The scent doesn't really linger in the air once the vauum is off (I wish it did). I'm using tea tree right now because I like it but I know a lot of people think it smells too medicinal. I've used rosemary and lavender together and also grapefruit and bergamot. I'd just use whatever smells good to you. I use around 6 drops.

Another thing I thought of is I used to have a vacuum that had a flat filter and I replaced it with a folded dryer sheet. That worked well too but you have to have the right kind of filter to do it.

I'll look for one that says it's a neutraliser but I'm not sure I've seen one. Yesterday I cleaned the carpets using the shampoo that is a neutraliser and used the hoover today all clean and fresh and got the exact same smell. :confused: Would the powder work better than an actual deep clean carpet cleaner?

Nope, NEVER had this problem which the last hoover and that was OLD... like 3-4 years old. :confused: The belt was what burnt out on that one and this smell definately is more doggy than burning rubber.

I don't have the doggie odor coming from the vacuum cleaner, but I do use one of three things that make the house smell nice when I vacuum. One is the little packets of Aromatherapy scented sachet's, the second is the packet of scented tiny balls made especially for the vacuum, and the third is a scented dryer sheet. (I use two or three at a time).
You should maybe mist your dogs with a leave in conditioner before brushing each day. ;)

Ohhh, not as much as I thought I'd have to use. Good thing I asked! :rolleyes: I like the smell of tea tree too but oddly it makes Gypsy sneeze. :( I'll see if I can find an apple scent or cherry blossum, hmmm, maybe a magnolia. :) Oh the choices just to have a nice smell follow me round the room while I hoover, lol. :rolleyes:

That's a good idea about the fliter, both mine are round and thick though otherwise I would of tried that.

Hmmm, I wonder if you can get the balls over here? I've not seen them. I know you can get something similar to the Aromatherapy sachets here that are designed especially for the hoover but they only do one scent and it's awful. :(

I do use a leave in conditioner on the girls, Kayla's coat is long and thick and I can't brush her through without it and Gypsy's coat is cottony and goes frizzy looking unless she has conditioner on it. I keep sniffing the girls and they don't even smell like dog. :confused:

I guess I confused where the smell is coming from, do you suspect it's from the carpets, or is it coming from the vacuum? Could the vacuum have been a used one, without you knowing it? Very puzzling, don't do anything that might void your warranty with the vacuum, such as using boiling water, I think I would be tempted to return it.

I'm more than 100% sure that the carpets don't smell. There is no smell at all in the house, I've asked several people that have been round and they would all tell me if my house smelt like dog. The girls don't smell like dog, they always smell like they just went to the groomers. The hoover itself stinks, when it's running the air coming out of it is awful. :( It's more dog smell but I guess it has a hint of dirty socks/sweaty feet... either way, it's icky. I don't think it's a used one, it was from a highend chain store and was all sealed and cost alot so if it was used I'd be pretty annoyed. I think I will give the vinegar a go and if tomorrow I have the same thing then I'm going to see about returning it. If it still fills the house with the dog smell after cleaning it all again and knowing 100% my carpets are clean, (one room the girls haven't even been in there since it was cleaned), then I will know it's not from anything in my home.

I really don't think it's from anything in the home either. I think the problem is the vacumm, and maybe their filters.

i vacuumed my rugs with my electrolux and i smelled something too. i didnt know where the heck it was coming from.. i knew though it had to be the vacuum, when i shut it off, no more smell.. hmmmm... the bag wasnt even full.

My vacuum was smelling some and not working as well. Me and my hubby took off the rollers and disconnected the hoses and washed them. It looked like there was some Triss poo stuck in the roller brushes and the hoses smelled like it too. We cleaned it and sanatized it with Lysol and now its better. I also bought a new filter. (I have a brown area rug, so I mustve not seen the accident and went over it.)

Also, whenever I have to clean up a smelly mess, like a hairball from my cat or my son got something stuck under the fridge, I use baking soda. I make a paste with it using a bit of water and rubbing alcohol. I use a little brush and clean up the spot.

(Off topic, but a funny little story about british accents. I downloaded a little free counting game for my brother when he was young. I let him play it with the headphones while I did other stuff in the house. I didnt realize it was a british game and whenever my brother counted he used the accent. It took a while to get him to stop, but it was sooo cute. And he kept calling baby strollers a fram? Is this right? I had never heard the word.)

He probably means pram - that what we say here:D It does get confusing though....a while a go in a thread I didnt know what a baby's pacifier was - then realised it was a dummy! Sorry - thread hijack! Hope your hoover smells lovely soon xxx:)

One thing that can make your vacuum smelly is moisture. If there is a lot of humidity in the air where it's stored, it can grow mold in there:( Also, if you vacuum over dampness of any sort, it can happen.

I hope it's non smelly soon:laugh:!

my hoover smells really bad too! my husband wants to buy a new one so we don't have to smell it anymore. I kind of lingers for a bit but then goes away after you vacuum. I might try the cotton idea. I thought we were the only ones with this issue!!!!

You can use any of the potpourri shavings sold in bags. Just throw a handful in the bag or canaster. Those little scented balls are very tiny, and are hanging on racks in small packets. You open the pouch and pour the tiny bead size balls in the vacuum. I just find the dryer sheets are less expensive and they do work quite nice.
