How do you cook a sweet potato? For Layla that is... so no butter or whatever else one might put on it :p Thanks! |
Hi, Marci! When I make them for us, I just put them in the toaster oven wrapped in foil for approximately one hour (depending on size). I like to cook them slow. Then I just peel it and mash it up for Sam... then eat mine:) |

I cut it in half and put it in a bowl w/ a little water and lid, then put in the microwave for like 7-10 mins. Take out, peel it and mash it. |
ok another question- no matter what way i cook it- do i always peel it after it is done cooking? |
I always peel it... |

You will be able to stick a fork through it but with boiling I'm sure most of the nutrients are cooked out... You could probably bake it also. |

Stab it with a fork and nuke it for 7-10 minutes, or, boil it. I might also roast it in the oven if I have something else in there. |
I use my toaster oven for everything. It doesnt heat up the house and just handy dandy to use. I love it! |
You can boil them or bake them. For the dog I would probably cut into chunks and boil. |

If I am roasting something I will put in oven otherwise I nuke them. |
Ok sweetie.........here ya go...................wash, dry pierce with fork, coat with butter, wrap in a wet paper towel and microwave for about 5 minutes (then unwrap & poke with fork to see if it's done) Peel skin off and them just mash with fork. My girls love them mashed with goat cheese. :D |

If I just want to do one at a time I also wrap in tissue and pop in microwave. But if I want to do a large batch and freeze some for another time, I peel, chop and wash then put them in my electric steamer. Depending on amount can take 10-20 minutes and most if not all the nutrients are retained plus you can use some of the water in the bottom of the steamer when mashing to make it even softer:D |
My husband just brought home some, am going to cook for Tricksie. I mostly micro or toaster oven too. |
you guys are making me hungry. I do mine a couple ways: -wash/scrub, rub with olive oil, poke a few holes in them, and bake directly on the oven rack at 350 F (threw that in there for you Canadians ;) ) for about an hour. Test with fork for doneness. I turn them every 15-20 min too. -I also peel them, then cut into strips the long way like steak fries, and put them on a baking sheet lined with foil. I toss them with olive oil & salt and maybe some seasoning, and bake probably 30-40 min at 350. -Got this one from a friend's mom from New Mexico (would NEVER think to do this but it's SO good): Peel sweet potatoes, cut into about 1" cubes. Put into baking pan, coat liberally with olive oil. Add 1-3 cloves of chopped garlic, 1/4 cup pine nuts, and 1/2 teaspoon (maybe? I never measure...) dried rosemary. Mix together, and bake covered for 35 min, stirring occasionally. When time is up, take out of oven and stir once more, and top with another 2 tablespoons pine nuts. Put back into oven uncovered and let roast another 10-15 minutes so the pine nuts get toasty. SO good-it's a savory dish for sweet potatoes, but a really nice change from candied yams and that sweet potato mush with marshmallows on the top! I made it for Thanksgiving last year and it was a hit-I'll be making them again this year! |
This might beat out the okra thread. |
