The Golden Compass Has anyone been to see this movie yet? I thought that it looked decent and had considered going to see it, but someone sent me some info regarding story and now I'm not so sure I want to support it. :( Apparently the books on which the movie was based were a triology written by an aethiest author and the whole underlying theme and motiviation is to kill God and live in anarchy? http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.asp Never heard of the books or story until this so I'm just wondering if anyone has seen it and if this does seem to be what it's all about? |
I've been told by several people whove seen it that while there is an athiest undertone, its not as huge as everyone makes it out to be. They've said that you really can't tell at all unless you've known about it before hand. |
never heard/read the book, but it looks like a good movie.. i don't know about that whole aetheist thing... but it sure looks like a really good movie and hubby really wants to watch it.. i mean it is just a movie right ;) |
No it didn't look all that great to me... |

No I think we are going to pass on this movie. ;) |
I think whoever wrote that is off their rocks. I never saw 'Narnia' as some religious trip. It's just a good movie. I think 'Golden Compass' will be the same. Sometimes, you just don't need to read so deeply into these things. :) Or atleast that's how I feel. |

I have no clue, this is the first I'm hearing of it. All I know of the story is what I've seen in previews for the movie, which I considered going to see. But if the underlying theme is for God to be killed so that everyone can live in Anarchy, I don't want to go see that!:( S'why I was trying to get opinions from people who have seen it and can tell me about it.:) |
I really have no desire to see it anyway, so I can't really tell you what its about. :) But apperantly its very hard to explain the plot. |

Inside Edition did a peice on it over the weekend all about the athesit things and it being anti- God. My grandchildren never saw any of the Harry Potter movies because of the heavy witchraft undertones, wizards and the like and won't see this one either. Their little minds are too fresh and pure to fill with some of the stuff in movies today and as parents and grandparents, it is our job to protect them. That's all I can say without turning it into a religious discussion. |
My opinion - It is just a movie/book! I get so tired of everyone freaking out about a FICTIONAL story and trying to make it out to be something real and dangerous  |

(Not that you said/though that, Misty. I'm just making a general statement as it's what a lot of people who oppose the movie think.) I'd like to see it! |
i'm going to read the books and watch the movie just to see what all the hubbub is. if no one had made a big deal of this i probably wouldn't be interested. i watched and read all the narnia and harry potter bookes/movies too. I did see the religious undertones in narnia but saw nothing political or whatever in Harry Potter. Its just a great fictional series. |
When the Davinci code came out, everyone freaked out about that too. I can't tell you how many churches had series of sermons over why the Davinci code was not true. Okay...it's fictional...possibly even a theory...but no one ever said it was real so why were there sermons about it? I watched the movie and thought it was very interesting, thought it was a great story, and like I said maybe a theory to consider but it obviously was not true. Things like that are what I do not understand...why make such a big deal about fiction? |
The author of the Golden Compass has admitted that he hates CS Lewis (a Christian) so he wrote a series of children's books that would compare to Narnia but at the end of the 3 book trilogy, the children in the book kill God. The movie is trying to generate interest in the books so people will go out and read the books, which are more explicit in the athiest view than the movie. |
The interview I saw with the author he says, and I quote "I hope to Kill God in the hearts of children". Anyone who can say that in any context will never have their book read or movie watched by my children. I am proud to say I am a Christian but I am not closed minded. This movie though opens questions my children don't need to be asking right now. As an adult you can do what you want and expose yorself to what you want but as a parent it is my job to try and limit what my children see. We each need to make our own choices. |
Before i didn't wanna see it but now i do:) |

I first read The Golden Compass about 10 years ago. It took years for the second and third to come out. Not having heard about the author's opinions on religion beforehand, I never even really noticed those atheist views within the books! All I can say that in terms of a fictional novel, they were really great entertaining storys! Having heard about the controversy, all I can recommend is for you all to treat it as a story/movie to enjoy. Don't look that deeply into it! Enjoy it like you'd enjoy lord of the rings, harry potter, chronicles of narnia, etc! Peggy |
My husband and i were planning to take the kids. I told my husband about this thread as i hadn't heard this before, and he said so? everybody is entitled to their opinion, why does he have to believe in god to make a good movie, and shrugged me off. LOL |

Like someone mentioned, it may not be obvious in the movie that my kid would even catch it....THAT was all I wanted to know and what I was trying to determine. |
Well i think if you decide to go watch it and see something that makes you uncomfortable, it is the perfect opportunity to have a discussion with your daughter, reinforcing your beliefs as a family and still letting her know that there are other viewpoints in the world. Frankly i feel we have much worse things that our children are watching already. Have you seen Grim adventures of billy and mandy? This cartoon has down right disgusted me on a more than one occasion. |

Everyone has their opinions about this movie and it is up to the individuals as to whether they will take their children to see it. If you want to go see the movie or take your children to see the movie this is up to you!!!! I for one have a hard enough time explaining everyday events to my son whether he has seen something on TV, heard something at school, seen something on a video game, etc.....HE WORRIES ABOUT EVERYTHING!!!! So with that being said, I do not plan to take him to see this movie. Perhaps one day I will feel differently but for right now the last thing I want is my son to worry about someone trying to kill God. (this would really upset him!!!) I am not giving anyone a hard time that wants to go see the movie so, please don't give me a hard time that I do not want my child to see it. It's each individuals choice!!! |
Pg-13 I'm sorry i take it all back! I did not realize this movie was rated PG-13! I assumed this was a children's movie and would be age appropriate with the issues, obviously with a rating like that, this is not a movie that will be geared towards children. Hubby and i will have to see it alone before we let the kiddies see it. |
Well, our elementary school library carries the books so I've checked out book #1. It is a series of 3 books and the undertones progress with each book and they say the 3rd book is the worst...sooooo...we shall see! |
This is kind of....not even on topic. but...I was just thinking about it. I have a friend who is athiest. and it doesn't really make sense to me that this guy would want to kill God, because athiests believe that there IS no God, not that the God is bad. So....IDK! |

Kimberley...let me know what you think when you get done. I assumed it was for kids too...didn't know it was PG-13. |
