Can't decide if I should feel guilty So we went to the little local cafe this morning. This is the place where everyone in town goes to get all the gossip, etc. So I overhear these two women talking about a "lady with that yorkie". So I perked up my ears and listened a little more closely and realized they were talking about ME! They were talking about the way I always dress Susanah, and take her everywhere with me, etc. Well then they were leaving and they had to pass right by our table and when they did one of them said to the other one, "Yeah, it must be nice to have enough money to dress up a damn dog when there are people who can't even afford to buy clothes for their kids!" It isn't MY fault if they can't afford to buy clothes for their kids. They were both pulling out their cigarettes as they were walking out. Maybe they should stop smoking. For the price they paid for a carton of their cigarettes they could have bought an outfit for their kids. I see one of the ladies going into the liquor store all the time. Quit spending money there and buy clothes for your kids. My DH and I do NOT have a lot of money. In fact this has been the worst year financially for us. Yes I buy clothes for Susanah, but I also pay my bills and make sure my kids have what they need. It isn't my fault they put other things ahead of their children. I really don't like this town. :( |
Do Not Feel Guilty! I wish I had been there. I would have punched you in the side and said -- Yes, it IS nice. And if you would apply your ciggy $$ to buying your kids clothes then you would probably be able to dress your kids nice too. |
OMG I would have told them to mind their own business. |

I'm with you on that. I make most of Pennys clothes so they only cost me a little money on them, but my kids always come fist. |
I think the fact that they were smoking cigarettes gives them absolutely NO right to complain about how someone else chooses to spend THEIR money! I bet the cigarettes is just the beginning too. How much do you want to bet they waste money on other "unimportant" things as well? Perhaps they should sell all of that and donate their money to charity if they are so concerned...   |
I wish I'd said SOMETHING. Instead I just looked at my MIL (who I have been actually getting along with lately - how scary is THAT?!) like I couldn't believe they just said that. She said, "Aww they are just jealous don't listen to those trailor park hussies!" (which I don't think was a very nice thing for HER to say either) I mean, it DOES make me feel bad that there are children who have nothing. It really does. I ALWAYS donate something to Toys for Tots, and we always get at least one name off the Angel tree to buy for. It just makes me mad when people just assume things. |
I think you did the right thing by not saying anything, you do not need to justify why you buy your dog clothes. Your money...your business. I can understand how you are upset and I would be too but you were the bigger person when you said nothing. let them talk...they have nothing better to do than to make you topic of their conversation...feel honored ;) |
Oh my gosh! Thats horrible! How can people be so rude? And to your face. Ugh! Since I'm in Mississippi anytime anyone is rude to me, I just say "Welcome to the hospitality state! You must be new." They usually just huff off like I have insulted them. This one man said "I've lived here all my life." And I was like "Oh really?!?!?! That is such a surprise because I CERTAINLY couldn't tell from your attitude." My mom taught me to kill 'em with kindness so thats always what I TRY to do. Regardless, I am so sorry that you experienced their bad behavior. Everyone here knows that you are such a sweetheart and that your baby is super special. They're probably just jealous. |
People who have to worry about how others spend their money have bigger problems than money. If you weren't dressing your dog they'd find something else to be critical of. I think you were smart to ignore them. They didn't deserve a reaction from you.:) |

I agree with Nikki - they DO NOT deserve your attention at ALL. I am in the same boat you are too this year, my hubby and I are strapped like never before for cash this year and I still am a nut for buying my babies clothes and things. My hubby is a builder and it is so slow here now. I think what we do with out kids, animals, finances, etc.... is a personal preference and if you do not have anything nice to say you should not say anything at all. |
Wow, where do you live? I'm sorry that happened to you. It's no fun to be the topic of an icky conversation! You should take pride in the fact that you can dress your yorkie if you want to, they on the other hand, should be ashamed of such tacky behavior but white trash seldom is. The little devil on my shoulder says to have a shirt made for your pup that says suck it and then next time you see them ask if they like it! The angel on my other shoulder says be a good girl and turn the other cheek. Hope you don't mind me giving my.02 and have a great thursday! |
