Kathryn, this is the quote that confused me. I'm glad that your daughter wont feel pressure to eats things that disturb her like I would imagine dog would.
I teach my daughter to be respectful of other cultures as well however if a belief system goes against my own value system (or your own, or anyone's own), we should not be afraid to express it. There are many cultural traditions that I do not respect or value and I wont pretend I do. I have known people from the very deep south where it is the culture to hate anyone not white and homophobia is perfectly acceptable. Female genital mutilation is a cultural norm in parts of Africa- Guess what? I don't have to be afraid to say that goes against my own beliefs. I respect diversity, I LOVE diversity but that does not preclude me having my own value system. I wont even start on the horrible human right violations in China since that is the doing of the Chinese government and not the people as a whole.
The debate of respecting other cultures aside, that isn't what this thread is about- this thread is about eating dog on a dog lover's forum. I think it's safe to say most of us are going to think it's repulsive. That isn't dispespectful. I love grits and many people think they are disgusting. Grits are part of my southern culture, should I be offended? |
The beauty of quoting people is ones ability to take thinks out of context... you failed to include the line in BOLD....
"She knows that you never insult something offered to you and you always take a small amount and "try" it. And never make a face. If its just not for you, and you honestly can't stomach something, politely say no thank you."
Honestly... I wouldn't eat it.. I just didn't want this to become another one of these bashing threads where posters go on a "How could they, those awful people, don't they know.... bla bla bla...." its racist and hateful when we start bashing a race, country or culture for its way of life, food, or values... they may not value the dog the way we do. And who are we to say its wrong?
I think they are to be commended for ajusting their menues and in many cases changing the names of the menu items so that they are easier to read, for the visiting tourists. Its a very nice guesture!
Me personally... I am on the same page with many of you as far as what I will and won't eat, I just choose not to spread the hate and bash people over things I cannot change nor is it my place to pass judgement. |
