Anyone an RN?
 

Is anyone studying to be an RN or already an RN? I am trying to get in the nursing program but need some advice...i am currently taking chemisty and know i need bio as well, the problem is what bio should i take?

It is ok...a ton of work. You have to take a biology too? Anatomy and Physiology counts for that here.

I don't know the first thing about it, but my brother wants to be an RN (he's a jr. in high school).

I'm a paralegal student... almost done. BUT, while i sit in all my legal classes i almost feel guilty because I've always wanted to be a nurse! Who knows, maybe someday I'll go to nursing school.

One of my good friends is an RN. She really enjoys her job and gets good pay. We lived together while she went through nursing school and I swear she had no social life! It seemed tough, and those medical books scared me! But she says today that it really wasn't as bad as it looked!

My mom is an Rn, but has been for over 18 yrs, so she makes really good money.

HINT: Once you get enough experience become a travel nurse you can make over $100 an hour, but that all depends on experience.

I got my Bach. Degree in Nursing - so, I'm an RN w/ a BSN (bach. of science in nursing). The type of bio you take is determined largely by the programs you want to get into. As far as I know, most nursing programs require you to have A&P (obviously) and MicroBio. :D

semester 1
nursing foundations- 4.5 units
Basic concept nursing practice 1 -4.5 units

maternal-child & family practice- 4.5 units
concepts nursing practice- 2 gerontology- 5 units

semester 3-
concepts of nursing practice 3- complex altered health issues- 5 units
psychiatric & geriatrics-3 4.5 units

semester 4-
IV Acutes altered health issues 5 units
Nursing management 4 units

and then of course clinical hours

Thanks guys..i feel like i am a failure though. I just went to advisement and the guy confused me more:( i just dont know what to do with myself. Chemistry is tough right now and my teacher is not good at explaining it..ayayay

I'm graduating in May and still don't know what I want to do. I'll probably end up going back and taking more classes and getting another degree, I've thought about nursing, eithers peds or geriatric.

Thanks! Yes i was told what classes i need, and A& P is there and microbiology as well. But i was confused cause there are so many bio's and am not sure if i am staying in my school or transfering. I am still not sure what i am going to do because deadlines for school here are April 1st, most are anyway and i think im too late and my mom doesn't want me to stay in my school so the only thing i can do is take a semester off and i dont want to do that. My gpa is like a 3.0 right now and i was told today they want like a 3.5-.37 gpa for the nursing program at my school, its very competitive, so i am thinking of taking all the bios i need, and get into the bio science program and then switch over to the nursing once my gpa has raised.

No it's a 2 year program....not including the pre reqs.

I have been an RN for almost 25 years. Oh my! There are many places in which you can practice. For bio, I took anatomy and physiology, and microbiology 101.

oo ok that's the one that i would be doing as well. I have the pre-reqs already, except anatomy, some of the sciences needed

I know i want to be one already so bad! My plan is to work as an RN for about 2 yrs, then become a midwife, or see how it goes and if i like it. I also want to do facial work on ppl like laser, etc. as a side job, get my license for that. Travling nurse sounds great too!

Good luck to you in nursing school. I didn't have to take any biology course other than the required Micro and A&P....but I did have to have a high school biology course to get into the RN program I think. It's been so long, hard to recall! I also had to have completed a chem course before I started (which I had never taken chem in H.S and I graduated college with a foreign language major and didn't have to take it for that. Also, b/c I'd been in the foreign language program, the languages sufficed for the sociology requirement (which you have to have to get your license), so I ended up having to take that (I actually challenged both the chemistry and Sociology finals and luckily BARELY passed them, but that was good enough for me). The chem final I only challenged b/c I had decided at the last minute that I wanted to get into the nursing program, a good friend pulled strings to get me into it b/c there was a waiting line, and if I didn't have the chem, I wouldnt' get in at all, so I figured I may as well TRY; I had nothing to lose but a couple of hours. The prof. gave me the book and told me basically what would be on the test, so I managed to squeak by:rolleyes: ).

If you have to take a diff. biology class than the other two I mentioned, it would just be a general life-science course I'm sure.

Oops, I meant to add that actually, I took all my prereqs before I got into the nursing program; I had a MUCH easier time than the people who had to take all that AND do the nursing. I was really glad that I had done that when I saw how hard they were struggling sometimes! I'd already taken a lot b/c of graduating already, but I took the sciences during the summer...kind of sucked, but it worked out for the best!

This is exactly my plan also, I have one more semester of pre reqs then I can apply to nursing schools. The school im in now is VERY competitive a 4.0 is not even good enough. :eek: So Im applying to other schools. We need 2 anatomy&physiology, 2 chemistry, and micro for our sciences.

If you plan to be a midwife - then you need to get your baccalaureate RN (four year) degree in nursing. You can be a lay midwife, but since you will be an RN, you should get your master's degree in midwifery. You can make LOTS of money.

You can't get your master's in midwifery without a BSN (baccalaureate) degree. If you get your 2 year degree (associate degree), then you will have to go back to school to get the BSN, and then go back again to get the MSN in midwifery.

Also you will get lots more training in midwifery in a MSN program and since you will already be an RN, you will be held to a higher standard than a lay midwife. It's just like an RN is held to higher standards of action, in say an emergency situation, than a lay person. So, you really need to get the MSN in midwifery and for that you will need the BSN or 4 year nursing degree.

You are so young, you really should just do the BSN now, because I promise you, you will want it later.

I don't have any bio yet...i just need one more to finish my prereq:rolleyes: The guy told me i should be a translater since i have taken languages and gotten As, i just love languages! But im like no im trying to do nursing!
