What a great video. Piper does this occasionally. It sounds like a honking noise to me also. I wonder how many different vets would have a different opinion without an x-ray?

This thread had been very interesting, as this is exactly what we have taken Romeo to the vet for just last week. He has had the "reverse sneezing" since he was about 1, however, it has been getting progressively worse until I have become very concerned that he is unable to breathe. I never heard of CT until my vet mentioned it a week ago, and now reading on this site - I am nervous for Romeo. It is to the point where he will do this for up to 10 - 15 minutes at a time, and jsut walks around the house like he can't breathe. He has been gaining weight because we can't walk him anymore - the entire walk he just continues to "honk". The only thing we have found to sooth him is to cover his eyes and point his head up. The vet took an x-ray and said his heart looked slightly enlarged, but perhaps not abnormally so. (Has anyone heard of this before?) She also said it appeared on the x-ray that he had fluid in his lungs and so put him on a diuretic. She told us not to be concerned. Now I am thinking I should be? And maybe if someone could send me a personal email or something to amysrivera@yahoo.com - I am brand new to this site and not sure I will be able how to find my way back to this particular thread....

Hi, and first of all welcome to yorkietalk!!! How old is Romeo and how much does he weigh? This would concern me deeply...sorry to say...but that is what my vet told me too, about my Spencer, may he RIP...of course he was older, I think about 11 years old, by the time they had to give diuretics for fluid, it not only built up in his lungs...but his little abdomen too...he was a large yorkie about 13 pounds before we had to start feeding him prescription diet food, but that was a few years earlier and he did get down to about 10 pounds, better but still overweight. He unfortunately did not respond to the diuretic very well, got sicker and weaker every day. So please get other vet opinions, don't ignore these symptoms...it can be devastating. I only wish I had listened to my inner voice that was telling me he's not JUST OLD. I put too much faith in my vet, didn't get other opinions and have regretted this decision now for 3 long years, and it's so very hard to live with. For Romeo's sake, and your conscience...find out what is causing this...maybe you won't have the unfortunate same consequence.

We have a 3 year old, five pound Yorkie-Maltese and he does this all the time when he is pleasantly excited - (1) when he is winded after running long sprints up and down the hall after a bath, say, and (2) if any women come over who he particularly likes (he's a real ladies' man) he will go running hither and thither all over the place, showing off, and then it will start for a minute or two.

Thanks for your responses - Romeo has gone from doing this when he is excited to now just laying on the couch and having it come on all of a sudden. He also cannot breathe well while laying on his side. After reading this I will be calling the vet Tuesday - he has seemed to do better on the diuretics but I am going to trust my gut instinct and request to see another vet in the office for a 2nd opinion.

The enlarged heart could be because he is not getting enough air..I have heard that CT can does this

I really do wish your little Romeo well, maybe he has some type of infection or something in his lungs, I really do hope it's nothing serious...But it is best to be sure, so I'm glad your getting another opinion. Missy's reverse sneezing sounds much more different..

when she gets extremely excited and happy.... it sounds like she is trying to breathe, so basically sounds like she is choking and trying to gasp for some air ...so her neck part and head come forward and its pretty lengthy.... i dunno it's pretty weird. I wish I can video tape it.... but she hasn't done it in a WHILE now. When she does it for a long time, i usually open her mouth so she can breathe from there... or plug her nose so she can open her mouth to breathe.

in my opinion is reverse snieazing....My Duffy had same thing happen to him when hi was 7 months old but it was worst...I took him to er office and they told me it was reverse sn. he still has it and most of the time when he get exited...

Well, I just took Romeo back to the vet today, to see someone different (my favorite vet - they have 5 in the office). He said that he thinks Romeo may definitely have CT, but because of the severity and the difficulties he is having, he is considering recommending us to go to Michigan State. He said the diagnostic tests that Romeo needs are so exacting and precise that he does not feel comfortable doing them (or having another vet do them). He said that if another vet doesn't do it correctly, they could severely injure Romeo's trachea.

Before we do that though, Romeo is going in next Tuesday to be put under sedation so that he can be sure he doesn't have any polyps or growths in his nasal passage or throat area that would be preventing Romeo from breathing. He said that the enlarged heart, etc. is because Romeo is working so hard to breathe. So, if you would please keep Romeo in your thoughts and prayers - I am not sure what we need to do for him at this point but he was given a mild sedative for the weekend so that he can relax and not be so anxious....

Ah, I hope Romeo can get some much needed rest this weekend, and that the test he has next week will come out good, don't know if them finding a growth or polyp is good news or not, if they are benign and can be removed it may help his breathing. We will be praying for good reports and an answer to make Romeo feel better soon. In our thoughts also. Hugs!!!

That is EXACTLY how Bo sounds like... I was really afraid it might be CT... but after seeing this video, I'm inclined to think it's reverse sneezing. I'll have to check next time she does it if she keeps her mouth closed. Then, I'll probably know for sure.

It happens now and again (maybe once a month or so), sometimes, when she gets excited (but not every time) or even if she's very thirsty and drinks too fast. Then again, she might be doing absolutely nothing and it just starts. It's always fast honking and never lasts more than 10 to 15 seconds.

And when it's over, she looks perfectly okay...

I agree: it's a lot scarier to us that to the dog... ;)

thank you so much! I have saved that as a favorite and will show my vet. I think that is why he is referring us to Michigan State, because of the required degree above and beyond vetinary. I will show my husband as he is nervous about taking Romeo away for treatment..

My 2 yorkies reserve sneeze and it doesn't sound anything like that. It's a constant like wheezing sound. Can't your vet check him/her out and find out if it's a trachea?

Well, Romeo seems to be doing much better. Our vet did exploratory surgery and found that his tonsils were quite enlarged, possibly due to an infection from his back teeth. Apparently he had a cracked tooth from chewing on rawhides, which then caused an infection. He had two teeth removed, and is on antibiotics. He still has a scratchy throat, but last night was the first night he was went on in months where he could actually breath! The vet said he had never seen anything like that before, but that it probably isn't that uncommon, and that he will watch for this more from now on because it sounds so similar to a reverse sneeze or trachea, that most people probably don't get it checked out. Hopefully Romeo will continue to improve and be back to normal!!!

dd has the reverse sneeze when she gets excited when we come home. It was worse when she was on pred for allergies and she gained weight- now that her weight is down not so bad and more during allergy season. Vet heard her once and said oh she has a reverse sneeze.

to calm her i talk softly saying it is ok, put her in front of a floor fan and massage her neck and goes away quickly

i was so worried about her noise which was probably due to allergies i had her trachea xrayed when i spayed her and she was fine so may be something when you get yours fixed to do just to rule it out as it is so common in yorkies

This is exactly what I do for Gin-Gin...Calms her every time..
