Grocery Shopping SHOCK!! Milk and produce seem to have hit us the hardest in this area. One bunch of carrots that was .99 cents a month ago is $1.99 and I got a small bunch of grapes $5.70.....how can a family do it. What is it like in your area?? |
It's rediculous here in NY. I was just reading an article that centered on moms doing a lot of bargain shopping and also looking into making their own cleaning supplies etc. It's scary how expensive things are getting. |
Yes, it is defintiely getting ridiculous. |
its sad all over and only going to get worse,, i'm afraid,,,and everybody making a huge profit but the farmer,,, |
... wow ... I know Milk is expensive in FL ..... 4 $ for a small Carton of Lactose Milk ..... |

milk here for 1 gallon yesterday was $4.19!!!! Its a crime what our gov is doin to us all! Great reason to get out and VOTE! |
It is ridiculous. I really budget myself and ts still $90 or more a week with only 3 of us. I really dont buy any convenience foods and only sometimes buy cookies or things from the bakery. I dont know how larger families do it. I try to buy only what we need |
It is definitely getting harder. Very vicious cycle. Seems like the poor keep getting poorer and the rich just richer. There will be a point where there is no middle class...just the haves and have nots. |
you got that right beth:thumbup: |

My children are grown and I still spend a lot at the grocery store. Actually, I am on my way now to the store as soon as I can get away from YT. |
I live in the CA Bay Area. It is known for being one of the most expensive places, but it is getting even worse. I have a family of 6 plus Leo and I am spending a small fortune to feed them every week. **I also have two boys with life-threatening food allergies. On some brands I can not by a cheaper or different item, because they are not "safe" for the boys. a gal of milk...$4.50 my kids drink at least two a week. organic gal of milk...$6.50 butter (store brand) ...$3.50 organic butter (store brand) ...$4.50 16 oz Jake Cheese...$4.50 12 ct eggs (Store brand)...$3.50 oraganic (store brand)...$4.00 Bread (sara lee wheat)...$4.50 Cheerios...$5.70 Safeway brand chicken (boneless/skinless)...$3.50 a pound Organic...$8.99 a lb Grapes...$3.50 a lb apples (bag)... $3.00-$5.50 Broccoli...$3.70 lb Carrots... $0.75 lb |
OMG grocery shopping is ridiculous that's for sure....you have to start shopping at more than one place to get the bargains but then you have to think twice about where they are located because the gas prices are on the rise here too! OMG gas is up to $3.50 here and it's not even summer yet. Not even the coupons are helping out anymore (not with 25 cent coupons) the mfgs. need to start raising those to at least 50 cents and higher to get any benefit from that. OMG look at how much a box of cereal costs these days. |
COST OF SUCH GROCERY ITEMS as milk and other dairy products, eggs and bread have lightened the pockets of customers nationally and locally. A gallon of milk at some stores has gone up about 30 cents in the past week. :( On a national level, the economy leaves shoppers scouring for coupons, discounts and any break they can get. Locally, in a city where the median household income in 2005 was an estimated $27,600, that shift in cost of living has shaken some families into uncertainty, making many pinch their pennies as they never had before. “Sometimes it feels like you walk into the store, spend $60 and only come out with a couple of things, “The cost of living seems to have gone up without our pay doing the same.” |
I know CHICKEN is sooooo expensivE!! I also wanted to buy some hamburger patties I freaked at the price! It went up about 4DOLLARS since a month ago! For those of you that buy at Sams Club, are the pricing better? I stopped buying there and didnt renew my membership because it wasnt worth it at the time but I am wondering if the prices are better? |
another thing... eating healthy has always been MORE expensive, but at these prices its HORRIBLE.. its easier and cheaper to buy processed bad food than it is fresh and healthy.. and that bites! |

Oh gah! Lets not even talk about the price of milk. I LOVE eating oreos and milk. I go through a gallon of milk within a few days. It is $3 in Chicago. Sometimes I can get lucky and get it for $2.50. I'm a BIG fruit lover too. I love all kinds of fruit, but its so expensive. I don't get to eat it much.:( To make things even worse, my boyfriend and I eat organic food. Thats always about $2-$3 more than the regular food. |
A gallon of oragnic milk here is about $10. I kid you not! It is crazy! Food prices are rising like crazy, and it is very scary. A tiny carton of almond mild is $3.50. I remember buying a gallon of milk for that!! |
It's just the same over here. Every time I go shopping the bill has gone up. Bread is now double the price it was before Christmas, milk up 80%, all meat & fruit & vegetables up. And petrol :( It's equivalent to $10.4 a gallon here now......over 75% of that is tax to our grasping government :( |

It's so hard to eat entirely organic, especially in times like these. We have tons of farms around here, so luckily we can buy locally, especially since we are coming into season. We can get fruit and veggies for soo cheap. That's a positive. |
I hear you! About $4 for a gallon of milk and $3 for a dozen eggs. I don't know where this is all going to end because these prices can not keep going up like this. It's sad when fresh fruits and veggies have become a luxary item. I can't wait for summer to get here....NJ is full of produce stands from peoples' own gardens. And they taste better, too! |
it's horrible ! Even milk is at 4.50 to FIVE Bucks a gallon - I swear - I don't know how families do it. It's a culture shock everywhere these days - the gas station - the electric bill - the gas bill and FOOD - when is this going to end ? I used to think prices were already high but nothing compared to this. |

This is so damn frustrating and it's magnified now that hubby is laid off. Ugg....it feels like we can't have anything anymore. |
It's terrible. They run all these ads about how kids need to eat healthey, fresh fruit, etc... and a pound of bananas cost 54-60 cents, one range is 67 cents. it's hard.....I buy only what we have to have, hardly any treats anymore. Maya had a slleep over this past weekend. I spent almost 60 dollars just getting a few bags of chips, dip, drinks and little junk like that that......no real food. Angie |
And try buying free range eggs...more than 5 dollars! Grrr, when will this stop! |
Yes, and it will probably get worse. Now all the corn is being bought up in order to hopefully make a cheaper fuel than gasoline. Too bad it costs more to make the "cheaper" alternative than it does to buy gas. I think it would be cheaper to just drill for oil here in the US and build more refineries. Tell the middle east to go you know where. So now the price of corn has sky rocketed and guess what chickens, cows and sheep eat?? All of the great farm land has been turned into housing projects. Guess what the farmland grew?? Alfalfa, corn, crops, fruit, vegies, etc. The price of gas has gone way up and guess how they deliver all the groceries to the stores? Compile all of that with the amount of theft that goes on and Im surprised that we are not paying ten dollars for a gallon of milk. |
Food shopping here is horrible! The most shocking one for me has been the price of chicken! Im blown away! Chicken is about $7 a package!! Ive never EVER seen it that high! Used to be about $3 - $4! I have started buying a lot of frozen food from trader joes lately, its the only way I can afford to feed myself! HAHA (kidding) Seriously though, the price of food is mental lately! Then again, the price of everything seems mental lately! :( |
We spent $150 on groceries Saturday. We didn\'t buy ANY meat, but did buy 2 packages of turkey lunch meat for the kid\'s lunches. 5 bags of groceries...cereal, chips, snacks for kids lunches and $150 later. :( I use to be able to buy that much for half the price. |
