Why is horse racing still legal?

Why is horse racing, or the racing of any animal for that matter, still legal?

I can't believe people, especially those who claims to be an animal lover, still watch it despite all that contentiously happens.

So frustrating and upsetting...

SladesMommy 05-03-2008 03:26 PM

Sadly its all about the $$$

YorkieAunt 05-03-2008 03:34 PM

Race horses are very spoiled and very well cared for. Most of them actually enjoy the race because they can run. The little whip that is used by the jockies, called a crop, does not hurt a horse. It is the sound it makes that scares them and makes them run faster. Maybe all horse riding should be ban then? Please inform yourself before making an opinion on such matters. I have worked at a track and have worked with horses all my life and there is nothing cruel about racing or riding horses!

That's true. That doesn't excuse those who watch (and don't bet and such) though.

Right back at ya. :)

What percentage of horses that are bred for horse racing actually "succeed?" What happens to those who don't?

I vowed to post positive...

romeos mommy 05-03-2008 06:04 PM

ellie81 05-03-2008 06:38 PM

BubblPopElectrc 05-03-2008 06:54 PM

crystalsmom 05-03-2008 07:01 PM

They are such gorgeous animals and they race them way too young. I cried over Barbaro and now this.:(

sammiz 05-03-2008 07:07 PM

I am not a fan of horseracing. I have never watched one.

I had to go find out what happened. What a sad shame!

"The day began with hope and pomp. Bolstered by the sentimental support from 157,770 fans and endorsed by presidential contender Hillary Clinton and cheered by daughter Chelsea, the filly finished second in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday."

Nobody seems to understand what happened nor how.

I found this article and I am in agreement with the writer:

How in the world did she break both ankles? And how did the horse the day before die? under what circumstances?

crystalsmom 05-03-2008 07:23 PM

I only watch the Kentucky Derby and as much as I love to watch these beautiful horses, I'm quite sure I have watched my last one.

CricketBaby 05-03-2008 07:26 PM

I was disturbed by what happened to the little filly today! If I remember correctly didn't something similar happen to another horse last year. Hello....maybe these horses are too young for such activity. I think people do lots of inhumane actions for money! Sorry to be a negative nelly but she wanted to live like everyone else!

I thought I would post this. It's a couple of years old but still factual/relevant.

Barbaro injury focuses industry on safety - Horse Racing - MSNBC.com

Last year, 57,495 races were run in the United States and Canada for a total of 469,644 starts, according to statistics compiled by the Jockey Club. Using Nunamaker’s figure, that means about 704 horses died while racing in 2005 in the United States and Canada, about 1.93 fatalities per day.

“Almost two a day? I think that’s an awful lot, don’t you?” says Nunamaker. “And that doesn’t count a whole group that break down in training.”

mizzwanned 05-03-2008 08:49 PM

I heard the news right now, its soooo sad:( I can't believe he died. One woman today at my job asked if we knew who won the race cause she didn't see it, i don't watch, i never do but when i came home i saw it online. she wont be too happy to hear the news

chattiesmom 05-03-2008 08:56 PM

The sad sad thing about horse racing is that it is a multi-billion dollar a year industry. It is one of the most dangerous sports known to man. And one of the saddest of all things about horse racing is that horses are started in training long before they are physically mature and all too often way too much is asked of them way too soon.

Our senior breeding stallion was owned by one of the foundation Quarter Horse breeders. He was put on the track and was injured in training but was raced anyway. Even before Staint was a mature horse his legs were damaged for life from the carelessness of the track trainers. He has proven to be an incredible breeding horse and a good friend, but his usefulness as a "riding horse" ended before it began.

The very first filly born on our farm was a grand-daughter of the infamous Three Bars. Although she gave us every indication that she would be a great runner, we refused to give her the opportunity - we were unwilling to put her at risk in the hard training before her body was mature enough to withstand the heavy pounding. By the time she was mature enough, I loved her too much to let her go.

Well, KUDOS to you!

It is wonderful to know that there are some who make the best decision for the animal instead of the best decision for their wallet.

Personally, I don't bet on anything at all. I could not live with betting on animal performance. It would be different if we coud say "Do you really want to do this?"...but we can't. And they couldn't respond if we did...soooooo...

And I wouldn't make them do something that put them in danger. Ever. For any reason.

IMO, Race horses are only spoiled and very well cared for when they are champions/still useful to their owner.

I know a bit about horses - I rode for 8 years and worked around them for about 6 of those 8. I still go occasionally, but I gave up going very often because I started voice lessons.

This is a post I made on another forum about this very subject:

I've never supported horse racing, and that's exactly why. Horses live to be 30+, but when they are race horses they are broke and ridden TOO hard WAY too early. When they start training them, their bones aren't even fully hardened and formed yet. It results in accidents like that, and an incredible animal loses a chance to have a normal life, if any life at all.

The only horse race I've ever even watched was the one when Barbaro was injured, and that just devestated me and reinforced my disliking for it. Horses are incredible, majestic animals. They deserve more than being locked in trailers and stalls going from race to race - only being appreciated when they become champions and make their owners money.

Horse racing is a very hot topic for me.

red98vett 05-04-2008 03:51 AM

Megan GREAT Post as always -

I was susposed to go to a Derby party but decided after they put Barbaro to sleep I just couldn't muster up any enthusiam - and now hearing that poor filly having to be put down I think the sport is cruel .....I'm sure her owners are devestated but that's the chance you take when you put horses thru this and they all know it.

It won't stop because everthing is about the $$....

red98vett 05-04-2008 04:03 AM

I've been reading - and I'm shocked at the amount of deaths from racing - we only hear about the big horse names ....this is copied from a site I just read where they're blasting Races such as the Derby

Quote:

So, how many other equine deaths are there every year that go unnoticed in a sport that's largely ignored on a day-to-day basis?

Let's just take one track, like Del Mar near San Diego: 55 deaths from 2004-06, says the San Diego Union-Tribune.

55 DEATHS from ONE RACE TRACK....:eek:

I feel bad - my husband used to like going to the Track near us in Houston.....I admit it was fun winning money - but NEVER AGAIN will I bet on a horse race.:(:(:(:(

Since you were unaware of the cruelty involved in horse racing, I am sure you have found the rest of this thread very informative. I always learn so much here also.:) BTW, I don't think that I've ever seen Kyle post on something he was uninformed about.:)

I love to ride horses and love horses!!! I know these horses are well taken care of and pampered but the cruelest thing about this sport is that they race the sh*t out of colts and fillies that are not full grown. A horse is not full grown until it is 5 or 6 years old. These horses are being pushed to the limit at 2 and 3 years of age. Its no wonder that there are so many "accidents" on the track. And all of this because it is not cost effective to keep a horse until it is full grown to make $$$$$$$$$$$$ on it. So it is in fact a cruel sport.

Are you directing this at me? I think I am the only one that posted about watching the race but not betting. I f you have something to say about me, here I am. Say it to my face instead of insinuations. YES, I watched the Derby. Yes, I watch it every year. NO I don't bet or DRINK MINT JULIPS or anything else and YES I am an animal lover. I live right in the heart of racing land and i know for a fact that these race horses are treat far better than most people treat the yorkies they claim to love. Oh and BTW, even tho I don't bet, I did have a favorite. It was the horse that was put down at the end. One filly with the guts and stamina t run with the big boys and almost won the whole thing.. Most people so against it don't have a clue into horse racing. i show yorkies too. Tell me, what is the difference? I don't keep my yorkies in crates of anykind but the big time show people usually do. Oh dear, they might break their coats in they get it on the grass or carpet. Our race horses are kept far better than most show dogs.
