oh please no - Mono? Have any of you all had Mono in the past? I went to the doctor today because my glands in my neck have been extreamly swollen, my throat is killing me, my neck hurts so bad and I wake up with a neck ache every morning. She said it was not strep because she tested for strep and its too early i guess to see if it is Mono. I talked to my ex (whom i have been hanging out with for the past week) and asked him if he or sarah (his ex girlfriend) ever had Mono. He said that she had Mono a month ago but he never experianced symptoms of the disease. So my question is - is it possible for someone to have mono kiss another person and for that second person not to have any symptoms and then for that person to give it to a third person? |
i've never heard of it I wanna see what other people say about this wow |
you never heard of mono? "the kissing disease" its more commonly called. It spreads through saliva and the symptoms of mono can last from 3 weeks to 6 months. But when they last for six months or more its called "chronic mono". And I know that if one has mono it may still be present in their saliva for up to 18 months and other people can come in contact with it by kissing, eating off eachothers silverware, sneezing, coughing anything that has to deal with saliva contact. Thats all i know about it. |
i had mono in college from sharing a drink with someone who had mono (tho at the time didn't know it). i was tired all the time, had a headache, ever, and sore throat. it sucked big time. My friend actually had to go to the hospital because his throat was so swollen from it. |
yeah see the only symptom im not having is the tiredness. On Monday night when i first started feeling really really sick i slept from 2:00pm - 4:00pm and then I woke up and went back to sleep from 7:00pm - almost 9:00am. And tuesday night i went to bed at 8:30pm and woke up at 8:30am. But its pretty normal for me to sleep at least 9 hours but not 13 or 12. |
there is an easy mono test that your doc can do right in the office. I'm surprised he didn't do it when you were there. I came home from school and went to my regular doctor (because the school health center told me i had allergies ). I told my regular doctor that i had mono and at first he didn't believe me either, but i told him to take blood and test it and you will see. So he did, and i was right. :D he gave me some ABs and sent me home to sleep. |
yeah she told me that its too early to tell if i have mono and to come back on friday if i am not better by then. The only thing is that if i do have mono i have to go to school tomorrow and friday and i dont want to be giving the other people ther mono. Plus i have to work tomorrow and friday as well and im a waitress. And from what ive heard mono is very contagious. |

I've never had it, but during one really bad sore throat/flu thing they did think that I had it. It doesn't sound fun! |

My daughter had it and then relapsed. She slept constantly, wasn't hungry, lost a lot of weight (some due to stress) and missed about 3 months of school. She'd feel queasy when she'd try and eat so she wouldn't eat. We had to feed her protein drinks and stuff. |
Don't be sharing you're lips! You need to get the test. You may have actually had it before & it never showed up in your system very strong & you just thought you had the flu or something. If that's the case, then you can't get again -- although, some people swear you can. If you have it now you need to take care of yourself!! Let me know if you have it & I can tell you a wonderful herbal remedy I bought off the internet for my daughter 2 yrs ago. My daughter was so sick, she was running a temp though too & sleeping like 17-18 straight. This remedy I bought worked miracles for her. |
I had it in high school from drinking out of someones glass, at least that's what I told my Mom. :) I missed 6 weeks of school. I was sick as a dog. (Oops sorry furbabies!) |
My daughter, the nursing student:D , says yes it is possible to get it from a person with no symptoms...and that it sometimes takes up to 4 weeks for the symptoms to show up. Hope you feel better soon. |
I was just going to say that you can get it from a carrier that does not have symptoms, but I see that was already said. You need to get it treated though if you do have it. In the 6th grade I got it from sharing a soda and I ended up in the hospital for over a week with IV fluids from losing so much weight and being totally dehydrated. My parents only thought I had a cold or something. The pain that comes with it is almost too much to handle when it gets that far without treatment. Good luck. |
Oh NO! I have never had it or known of anyone who has had it, but I hope you get better soon! :love-hug1 I had strep throat once w/ a fever of 105!!!! It was horrible! |

thank you for answering my question as well. Yeah i hope it doesnt get to that extent. I almost feel like nobody really knows how i feel everyone keeps asking favors of me my employer just shrugged it off like i was joking around or something and then told me "next time you come in you really need to write down other peoples phone numbers insted of calling us". that was about the LAST thing i needed to hear from someone. I practically burst into tears after i called everyone that she gave me and my throat hurt so much from talking. |

yes, it can take 3-4 weeks to see signs -- but you've been contagious this whole time -- so without knowing it you could be spreading it - what a wonderful disease  But they say that 80-90% of the population has had it & didn't even know it -- like I said earlier - we can all get it & think we have a bad case of the flew. Some cases of mono are very mild others are absolutely horrid & hang on for mths. Even milder cases can carry symptoms for mths, where you just tire out more easily, are more susceptible to things, etc. |

My oldest boy Justin had it last year ended up in the hospital with a 104 fever and throat so swollen he could not swallow. He got so dehydrated ,He was on pain meds and could not get them down with the swollen throat the IV worked great pain meds and fluids , he was in the hospital 2days. Took him a long time to recover very sleepy and the swollen glands, just no energy .He did test positive for strep also.Poor kid he was miserable. My niece had it when she was 12 also. |
My daughter was very very sick with mono. She had swollen eyes, sore throat, tender stomach, VERY BAD HEADACHE, enlarged spleen, vomiting... I was a wreck because at first they didn't know what was wrong with her. He boyfriend at the time never got Mono and that was very weird cause he should had gotten it. Don't mess around it you have it. Make sure they check your spleen. If it is enlarged you can't do sports for a few months. It can rupture. :( |
