Save the dolphin but %#@$ the tuna....... Ya, I never got it. Man domesticated dog... we werent born with one by our side. They were wild to start. And many still are today. I'm not running out to order up a plate of dog, please don't get me wrong, but who are we to pass judgement on their culture?? If you think its awful, be polite and respectful, and just don't order it... you don't insult people on their soil! We are looked at just as badly if not more so for eating the flesh of the sacred and holy cow! How could we eat such an animal?? My daughter is going to china for two weeks to watch the Olympics! I have had the talk with her about being a gracious guest in anouther country. She knows that you never insult something offered to you and you always take a small amount and "try" it. And never make a face. If its just not for you, and you honestly can't stomach something, politely say no thank you. But she is going with an open mind and is pretty gutsy! lol Bottom line, its easy to talk smack, but just think about the cultural differances and the traditions you may be insulting in the process! You don't have to agree but you can be respectfull. |

I feel like I must be misunderstanding you. Are you saying your daughter would feel obligated by manners to eat dog? I teach my daughter the importance of respecting others and being gracious but I also teach her she has every right to uphold her own beliefs and values. |

My point was that I would appreciate it if we would not bash the culture for their choice of foods. There are many things that differ from country to country. I have raised my daughter to respect people of all races, religons, and cultures. I have also taught her to be a gracious guest. You don't ever be disrespectfull of people when in their home, or country. She is taking along a guide who is from Beijing, born and raised so she will be able to better understand the language and have someone to help her understand the culture. Certian actions are very disrespectful, so she wants to avoid them. I know that through her prep she will be a welcomed guest and be a great example of an American teenager. We don't have the best reputation over there ;) It will be her, the guide (who is a friend of her grand mother) and her grand mother who are going. Its an amazing trip! I hope she trys everything! Its a once in a lifetime trip! She should make the most of it! I would! |
This was a news article. I thought it was interesting that China recognizes how distasteful this is for many visitors that will be coming there for the Olympics and made this concession. I believe that any subject should be able to be discussed. It is not the subject that causes the problem but a lack of restraint on the parts of some. Opinions can be stated without having things 'go off' the deep end if a level of respect is maintained for each other's opinions. It's a point of interest and was posted as such. It doesn't have to be bad. If it is a choice of some to take it to a bad place, that is regrettable. I respect the opinions of others as should we all. If I feel tremendously negative about an opinion, I can state such without being disrespectful of others. Self restraint is a very good trait to have and when on public boards should be exercised. We could be talking about peaches and cream and someone could take that to a bad place if they desired. It is the choice of the individual and not the subject that brings on the problem. __________________________________________________ _____ |
Kathryn, this is the quote that confused me. I'm glad that your daughter wont feel pressure to eats things that disturb her like I would imagine dog would. Quote:
The debate of respecting other cultures aside, that isn't what this thread is about- this thread is about eating dog on a dog lover's forum. I think it's safe to say most of us are going to think it's repulsive. That isn't dispespectful. I love grits and many people think they are disgusting. Grits are part of my southern culture, should I be offended? |
