulting your husband because he is military (isn't he)? Would you be willing to just "not come back on the thread?" |

Personally speaking for myself, I can turn the channel so to speak. I have gotten upset on a couple threads here. One of them, I almost got suspended. But I think Admin was being a bit hasty with their judgement. I am not one to cuss or belittle anyone. A debate can get heated, but can be educational at the same time. I think Admin should step in if it gets out of hand, but not for common discussion. |

I have a thick skin about things and it doesn't bother me to hear opinions that may differ from my own. I'm sure there are plenty of forums, blogs, etc... that anyone interested in debating politics can go and do that. I get to debate that enough with family, friends and co-workers! :p I'm a little relieved that I can come to YT and keep it light on that particular topic, but that is just strictly my opinion! |

I do think politics are very important but I think they should be discussed on a political forum rather than a Yorkie forum so that people can stay friends:) |

What someone else said about the hunting thread...I think that brings up a great point. I personally think hunting is awful and I don't like discussions about killing innocent creatures...but some people do. and they have a right to post about it, even though it's a really touchy subject for a lot of people. I don't want to take away their right to post about it, because it's something they ENJOY and that's how it's defended. But talking politics is something I enjoy, but it's against the rules. I just find it to be hypocritical, I guess. Nope, you're right, there is NO way to please everyone totally. But everyone can be a bit pleased, can't we? I don't see any harm in havig just one thread. It's ONE thread, easy to ignore for the people who don't want it there, and it's there for the people who do want it there. I don't want to go on some political forum to debate it because the people on forums like that are just too...rude. I don't know. Too pushy. I consider everyone on YT my friends, and this is something I'd like to discuss with my friends. |

eta I think there were actually 2 threads? One in OT and one in general. I only got to one of then so I'm not completely sure. |
I think there is a fine line between rules and censorship. Things can get a bit on the iffy side if you ask me. I was in on that thread in the OT forum and it started decently if you ask me. There was one person that is a fairly newbie that kept throwing comments that were meant to inflame and I like the rest of the others I know totally ignored that person's post. I know when I jumped off at twelve thirty we were innocently talking about how to get a yorkie in the white house. If things went awry after that then I am sorry to hear that. I think that there should be a spot where we can discuss such things as long as there is no name calling or cussing. In a family you don't censor things just because one of you might not like the others take. You discuss civilized and share you ideas and thoughts. That is what this whole thing should have been about. That is how you learn and grow. I don't feel the thread should have been locked. Maybe remove the offensive posts and let the rest be. I do understand that politics is a no no according to the rules but there are a alot of other things that might be deemed offensive such as the hunting thing. I think that if your offended by something then you can easily walk away from it without throwing gasoline on that fire. Megan I fully and totally agree with your position on the issue. Sometimes I think that the moderators should rethink some of the things they censor. If you want to censor things then there should be an across the board level of censorship to things that are offensive. If YT is to only be about yorkies then that should be across the board and encompass all things that might be offensive. I have seen things closed on here that made me scratch my head because I didn't see the need for it but what can you do. I guess the only thing is to walk away and spend your time doing things other than sharing on YT. |
