for those with migranes..please help! my little girl that is 7 has been having migranes since she was 5. the problem i'm having is she loves strawberries but for some reason everytime she eats them it seems to trigger them :( so i feel so bad for her because she loves them. but i have never heard of fruit triggering migranes please help! |
Could be a mild allergy. I suffer migraines and it is awful and I'm 34, can't imagine at 7, poor thing. I've only been suffering for about 7 years and I sit in the dark and take Advil. I would check in with your GP about an allergy it would be a shame if she had to start taking migraine meds at her age. |
she already takes meds :( |
First let me say, I'm sorry for her! I get migraines, and they can be triggered by many things. And are often different things for different people. Are the strawberries the only things that give her migraines? If so thats really not so bad. (I know she is only 7, and thats bad enough, but if she were getting them form a lot of things it would be so much worse.) Probably something in the strawberry that triggeres her migraines, or even something that they spray on them to get the bugs off. Have you ever grown them yourself?? Does Strawberry jam give her headaches too? Look into all of this and let me know. I have had migraines for the last 29 years, and it sucks, Thank god for Imitrex. I have lost so much of my life becasue of headaches. I sometimes get them 2-3 times a week lately. Today was a bad one! PM me if you need more information. |
Sounds like an allergy to me. I get the same thing when I eat tomatoes. Poor thing. I also suffer from migranes. It sux. |
I have serious chronic migraines...sometimes I get them for no reason, but I do know that I have a food allergy to nuts that causes migraines. I have to be very careful to watch what I eat. I have been getting migraines since I was in like 4th grade so I can relate. I take Excedrin Migraine and it is one of the only things that helps. I go through a bottle about every 2-3 weeks. Good luck, sorry to hear your little one suffers from these horrible headaches. |

oh and can you believe that they had me worried for a week because while they were trying to figure out what was wrong with her before they diagnosed her with migranes they told me that she was having signs of a brain tumor  then finally they measured her brain did a catscan, etc...but that was one long week! i was in tears everyday. |
Migraines It sounds like your daughter may have a condition called abdominal migraines that some kids suffer from. My daughter who is five was diagnosed with this last year. She gets these headaches from time to time that cause her to vomit at times. When they come, she has to be in the dark with a cool cloth on her head. I give her motrin which seems to help. The funny thing is that when she vomits the headache seems to go away. I still really can't figure out what triggers them. Also, she does have a history of allergies too. She gets allergy shots twice a week. However, she is not allergic to foods. Only pollens, grasses and molds and cats, horses. I don't know if there is a connection with the headaches or not. There is an organization called "Cyclic Vomiting" that talks more in depth about abdominal migraines and kids with migraines. You can google cyclic vomiting and maybe get some helpful info. Hope that helps... |
Hi Jess, I'm so sorry your daughter has to go through this. It sounds like she's a little trooper though. I've suffered with migraines for about 30 years. Chocolate is one of the things that triggers mine. Also strobe lights and working bent over out in the heat, ie, gardening. |

Ohh Im so sorry for yor daugther. I get migraines when Im under a lot of stress and some lites and is horrible. I feel so bad when a child gets sick, is like they are to young to be going thru so much. Im so glad that a brain tumor was ruled out. I will have her on my prayers. |
Im so srry for your daughter. I to suffered migraines where they seemed to last for days. I was on imitrex as well but it didnt help me. I started using excedrin migrane and believe it or not it helps. I first started getting them after my first pregnancy but they now happen very sparingly (thank god). I hope your daughter gets rid of them, i hate the thought of a child being in that kind of pain. |
There is actually something in fruit that can cause heavy reactions. My husband is allergic and strawberries, kiwis and pineapple are the worst. As soom as they are processed in some way, it doesn't affect him, but if he gets fresh fruit he will blush, feel woozy and get a headache. Try feeding her fresh kiwi and pineapple to see if it does the same, then you know she should not have fresh fruit at all. For my husband melons and bananas are ok. It's some acid in fruit that is bad for him and melons and bananas don't have that much of it. |
thank you all for your support and kind words. i like hearing everyones experiences with migranes it helps to educate myself better. i pray everyday that god will make this go away for my kaylee and hopefully one day he will answer my prayers. but for now i am glad that i have everyone here who is willing to help me, by sharing their personal experiences. thank you all sooo much for your support :) |
The red "dye" that is a natural coloring for Mother Nature can trigger many auto-immune responses. Tomatoes, red apples, red grapes to name a few. I, too have migraines..that is why I was not posting-I was sick in BED! For 4 days. I am a tough ole bird, seriously, but they knock me flat. LIght, sound, repetitive sounds, the mention or smell of foods wil prompt an episode of vomiting. The ache does really let up for a short while after that. MSG(also known as Accent) is another trigger, and is also known as hydrolized vegetable protein. FOOD TENDERIZER, WHEN USED UNFLAVORED, IS NOT MSG!! Caramel colorings in such things as sauces in cans, gravy etc have a similar compound. I started with them at age 11. Traumatic childhood was a factor in the frequency. BUT, there was an emotional component. When I got sick, my dad would come to my Granny's house and bring me a piece of ice, tomoato juice but the creme de la creme was a Hershey bar all of my own. I really spent a long spell when I didn't have them. But, since I have had so many debilitating episodes, I get the more often. If you don't have a heart or blood pressure problem, you can take acetamenophin 500 mgm 2 tabs every 6-8 hours AND take the old fashioned "No Doz" tablets. It was used to keep drivers awake when they are drivers. Take 100-200 mgm with the other stuff. I had a doc in the employee health unit that I ran who had terrible migraines. He could not leave his clinic so he said to consider the words as orders and to give him some of that damned stuff. He took 2 doses in about 3 1/2 hours and went home as usual..Ice on the back of the neck might help. Ice on top of head or forehead might help. Soothiing scents; accupuncture; acu-pressure in the temples work well; One should always check with ones doc to make sure the stimulant is okay BEFORE you take anything. Hope some of these things give you at least, some different approaches. |
Ok here is something I have been thinking about. When she has a migraine, does it go away when the sun goes down?? When I was younger and I would get them, they would last all day until the sun went down. (I know this sounds weird, but its true) With my migraines, no over the counter medicine will work, I suffered for many years. Then I moved to Florida and got a new MD. She put me on Imitrex. Its a life saver. Of course you wouldn't want to put your daughter on meds if she doesn't have to. But its truely a wonderful medication. :D When I have migraines sometimes I have to throw up (which means I can not keep the pill form of the medication down) I throw up everthing, even the water I use to rinse out my mouth from brushing my teeth. But now I have the injection type (statdose) and within 15 minutes, the pain is gone! :p I still have to lay down, but after an hour or 2 I'm GREAT! ;) Another thing to check into is the pollen counts, Keep your self as record of her migraines and the pollen count in your area, You might find a connection. Keep us informed about your daughter. Hope you find some relief for her! |

Jesscruz, I am so sorry for your daughter. I get migraines too and I have never figured out what trigger them but I agree that Excedrin Migraine is the only thing that works for me and I have prescription medicine. I am not sure if a child can take it though. |
I don't know if I get migranes but i do get headaches. I get different headaches from different things and i have to figure out what kinda headache I have to find what to take to get rid of it. I have problems with my sinuses so humid whether makes them flare up and i get sinus headaches. I get PMS headaches (really bad). Stress headaches. headaches from my back being out. If i get more than one kind of headache at the same time i'm incapacitated. i also get headaches when i'm dehydrated. Caffeine can be a major trigger of headaches that's why chocolate, coffey and pop can give you headaches. I would keep a journal. In the journal I would write down the weather, pollen count, humidity, everything she ate, everything she drank, everything she did, the amount of time spent outside and any other factors that you can think. Then write down if she gets a migrane or not. hopefully after a couple of months you will notice a pattern and then can adjust her lifestyle based upon that. The medication might also be giving her headaches. I got the worst migrane of my life from migrane medicine because it dehydrated me. Just some suggestions if you can pinpoint the exact causes she may be able to live a life in less pain. I really feel for her. Wish her the best for me. |
For migraine sufferers.....I've had them for years. I tried Imitrex, and also many over the counter pills. Last year my doctor gave me a new med. It's called Relpax, and it's an absolute godsend. Unlike Imitrex, you can take it after the migraine starts. When I take the pill, 90% of the time my migraine is gone in about half an hour. Now that I take Relpax, don't know how I lived without it. :) |
That sounds like something I should look into. Do you know if it affects your blood pressure? I have one question for you about imtrex??, Did you ever try imtrex after you had a migraine?? Because I almost always take it after the migraine has started. I have even taken it when the migraine was in full bloom. And it has always worked for me.. |

I'm not sure if it affects blood pressure, that would be a good question for my doctor though. I'm glad Imitrex is working for you--it's nice when you find something that does. I just never seemed to have luck with it. My doctor has said that Relpax (which is a fairly new drug) is working really well for a lot of people. Not sure what the side effects are compared to Imitrex. Sorry I couldn't be more help :) |
I really feel for your child. I've had migraines all my life and so have my 4 sisters and mom. I've been through all the otc medications and nothing was working. I finally saw my doctor and now have meds for it. Fioricet, butalibital (generic) and zomig have been working for me. I just called in today for a new prescription. I can only get 20 tablets at a time. I'll have to ask about the Relpax if I end up going into the doctor's office for a new checkup. At 43, I can say that the only time I've been without my headaches is when I was pregnant for my children. Best of luck! |
here's an update on my kaylee since i posted, she hasn't had one since then. i really think that it was the strawberries this time! so no fresh strawberries for her :( she's sad but she understands and she says: "it's okay mommy i don't want to have migranes anymore" so slowly but surely were figuring what she can and can't eat, what temp her surroundings have to be,etc....once again i really want to thank everyone for your kind words and advise :) i thank you all from the bottom of my heart  |
