we found a turtle
 
my sisters found a little turtle in back of our house this morning, and we brought him in our backyard. he won't really come out of his shell too much because he's still really scared. do any of you have any idea what we could feed him or what we can do to make him more comfortable? oh and by the way they named him speedy gonzalez lol:p

The only thing I know to feed them is lettuce. Tricksie would have a ball if we had a turtle.

Do you know what kind of turtle? Is it a water turtle like a Slider, or is it land turtle like a Box Turtle?

We've had lots of Sliders (many from the wild) - they are quite intelligent and really very friendly once they feel safe. I always wanted a Box Turtle but never did, so I don't know much about those.

he's definetly not a slider, we used to have one. i'm pretty sure its a box turtle. my dad built him a thing outside for now, and if it works out we'll probably buy a cage or soemthing. i'll get some pictures in a little and put them up so you guys can tell me for sure

That's so exciting! I've never even seen a land turtle in the wild (or released or escaped from captivity). I have heard that they are more shy than water turtles. Turtles are so cute.

ok so they decided they don't like the name Speedy, and now he's going to be Bubble:rolleyes:
i got a few pictures, but they aren't that great since i took them with my phone and he's still pretty scared

do you guys know what kind of turtle this is, and what they eat, how they should live, etc?

2. where we're keeping him for now (we'll probably go to the pet store sometime this week and get somewhere better to keep him)

I don't know, but he's really huge! Do you live in an area where he might have been a pet that wandered off? He is soooo cool! :turtle:

i don't think so:confused::confused: there's woods in back of my house, and they found him hiding out there. he seems scared of us, so i don't think he was someones pet, but then again it could just be because he doesn't know us

He's CUTE!! I've heard of people having "pet" turtles that just hung out in the backyard. These were turtles that originally came from the wild. What if you kept him in the little area he is now, since it's still partially in your backyard, until he got used to you? Then you could let him roam your backyard. If you feed him, I'm sure he'd stick around. He'd probably like it a lot more in the backyard vs. a cage. Just a thought.

Personally i would put him back, He may have a family out there & would be better off.

yeah i would except my neighbors are building a house in place we found him, and the woods aren't really big, just a little hill with trees on it, so i don't know how he found water or anything before

idk we might just end up doing that, and bring him inside for the winter. i guess we'll wait and see what happens

He is cute, i keep land turtles or tortoises as we call them in the UK. You need to be feeding him weeds such as dandelions, vetch, plantain, hawkbit. Lettuce is just water content and has no nutritional value. The little outdoor enclosure you have for him is perfect, but maybe you could put mesh on the top to secure him from predators? As long as the temps dont drop lower than 10 degrees celcius he will be fine outdoors. If the temps do drop the ideal indoor home for him would be a indoor rabbit cage, where you can attach a heat lamp and UV tube. He really is a cutie! good luck with him! :)

Bubble looks alot like Fred - a box turtle that lived in the woods behind our house and would stroll across our patio daily. We just put out pieces of fruit and veggies for him and let him go on his merry way.

Tortoises and turtles can make good pets!!! Desert tortoises are protected, and you can apply to be a custodian of one here, if you have a proper, walled yard. But no dog owners--dogs can kill them. They live to be over 100 years old, and they hibernate all winter. My friend has one who has quite a personality. He knocks on their sliding glass door to come in for a visit....but he lives outside in a little den they built for him.

WARNING regarding all reptile pets: Salmonella is a natural part of their digestive system. Always wash your hands after handling any reptile.

We have alot of those in our backyard(wooded area) we also dont have water back there. We usually just let them be since they might have a turtle family looking for them ;) My kids will play with them for a minute and then i tell them to put them back where they got it from.
