Anyone have Berber Carpeting?
 

Were really thinking of replacing our carpet in the living room, stairs and upstairs hallway. I love the Berber carpet but I've also heard where dogs nails can get stuck in the loops and that would really be a problem. :(

What carpet do any of you's have? :icon5: Hardwood floors are not an option for us.

I do have it. That doesn't seem to be a problem for mine. Berber holds up really good. It's not easy to clean though. I would never get a light color again.:(

Hi. I just went through this. I was told too that the nails would pull the loops in the berber. I went with frizza (I know I'm spelling that wrong) it is holding up well and we also got the one with the stainmaster dyed right into the carpet. As far as Hardwoods, I know you said they weren't an option. I just thought I'd mention that I would not go with hardwoods anyway because the pee and poo should your pup have an accident will stain as the wood is pourus. I went with laminate in my dining room and I'm thrilled. Lilly is not 100 percent potty trained yet and she had peed and pooped in there and it's cleaned beautifully. Laminate is not pouras and that makes the difference. Elaine

It only took my Moms berber carpeting 6 months to be destroyed by 2 dogs nails. Iknow t also matters hw tight the weave. Good luck:)

Whatever you do, don't get Berber. I have it all over my house (had just been put in when we bought it). Their nails and even the wire that holds the tags on the collar get hung in it all of the time. I'm constantly having to call for repairs! It's a royal pain in the patootie! If I had my choice, I would have wood floors all over. If you go with the Berber you are just asking for frustration and aggravation!:(

Thanks, everyone. Boy, now I don't know what to do. I had my heart set on Berber. :( Sounds like if I would get Berber, I would really have to get the most tightly woven kind in a darker color. But I will also look into that Frizza carpet that jrsygal37 talked about.

Haven't ever really had to purchase carpeting yet. Everywhere we've moved already had decent looking carpeting in already. I won't tell you's how old are carpet is now, but it's really............old. ;)

I know....it is a hard decision. One that you will have to live with for quite a while. I wanted to add that it's also not cheap. If I had it to do over, I would definitely go with laminate flooring & lg area rugs that can easily be replaced. Good Luck!

I have berber, I have NEVER had an issue with nails getting caught in the carpeting.

When we first bought this house we had to replace all the carpets and we got some expert advice on the best and worse ones. We were told that it's a very difficult carpet for the professionals to clean and that it's also difficult if you wear high heels or have a cat or dog. Didn't sound like a carpet we wanted so we got a Fraze. We don't like it, so were going to have wood floors put in the LR and different carpet upstairs in the bedrooms.

I have Berber and love it!!! I've never had a problem with nails getting caught in it. I have a slighty darker color in the living room and love, love, love it. I have a lighter color in the bedrooms and it is the same......love it!!!

We have berber in our den/office and it also has a door to the patio and pool so it's a high traffic area. It's been down close to 3 years now and we have not had a problem.

I love it! My neighbor is a carpet installer and he told me berber is fine with pets as long as you make sure you don't get one that has a continuous loop. What that means is if something does pull a loop, the whole thing won't unravel.

We had berber and you can NEVER get it clean. When we ripped it up to put down hardwood floors, the dirt, grime, and sand under it was just grossly unimaginable. We had to wear masks to get it out the dust was so bad. I would never get berber, it is woven too tightly to ever get really clean.

We have two rooms that have Berber, it was the carpet from the previous owners. I can tell you we hate it and can't wait to rip it up and replace it with a different carpet or laminate.

I didn't care for the light colored berber carpet we had. I got a piece of it caught in the vacuum somehow and it pulled it up for a long way before I caught it. From what I remember, it wasn't very easy to clean (normal cleaning) either. I also had some fraying at the edges in a couple of spots and once it goes, it goes.

We had laminate flooring in our old house with 2 cats. It was very easy to clean. A damp swiffer worked great on it. I have hardwood now and I love it. Accidents clean up and I just use hardwood floor cleaner after I use natures miracle. I have a light colored frieze (sp) carpet in the family room and it's pretty comfortable. Vacuums beautifully.

I have berber in my family room. I have never had a dog or cat have any problem & this is where we spend the majority of our time

I have a light color Berber carpet and it is great.
It cleans up so well, you cannot tell there was ever an accident.

I have a 4.5 lb Yorkie and her nails never get caught. However, I do have her nails clipped every other month.
I am sure others do it more frequently.

I would recommend Berber carpeting,
and I would also recommend Simple Solution's OXY Solution Formula.
It does a fantastic clean up job.

Just had the same thing happen.

I have had the same thing with the vacuum pulling up a few big lines of the berber, however, my carpet is like 9-10 yrs old now.
I am replacing the berber in the dogs room with laminate, I was going to put in tile, however they wanted $2500 :eek: and it is a small 12x12 room. Um, no thanks.

We had berber years ago and never had a problem with the nails. It's not soft like regular carpet but if you get the mixed texture - it looks cleaner longer but IS hard to clean if you get an oooopsie - cause it all gets into the loops

try a short berber (my husband used to be in flooring) so I'm just repeating things I learned from him

We have laminate upstairs and berber downstairs....we never had a problem with nails getting caught but do have a problem with the girls sliding on the laminate but when this becomes a problem we just get their nails cut. We also don't have a problem cleaning our berber...I guess just make sure you put a good quality berber in.

Can I be nosy and ask why you are against wood floors? Let me take it one step further and say that we wanted wood floors in certain areas of our home, but honestly it was too expensive for us. If expense is the issue I'd like to suggest over carpeting to go with wood laminate. It is about the same price for what you would pay for the frizza carpet. I have it in my dining room and it looks beautiful. The key is to get it done by someone that really knows how to install laminate and to choose a good color. We got the color Butterscotch and are thrilled.

The thing with the laminates is that it will not absorb the pee or poop and thus leaves not stain or smell once it's cleaned up. Cleaning is easy with just a little soap and water. Also, their nails will not scratch. It's really tough. Wood does add more value to your home, but with dogs it scratches, and it stains and it's way more expensive as compared to laminate.

Lastly, if you do go with carpet may I suggest the padding we got. I went with a barrier padding. It's new. What it does is if your dog has an accident it will not soak through. It lays ontop of the padding because the padding has a coating on it. It's made especially for pets. This will help a lot in eliminating the padding soaking and smelling. I'm not sure how your Yorks are but mine are pretty good but do have accidents. With a regular rug, and regular padding you'll find you'll be changing it a lot because when they pee it's hard to get it all up without it going through all the way to the padding. The odor remains and the dog will keep peeing. Over time it smells and sometimes you don't notice the smell until damp weather or winter when the air is off and windows are shut. I'm a very clean person but no matter how clean you are over time it just don't work anymore.

I had berber carpet in my townhouse and I HATED IT!!! It would pull and I would have big lines of carpet missing. It looked horrible. We recently bought a new house and there is carpet(don't know what kind) in all of the bedrooms and and my living room. I HATE IT! I'm just not a carpet person. I've been trying to talk my husband into going with a dark cherry laminate in at least out living room. Where ever you have a lot of traffic on carpet...it is always duller than the rest of the carpet. Our house is only 3 years old and there are already spots. I'm always having to call the steam clean company to come and clean it. I do that at least once a month. I HATE spots on carpets. I think it is so nasty. If you go to a flooring store...there are lots and lots and lots of laminates that you could chose from...all different prices..if money is an issue. Hope you make the right choice.

I have Berber carpeting in my bedroom and family room.
I love it. Never had a problem of any kind regarding the dog.
Perhaps it depends on the loop you choose. Mine is a very
tight weave. It shampoos wonderful. It's been down for nine
years and it does not even look worn.
I highly recommed it.

Good luck with what you choose. I want to get new carpet, and I want to get a short shag,but I'm afraid since the pile wouldn't be stacked tight that accidents would be really difficult to clean up.

I have off white berber in the four bedrooms, laminate in the den and hallway, hardwood in the formal dining, ceramic tile in the baths, kitchen, laundry, and dinette. I've had no problems with the berber from kid, g-kids, or doggies. I do not like the laminate and will eventually replace it with hardwood.

I have the Berber..and have never had a problem. Mine is the real tight kind though.. I couldn't find a loop if I dug at it.. so I guess it depends on what kind you get.

I was under the impression that we couldn't put any kind of wood/pergo/laminate flooring down because our house is built on a cement slab and we don't have a basement. :confused: Also, my husband likes carpet better. He says the other stuff I mentioned is cold on his feet in the winter.

Hard wood is great! or tile.

We just got berber carpet in the bedrooms. I absolutely LOVE it! It's the short kind and mixed with different earth tone colors so dirt is easy to hide.
