I was on a jury last year. I missed a couple days of work - but I got paid for them. It wasn't bad at all. I'd always wanted to be on a jury but never got called. It was fascinating! I think we should all remember that if you are a citizen of this country - not only is it your Duty, it is a PRIVILEGE to be on a jury. I hope I get called again. I'd do it in a heartbeat! |
I would love to serve on a jury. I have always been excluded, though because my husband was in law enforcement or because I was the victim of a violent crime. They summon, I go. They send me home. It upsets me because I really want to serve. I don't think it is fair that I get excluded for those reasons. |

I've had to be excused, when I ran an inhome daycare I was excused, I would have caused a hardship for 14 parrents, my assistant could not cover it and under CA state law you have to have two adults to have 14 children. So that was a no-go.... but I would have liked to! The last time I went, I spent 6 days in selection and they got their 12 the 6th day, ugh... lol it was to be a 3 month murder trial... a woman defendant no less.. I would have loved to have been on that one.. It was while I was waiting for my trial to begin, so I don't think they would have picked me anyway:( but it would have made a great way to pass the time till mine started! ;) Anyway... I totally understand about the pics, some people would have nightmares forever over graphic things like that... And you just have to be forthcoming about it, there are PLENTY of cases that don't have them. |

Being on a jury would be neat, but it is really difficult for a student balancing loans, trying to graduate on time, paying the rent, etc. etc. Do you guys get jury pay down south? In BC, we don't (except maybe a $20 or so per diem)--your employers are expected but not required to pay you for jury duty. As much as I would love to be on a jury (having studied forensics, legal-social issues etc.) I wouldn't have been able to do so and survive while living on my own. As important as it is and as much of a duty and a priviledge as it is, I can understand why people try to get out of it sometimes... Best of luck mizwanned, keep us posted :) D- |

what ever happened? Did you go down there? The policy of my employer is to give us regular pay and we turn over whatever the state pays us. I would be honored to serve on a jury. I was the victim of a sex crime, so they always pass over me. But I wish you luck. The new semester does not start for a while, so maybe you can go down and they will excuse you? |

I understand how difficult it would be. When I was a single mother, I returned to school. If I had been called then it would've been a hardship for me, too. |

I did 3 days on an auto accident trial where some lady was trying to get money from a poor, elderly farmer for being at the wrong place at the wrong time and she hit him. It was so boring the judge fell asleep! Absoutely true - the balif had to wake him up! We were in the deliberation room for all of 10minutes at the most and the balif told us we had to make it look good so we had to wait 20 more minutes. When the verdict was read, the farmer looked at us and mouthed Thank You with tears running down his face. |
