How much do you tip your hair stylist? My old stylist charged $55 for a haircut and $135 for a cut and partial foil. I always tipped him $10 no matter which service I got. How much do you tip your hairstylist? Do you do it on a percentage or a specific dollar amount? I always wondered if I really needed to tip my stylist. When I calculate out the hourly rate, he makes more than I do, nearly twice as much! And I am a professional with a Masters Degree! My clients sure as heck don't tip me. |
I ALWAYS tip my stylist! I couldn't live without her! And would'nt want to try! I always come away with something great. She always listens to what I want and also offers suggestions if I ask! I always give at least 15%, but usually 20%. I always get a haircut, style and color (either full or touchup) I consider it a treat to myself! Now, on the other hand, if I went to a stylist and wasn't thrilled with the outcome or even the attitude, I wouldn't tip as much. |
If the stylist owns the shop...it's not really necessary to tip. They get the entire fee. Otherwise I tip 20% of the total amount charged. |
My stylist owns her shop - she charges $20.00 for a simple cut/trim and I always tip her $5. |
My stylist own the shop and I don't tip. |
If I like it, I'll tip anywhere from $5 - $10. On the other hand, if they completely butcher me and do exactly opposite of what I clearly stated then I tip nothing. |
i usually tip 20% |
I also tip 20%. |

One daughter does my hair and the other does my nails. They both rent space in the same salon....I don't tip them (or, have to pay for services...because i'm the MOM) but they do get tipped very well. Just thought I would throw this in...could never understand this. |

My hairdresser is the owner and I do tip him. Because I'm mathmatically challenged I start from 20% and then round up. |
I also tip 20% - owner or not:) |

Threading I give her $5 Nails I give $5 also Facial-$20 I always wonder if tips are over rated? I mean it seems like were supposed to do it. Oh I forgot about valet parking, thats another $5 also ;) |
My stylist owns the shop. She charges $20 for a cut and I tip $5. |
For a haircut I give $5 but if she frost my hair she gets $20. |
At my old salon, there are levels of stylists and the owner fees for a cut was 2.5 times the first-level stylist. In that case I can understand why people might tip differentially, but if the cuts are all the same price regardless of who does it, I tip 20%. |
I tip 20% for any service I get be it hair, nails, massage, etc. no matter who owns the shop. :D Plus if she has one of her helpers wash my hair that person gets $3 regardless. |

OK, so 20% seems to be the going rate for a tip. Do you tip this much whether the haircut/service is $20 or $200? I just have a hard time justifying a 20% tip for a haircut that costs $80 - $100, which seems over priced to me. |
I used to own a restaurant/bar and I would bartend wait tables and cook in the kitchen amongst other things. What is the difference with the service you get from an employee or owner? Hopefully you get at minimum the same service, if not better! I put myself thru college by bartending and waitressing and then I was in commission sales for most of my working years. So working and earning my money was always first and foremost. The meaning of TIPS is "to insure prompt service". Did you get that service from the individual? If so, then what is the issue with giving this person a tip? It used to really bother when people would say that they didn't need to tip because I was the owner. |

I am an esthetician and at one time planned on opening my own skin care studio. If I had, I would have had built into my prices what I wanted to make for each service and not accepted tips. I think it would be fantastic if all owners did this but they don't meaning they are counting on tips and that is why I tip my stylist even though he is the owner. If the owner has set their prices to not rely on tipping they will let you know that when you try to tip them. eta- I think this post could be in the running for worst run on sentence on YT.:p |

Just a case in point..my DD is a waitress. She is taxed 10% of the food / drinks served. NO MATTER WHAT. She is also only getting $2.35 an hour. She served 9 older ladies for a lunch and was left .75 cents by 2 of them...she is in the hole for the day $9 for the taxes on that table. Go figure.... |
Here's a link to a CNN/Money guide on tipping: CNN/Money: How much to tip |
I tip about 20% every time... regardless that she is a friend! |
$20 + .... she works in a salon where their cuts/perms/etc. are mega cheap. She is a single Mom with teenagers ... I would give her more but would never want to insult her. She is great!! :) |
