Thank you for all the nice comments. We are very proud of Bailey. How we taught him? We'll first we house broke him by using the kennel method. Once we knew he was comfortable with going to the door, so we can let him out we starting adding an extra step by raising his paw, saying the words "ring the bell" and touching the bells. Eventually Bailey picked up that ringing the bells means he can go outside, so one day I just heard the bells and let him out (with TONS of praise) Now he does it all the time on his own. He knows what it means and will do it anytime you tell him to. Awesome little guy. |
Aw c'mon Bailey, you can do better than that! Smack that sucker! Let 'em know you mean business! Frisco |
He is so cute! Good boy Bailey! :) |
What a little smartie and so precious too. Have a Great day! |
that is a smart idea! :) |
That is so awesome & he is so little. How did you ever teach him to do that Mine would probably just try to pull the bell down & play with it. |
How? I'd love to know how you trained your yorkie to ring the bells. I have a bell on every door and ring it/them as we are going out each time. So far, our yorkie, Lucy hasn't figured it out. She is 8 months old, but we've only had her for 2 months. Any advice? |
Beginner Bell Ringer! I have also been training Murphy to "ring the bell" and he has started to pick up on it recently which is I It does make me laugh though, he also uses it when he is hungry and wants the cheerio he gets as a treat when he comes in from being outside to potty. Sneaker!! :D |
Bailey, you are toooo Cute!!!:D Way to go!! |
LOVE IT!!!!! :bravo: |
Nice job! Mine are afraid of the bell! |
That is so cool!! I get my furbaby in 5 more weeks. I only dream of having him do that!! |
Great job Bailey!!! :thumbup::thumbup: |

You need to first make her take you to the door. Once she knows the door is where she's let out for potty; then you start with letting her take you to the door and lifting her paw, hitting the bells and then let her out, so that she knows ringing the bell lets her out. Hope that helps. |
how cute is that! how did you teach him that? |
I have 6 Yorkie's not one of them "ring the Bell" Maybe I need to put it on a different door. LOL |

Hehehe. I was soo determined to make him ring those bells. Even if it was the last thing I do, because I hate cleaning up mistakes and thought it would be a good challenge. I was surprised it only took me 3weeks to get it done! |
Bailey Is Bali a black Yorkie, I've never seen a black Yorkie before...or was it just the lighting? Either way he is just adorable. I read about a miniature schnauzer kennel that has 29 dogs all raised indoor as pets and in order to keep up with the constant demand of them needing to go out to go potty they too have a ring the bell system. I was considering it but not entirely sure until I saw your video! I'm getting a bell now...you have any recommendations on how to train to get dogs to ring the bell or a little story on what you did to get your cutie to do it? In case you are curious here's the site for the schnauzer kennel I was talking about Miniature Toy Teacup Schnauzers |

Hi There, Bailey is your normal everyday Yorkie. The lighting in my video isn't the greatest, so it makes him look all black and he has a sweater on. This was my first attempt to train any of my dogs to ring a bell. It started with teaching him to go to the back door when he wants to go " pee, or poo poo" I know thats sounds funny, but I would say that a million times, so he knew what it means. Eventually, he started leading me to the back door when he wanted out, so I let him out to do his thing and serve him a treat on his way in. Once I knew he was comfortable with leading me to the door I added an extra step by letting him lead me there, but lift his paw and make him ring the bell before I let him out. As soon as the bells made noise I would open the door and let him out. After a few weeks came test day. He led me to the door and sat there staring at me. I waiting to see what he would do. He knows that if he pees, or poohs inside major trouble comes his way, so out of desperation he rang the bell with his nose (the first time), so I let him out right away. Following that day he started to pick up on the connection between bell noises and outside until one day he gave it a swat with his hands and I let him out with a TON of praise. Now he does it all the time. Even when he just wants to go out and patrol the backyard...he rings the bell. Hope that helps. |
Good job Bailey!!!!! :) |
