we keep baby chicks inside a lot longer. We have little critters that like to thieve baby chicks.:(

You can check Craig's List for chicks, alot of people will get them from hatcheries and then post the extras on there. There is also a website called My Pet Chicken: Purchase a Chicken Coop, Baby Chicks, Raise Chickens in Your Backyard, Learn About Chicken Breeds! that lets you order just a few chicks. I made an incubator using a box lined in foil and a light bulb for chicken eggs as a kid. I had to get up every 2 hours and rotate those things too.

I taught my chicks....tricks! I was alaskayorkie BEFORE there was an alaskayorkie. ;)

Any way...you're right...they are not cute long.

If you decide to hatch chicks in the house please be careful. Several years ago, I hatched some cochins inside because I wanted them to "bond" to me. I had them safely in a box on the top of a counter. When I came home from work, something was wrong..... Chattie was on her favorite chair and she had a "squeeky toy". She was really upset 'cause the toy wasn't squeeking anymore. I was heartbroken 'cause her "toy" was my favorite of the baby chicks. It had hopped to the top of the box (how I don't know) and had fluttered to the floor..... enter Chattie and the terrier terror hunting instinct.....

The remaining chicks went down to the barn and were safely installed in a stall.

If you haven't found the chicks/eggs yet, check to see if your state has an "ag" newspaper -- Georgia has something called the "Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin" that comes out twice monthly. It is a free publication and is also on the web -- Category Index

Yeah, I think we raised them once or twice we kept them inside awhile longer too. I believe it was reaaally cold out when I got them.

I remember their "dust" was on EVERY surface in the garage. :eek:

Aw, that's horrible. I would have never thought that they would fly that young! :eek:

We used to have some of the ones with the weird feathers on their heads and some with feathers on their feet. They were pretty.

We also had one like this one:

Kyle, there's an Agway over here in NJ (Rt. 130 S near Burlington). Call them. They usually have chicks.

Those are some freaky chickens! The one's with the long feathers on their feet are really cool. Did any of them lay colored eggs? I used to watch Martha Stewart and her blue and green eggs were so pretty it made me want chickens. I don't think my HAO would have gone for it though.:p
