Puppy Mill Challenge If you only had $25 and you wanted to use it in a way that would make the biggest impact on ending puppy mills, how would you use it? This is pretty open-ended, so please put some thought into it. There is a method to my madness, so I really would appreciate your participation. Thanks!:aimeeyork |
I would probably donate it to a group that is actively working on getting laws passed to restrict puppy mills. |
Which group would you choose? |
bump! :) |
I would donate it to a group that is actually working to close them . Goverments are very to slow to react about having against puppymills laws . |
So, rather than a political action group, a group that researches, inspects and reports them? What about going at it from the direction of public education? |
What about the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) Puppy Mill Education Fund? Anyone know about this? I believe the donations go directly to print ads? Ads and Billboards |

Thanks! Would buying a local print ad with their materials be better? that one flier that has the little boy holding the cute puppy and titled "Looking for a puppy?" would be very effective in our local thrifty newspaper where all of our local puppy mill/backyard breeder ads are. Hmmm...makes me think. |
Maybe it's too expensive (but worth it) if there were billboards and commercials to educate people... |
I think education is the key to helping stop puppymills. I think working with the HSUS or taking out and ad would be a great way to help. I would also try to start a Stop Puppymills Fund since you said origionally what would you do if you had only $25.00, well if you got more funding you can reach more people with more ads. Maybe do your own website as well. Freewebs.com is a free website source where you can get alot of exposure throughout the United States. |

What would I do with a website that HSUS isn't already doing better? Reaching my local market is one thing, but what else? |

Education is key, and many people have learned that buying from a Pet store is a no-no, but still think it's perfectly acceptable to buy from a website. This is even worse. Responsible breeders might have websites, but they don't sell their pets from the website. |

I'd have to find an organization other than HSUS to give my money to. I would never knowingly donate any of my hard earned cash to them. |

Thank you for your information. I appreciate and respect your opinion. On the other hand, I do not support guns or hunting, so that's good information for me to have. |
Do you know of any organizations that work to stop puppy mills that do support guns and hunting? If you do, I would like to know who they are. Do you have any suggestions as how to spend $25 in the way most likely to have an impact on ending puppy mills? |

I don't wish to get in a big fight about this, but I thought it might interest some readers just what types of "hunting" the humane society is against. There something called canned hunting, where animals are in an enclosed area and can't escape, and many other examples of inhumane practices, see this page for more information: The HSUS's Hunting Campaign |
Nancy, you posted before I could! lol I agree with the stand that HSUS takes against hunting. It doesn't seem extreme to me at all. It's just plain wrong to hunt in that manner. We can agree to disagree about hunting in general, but not those forms of hunting. Nope, no way, no how. But...back to the topic at hand. I seriously doubt that you will find ANY group working to end puppy mills that supports hunting. It's just not what any animal rights group I know of supports. |
I have no problems with them being against canned hunts and what not, that's just not hunting. From what I've read on the net and in magazines, they're pretty well against all forms of hunting and have tried to lobby for more public land closures and tighter restrictions. I'm not looking for a big debate, just stating my feelings towards them. |

I'm glad you agree that this is not true hunting all; it might be better to get your information from Humane Society on what types of hunting they are truly against. Certain groups are fanatical, but I have found the Humane Society to be very reasonable in the issues involving animals. I think if you read their page on hunting, you will find you are against the type of hunting they describe as well. |
Hi again O68, (Do you have a first name, this is really impersonal) Hi O68, I'm Judy! :D I'm very glad you are giving us your opinion on these issues. We need everyone to help work towards ending puppy mills, so I really appreciate it. What would you do? Is there an organization you would support that you could recommend? |

I know the HSUS is sort of a hot button on YT but Charity Navigator (a very well respected organization) rates them 4 stars. You can see how they spend their money here- Charity Navigator Rating - The Humane Society of the United States Very impressive IMHO. No organization is ever going to have beliefs that are 100% in line with my beliefs or anyone else since we are all individuals with our own minds. I think it is important to support organizations who help the most in areas that are important to you personally and I think HSUS does a lot to educate on puppy mills. Judy I have bought tee shirts for my daughter and I have a puppy mill bumper sticker on my car from HSUS but that is all I can lay claim to sadly. At one point my daughter and I were talking about ordering their informational brochures on puppy mills and asking if we could leave them at local vets' offices, groomers and places like that but I have to admit we didn't follow through. I still think it's a good idea but I don't know if it's the BEST way to spend $25. I'm hoping someone comes up with a fantastic idea and then I'll borrow it too.:p |

But we're talking in general. :D |
