Please dont make fun of me, But.... How do you make cornbread? Im going to assume it has something to do with corn meal? Possibly milk/heavy cream? Please remember that I am from NY and raised here lol It looks sooooo yummy and homey - and I have had some really BAD and REALLY REALLY good So if anyone can find it in their hearts (after you contain your laughter) to share a recipe - it would be greatly appreciated! :D Ok all you Southerners can begin with the mocking lol |
mix cornmeal with buttermilk, add a egg and bake.....;) |
We love cornbread here, but cornbread recipes vary. Here's my question...what do you like about cornbread? Do you like a crispy crust? Soft bread? Combo of both? Muffins? Slices? Sweet? And...do you have a cast iron skillet that can be put into the oven? I have some great recipes, just let me know what you like, and I'll try to find one for you. :D |
Buy a box of mix. :p |
HAHA!! I was raised in Alabama and I lived there for 2o years..... and I don't even know how to make that. My mother can, but I refuse to try. It looks hard. I think you can get the cornbread mix at the store and just mix it with milk?? or something else. I have no clue how to make it home-made. |
I do have the cast iron skillet..... I like the combination of the crispy and soft.... Ive never had a sweet version...didnt know that was possible? Thanks :) Quote:

Don't feel bad. I was born, raised, and still live here in the south and I do not know how to make cornbread! I can't make biscuits either. LOL |
Is it really that easy....I always thought it was more complicated? Quote:

LoL - I tried that and I added canned corn to it - and ummmm yea it was BAD - dont ask me why I added the corn to it lol Quote:

Here's our favorite recipe, but we add a little sugar sometimes. http://southernfood.about.com/od/cor...r/bl50926b.htm Here's a resource with a lot of other recipes. Just find one you think your family will like and go for it. ;) http://southernfood.about.com/cs/cor...ornbread_2.htm |

I think you just add milk and maybe an egg. |
Thank you! I think I read somewhere that you have to do something special to the skillet? Is that true? Quote:

If I have time, I make it from scratch. If I don't... I use 1 pkg. of Jiffy Cornbread mix and 1pkg. of Jiffy Yellow cake mix. Mix those together, add the ingredients from both boxes and it turns out perfect every single time. |
Ok everyone wish me luck....Tonight is the night! |

That sounds interesting....I guess that would be the sweet version? |
If you like the crispy crust and soft middle then the first recipe I posted is the way to go. What are you serving with it? That will help you decide if you want to add sugar to it. |

And yes, Kelsey, I am serious! I don't have the first clue about making cornbread. I don't like it so I never bothered learning how to make it. I LIKE biscuits though, I just can never get them to stick together. |

You could go either way, but I would add a little sugar, not much, just a little...probably about a quarter cup. It depends upon what you like. Have fun!! |
The key is to use buttermilk...not just regular milk. |
Im keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks...I think I am going to go with the first recipe |
Good luck with your cornbread! Your menu sounds YUMMY! When I make cornbread from scratch I mix together: 1 1/2 cup s/r white cornmeal 1/2 cup s/r flour 1 egg 1 tablespoon vegie oil and enough buttermilk to make a "thick batter" I always grease and flour my cast iron skillet -- it isn't necessary if the skillet is well seasoned, but I do it anyway. Preheat oven to 450 and mix all ingredients just enough to remove lumps bake until golden brown on top. |
