My Lasik (PRK) Countdown ... I'm soooo excited!! I'm having PRK (a different method of Lasik) done on May 7th!! YAYAYAYAYAYAY! :D PRK is a bladeless and flapless procedure and I wanted that instead of traditional lasik because they do NOT create a flap on the eye (so there's no risk of flap related complications down the road to worry about). Has anyone had PRK or Lasik before? Any tips or advice? I'm nervous but excited at the same time. My doc gave me a prescription for valium; so hopefully that will keep me calm during the procedure. :D |
I haven't heard of the PRK...what is the difference in price...I imagine it is more costly than Lasik, right? What is the recover time, compared to Lasik? I am still wanting to have that done....... Good luck...I can't wait to hear how it goes! |
Not sure but I just saw this article on CNN. LASIK patients share tales of pain, suffering - CNN.com |
I had lasik done and it's the best thing I've ever done for myself. I am so pleased with it. It's been 3 years for me. Good luck! |

The main difference between PRK and Lasik is this: Lasik - Doctors cut a flap in the cornea (which is a clear protective covering on your eye ball) and zap it with the laser to reshape the cornea. PRK - There is NO flap created. No blade. No cutting. As a result, there is no nerve damage done to the eye. Just to give you an example, one of the issues associated with flap related nerve damage is dry eye. The nerves in your eyes send a signal to tell yourself when to produce tears to keep your eyes moist. Well, sometimes when the flap is created, the nerves are damaged and that message can be disrupted, resulting in mild to sometimes even severe dry eye. I've also heard that the flap never really heals and seals back onto the eye properly. I don't know how true that is but it's something I heard a few times and it was enough to make me opt against traditional Lasik. PS - Having said all this, there are MANY people who did have traditional Lasik and have fabulous results. I myself just don't want to risk it. |

I had Lasik done 3 years ago and it was the best thing ever. The worst part (And isnt' even THAT bad) is when they are actually cutting the flap. You just feel pressure on your eye which is an odd feeling and your vision goes blurry. But that lasts... 10 seconds.... the rest of the day your eyes are sore but not in pain. I'd do it again in a second.. it was the best thing i've ever done |
I had lasik done almost 8 years ago, best thing ever! I even went to Canada to have it done because it was only $1,000. It was a piece of cake. |

I had Lasik in 2001. Best money I ever spent!! I couldn't find my glasses without glasses prior to it, I was so nearsighted. My advise -- Take ALL the Valium you are entitled to, if they say take 2...take 2. I was given 2 and told I could take them both, but I took 1. Then I was complaining during the procedure I could feel it when she (the doctor) did the left eye, in actuallity I probably couldn't. So take 2 if you can. LOL! Oh, I see fine now 7 years later. But I do now need reading glasses for close work or reading. Doesn't bother me at all to have those little cute reading glasses because I just wear them as needed. Not like before... when I HAD to wear glasses just to get thru life. |

Are you having traditional lasik (w/ the blade) or intralase lasik (the one w/ the computer that creates the flap)? |
I had some flap complications on that left eye. 'cause remember I didn't take both my valiums and then was saying "I can feel it!".. so the doctor put more deadening drops, then the flap wouldn't adhere back down very well after the procedure. It was more "mushy" due to the extra deadening drops. So I wound up with a Corneal Abrasion on that eye, and man those hurt like HECK!! Worse than HECK... input expletives! %*$&$%& Thats how bad it hurt. But the doctor was so wonderful she saw me very regularly, like every day or other day for a while until I was out of the woods re: pain from the abrasion. I had a temporary contact on it as a bandaid for a little while, but she said it would heal slower that way...and if I would be tough, she'd remove the contact bandaid and I'd heal sooner. So I said I was tough, and she removed it, and the pain went away in time. It took a little longer for that eye to heal up, but I'd still do it again in a heartbeat!! I am soooo happy with the results. 3 valium? Yep now knowing what I know ..I'd take it! Just so I'd shut up and not need more deadening drops, which in turn caused an abrasion. |
