Rebate Check Questions....

I'm not sure if I qualify for those rebate checks that are being sent out. So can anyone help me with the qualifications? I filed as single and I only got a whopping $5 tax return.:p

Bizzymammabee 05-01-2008 07:35 AM

The fact that you filed and probably made more than $1k to file for you should get one back. You might not get the whole amount being alloted depending on your income but you should get back.

The fact that you only got back $5 is because you probably had no deductions and did the ez forms (is that how you filed?).

kuku2121 05-01-2008 07:40 AM

This information comes strait off the irs website: To receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, $3,000 of income and file a 2007 federal tax return. IRS will take care of the rest. Eligible people will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17. So as long as you made over $3000 you should get the full amount depending on whether you are married or not and have children.

bchgirl 05-01-2008 07:43 AM

If you go on irs.gov ....there's a form you can fill out that will tell you whether you qualify and the amount you'd receive.

Yea I had the EZ form. My gross for the year was only $300. I only worked for 3 months.:p

sallen15 05-01-2008 07:48 AM

This is straight from the irs.gov website

Are you eligible? The vast majority of people who file a 2007 income tax return qualify, and many who don't regularly file a tax return may qualify as well. You're eligible if you have a valid Social Security Number (SSN), can't be claimed as a dependent on a tax return and have either an income tax liability or "qualifying income" of at least $3,000. Qualifying income includes any combination of earned income and certain benefits from Social Security, Veterans Affairs or Railroad Retirement. Additional information is below, and a full legal description is available in Revenue Procedure 2008-21.

So I don't think that you will be recieving a stimulus check since you only made $300. Sorry.

Were you claimed as a dependent on someone else's return? Like a college student claimed on their parent's return. If that's the case...you won't receive one and neither will they receive anything for claiming you. To receive the extra 300 bucks for dependents...the dependent had to be under 17 years of age.

No. My parents don't claim me on their taxes.

Brianna2191 05-01-2008 10:14 AM

Ok..so there is also another qualification. Tax liability...the lady at the irs told me that you have to have 600 or over in tax liabilty to get the full amount. I am married and have a child and only got 900 dollars rather than the 1500 we were hoping for...because we don't have any tax liablilty. Whatever that really means

missj2007 05-01-2008 10:52 AM

Well this makes me wonder about me:(. I made 3,333 2007 year and received 100 back. I am a student but my mother did not claim me on her taxes. i used the calculator and it said i would receive 300 but now im puzzled:confused:

Your liability is the amount of tax on your federal adjusted gross income. In other words...your federal tax for the year was less than 600 bucks.

hmmm I am gonna have to check on that then because we got taxed a heck of a lot more than 600 dollars.

Tiggerwit 05-02-2008 05:31 PM

I don't think this is as they make it sound. I'm dubious. My friend is married and has one child they claimed. To me based off the IRS website she gets $1200 for married couple plus $300 for each qualifying child for a total of $1500.

However she checked with our accountant the other day who said she will only get $900.

The accoutants got the updated software supposedly and said that it is a bit more involved then the IRS leads on. It's also dependant on other facts such as if you file a schedule C and stuff like that.

So we shall see.

juliaw04 05-02-2008 06:45 PM

I'm not going to get one because my parent's claimed me. :(

jrsygal37 05-02-2008 06:49 PM

Does anyone know when the checks are supposed to be mailed out?

Thanks.
Elaine

SladesMommy 05-02-2008 06:49 PM

I don't get one because I didn't make 3,000.. at least reported. Most of my work in nannying type stuff, and thats not reported.

I know many who had direct deposits are supposed to receive theirs very soon. I imagine the checks will be mailed out shortly afterward.

I love how I seem to rely on YT for all my reliable news! ;)

So if my kids are over 17 but still dependents of mine (in college) there is no rebate for them (either to them or to us) even if they worked and paid taxes, correct? That really doesn't seem fair. The 17 to 22 years olds are the ones that would spend their rebates putting it back into the economy the pay the prez wanted us to, because they don't have a mountain of debt to apply it to yet (hopefully besides student loans).

That is what I want to know will I not receive one because of me being in college. I was not in college when I started working though I was in high school but 18, and the money for my college is from student loans no money out of parents pockets, i am so lost lol

My boyfriend is in the same situation as you. Hes so mad about it because his parents didn't contribute to his college.

But the parents don't get it either, right? I could understand if the parents still got the $300 because the government assumes they are still supporting the kids for the most part. I had planned on just giving my kids their $300 from my rebate. But now it appears that NO ONE gets $$ for the 17-22 college kids. That doesn't make any sense.

I agree that this isn't fair. My parents aren't helping pay for college at all. I've worked all year, I payed taxes, but yet since my parents can still claim me, I don't get a rebate check.:( I could really use that money too.

I just assumed that most parents with college kids that worked and/or were paying their own college costs would just hand over the $300 to their kids. I'm helping one and the other has a scholarship, but I had planned on giving it to them. Now I have to tell them that our rebate is half what I thought. I don't know how I missed that stipulation! Ugh!!

Right the parents don't get it either. I personally think that teens and young adults would spend more of this money than older people. Does paying bills classify as "stimulating the economy." Thats what my mom is doing with hers. Lol.
