We dont know what he got bit by but we woke up to his face like this this morning. We have been giving him benadryl as the vet told us to before when this happened but check out his face. Poor baby.

His muzzle is all swollen and his left eye is all puffy. :( :(

MeganS 07-26-2005 03:09 PM

oh the poor little guy!! i feel so bad for you and recon!! maybe he got stung by a bee? i'm not sure but it might have made it swell up like that. i hope your little guy is doing better soon!!

ReconsMomma 07-26-2005 03:12 PM

We are thinking that it was a spider cause he was fine when we went to bed and then when we woke up this is what he looked like.

KC Cutie 07-26-2005 03:13 PM

I've seen both a cat and a dog swell up like that because of snake bites.

Rex'z momma 07-26-2005 03:15 PM

not so sure it was a spider because tha would meen the spider bit recon somewhere then got off and bit him again, i think it was something else because if it was a spider< then recon would be alert and i dont think the spider would strike again

ReconsMomma 07-26-2005 03:18 PM

There isn't too much that it could have been cause he is at the end of my bed or on the bedroom floor all nite long. He cant go anywhere but in my room cause I close the door at nite with him in there.

Rex'z momma 07-26-2005 03:21 PM

perhaps a wasp? or a moquito, or a really big bee

MeganS 07-26-2005 03:22 PM

then it might have been a spider. that does make since. rexz momma- spider bites usually don't hurt, and you don't know they are there until a little after, at least in my exiperance. if he was in a deep sleep he might not have known. just a thought.

lycansmom 07-26-2005 03:22 PM

poor recon....hope he gets to feeling better

red98vett 07-26-2005 03:24 PM

POOR BABY !! Spider or a bee ? That is really swollen - Go SEE this site - it looks JUST like his face...http://www.balgownievet.com.au/1_gen...e%20stings.htm

I hope he's ok !!

ReconsMomma 07-26-2005 03:27 PM

He is feeling better. Keeps shaking his head. I have also been icing his schnoze for him. Seems to relieve it a little.

I think it was a spider cause I have had something similar in the past happen with me. Never felt the bite but suffered from it.

Sherry Lynn 07-26-2005 03:45 PM

I think a spider...

with a quick get away, 'cuz Recon would have kicked its butt if he caught it!!!

Spiders can bite more than once, and you don't always know it, and usually the bites are in the same area of the body. (I live in a wooded neighborhood and we have tons of all different kinds of spiders!) Sometimes the bites don't hurt, sometimes they just itch and sometimes they sting/swell like crazy!!

I'm sure he'll be fine, but keep an eye on him because the can also carry staph infections. If it doesn't calm down in a day or two or gets worse, you may want to take him in.

I had a bite on my stomach and it started to spread - big, red, swollen, itchy hive-like things! Ewwww!!! On the second day I went to the walk-in clinic, and they gave me a shot that calmed it down in a couple of hours.

I would imagine they have something similar for doggies...

Poor baby. Meanwhile, if it's as hot :sun: where you are as it is here, I'm sure he's loving the ice packs!

orinskye 07-26-2005 03:49 PM

my moms dog did that same thing when i was watching them for the weekend..... i freaked out i didnt want her to come home and say i tried to kill her dog  ..... we concluded that it had to be a wasp, there arent any really dangerous spiders around my parents house, but there are wasps a plenty........ it swelled up just like recons and lasted a week at least... she kept shaking her head and scratching at it, eventually she scratched a puncture in the effected area and it started to puss and blead out (sorry for the gross description...... but thats what it was)

maggiepie 07-26-2005 04:21 PM

Sometimes, they get like an abcess. My son had a couple of cats that got it before. Ask the vet about that.......I can't remember what they called it.

iheartyorkies 07-26-2005 04:36 PM

Poor baby!! Icing it is probably a good idea. Hope he's not in any pain. Just keep an eye on him.

red98vett 07-28-2005 05:07 AM

I was wondering how Recon is doing Kelly - is his swelling down on his nose ? Did you go to the vet ?

Poor baby - I keep seeing his little swollen nose and hoping the swelling went down on it's own....

jennifermcb 07-28-2005 05:14 AM

Poor Recon! He looks miserable.

Here's sending good thoughts your way. I hope ya'll get some good news from the vet.

JCarlson2004 07-28-2005 05:46 AM

Maybe a mosquito? I hope little (or should I say big hee hee) Recon feels better soon! It's no fun to be sickies.

ReconsMomma 07-30-2005 07:17 PM

Sorry all, I forgot to update this to let you know what we found out.

first we took him to the vet and come to find out we weren't giving him enough benadryl. We were giving him enough for say, Memphis. I felt so guilty, I just didn't want to over dose him. Vet said to give him one adult benadryl every 4 hours. Said he had multiple small bites on his muzzle. Thought it was either earwigs (EWWWWWW) or ants.

So I was out in the yard picking up poo and sticks getting ready to mow and I found an area of my yard that is full of ant hills. I stepped on the hills ( I know Im mean) and before too long the little ***tards were biting me. We figure that when Recon was out on his last night patrol of the yard before bed he must have gotten into the ants and we didn't notice anything and the full affect of them was when we got up in the morning.

I bought some spray and sprayed the yard for them. So hopefully no more problems. Recon is himself again. In fact him and I did a fundraiser for the local rottie rescue that I deal with here today. It was a 10k run/walk with your dog.
