I read about a miniature schnauzer kennel that has 29 dogs all raised indoor as pets and in order to keep up with the constant demand of them needing to go out to go potty they too have a ring the bell system. I was considering it but not entirely sure until I saw your video! I'm getting a bell now...you have any recommendations on how to train to get dogs to ring the bell or a little story on what you did to get your cutie to do it?
In case you are curious here's the site for the schnauzer kennel I was talking about Miniature Toy Teacup Schnauzers |
Hi There,
Bailey is your normal everyday Yorkie. The lighting in my video isn't the greatest, so it makes him look all black and he has a sweater on.
This was my first attempt to train any of my dogs to ring a bell. It started with teaching him to go to the back door when he wants to go " pee, or poo poo" I know thats sounds funny, but I would say that a million times, so he knew what it means. Eventually, he started leading me to the back door when he wanted out, so I let him out to do his thing and serve him a treat on his way in. Once I knew he was comfortable with leading me to the door I added an extra step by letting him lead me there, but lift his paw and make him ring the bell before I let him out. As soon as the bells made noise I would open the door and let him out. After a few weeks came test day. He led me to the door and sat there staring at me. I waiting to see what he would do. He knows that if he pees, or poohs inside major trouble comes his way, so out of desperation he rang the bell with his nose (the first time), so I let him out right away. Following that day he started to pick up on the connection between bell noises and outside until one day he gave it a swat with his hands and I let him out with a TON of praise. Now he does it all the time. Even when he just wants to go out and patrol the backyard...he rings the bell.
Hope that helps. |
