Nita I finally have some proper pictures of Nita, but there are so many that I canīt pick so Iīm going to put a link to them: Holidaypics . She has grown so much lately and so has her temper ;) The pictures are taken at a holiday we took in the country for 2 weeks and she and Otto loved it :) We had a little scare yesterday (well according to my bf I was not just a little bit scared, I was histerical) I took the pups out to pick my bf up from work at midnight and an hour later both the dogs were shaking non-stop, Nita threw up and just wanted to sleep, Otto couldn't move and just laid in my arms all night, at 8 I called the vet and she came straight away, apparantly they must have eaten something poisonous, she guessed pesticide, later in the day 2 other dogs were brought in with the same symptoms, Nita was ok in the morning, Iīm guessing because she threw up in the evening but Otto is still recovering and has had 3 jabs and 4 pills today, he is not liking it, but is getting stronger every minute, Iīm just so shaken now, I canīt belive that it is not safe for me to take my dogs out for a walk without worrying about something poisonous being left on the street  I am not letting them out of my sight from now on. We are looking for a house in the country and I am hoping that we will find something soon, I donīt want to go through this again. |
I do hope that your babies are ok very soon - this is a real worry in Spain so I've been told? We have a villa in Spain near Alicante and I've been warned about people putting poison down too? Many muzzle their dogs on a walk apparently so that they can not pick up anything and eat it but how sad to have to do this! We will be living in Spain maybe as soon as next year and I am concerned about this problem. Do let us know how your babies are! You must be so worried. Big hugs to them from our two, Gypsy Rose and Gizzie Chavi!! |
Good thing they are fine now! Yes, be careful they don't eat grass, lick anything on the ground (especially car anti-freeze, I believe it TASTES sweet which is why dogs LIKE it), or eat anything when they are outside! We gotta be so careful since our Yorkies are little, and they get affected by little things a lot more than a big dog would. |
Glad the little ones are OK!! I recently had a scare like that ... Toto ate a cigarette!! I never dreamed that tobacco is toxic to these tiny ones, but it is! She is fine now but it certainly gave me real incentive to quit smoking and to remove my ashtray from my desk where she apparently climbed up and got it!! |
I didn't know that tobacco is toxic to Yorkies, bettyeanne! Glad Yoda doesn't like smoke or cigarette butts, but for anyone that takes their Yorkies for walks outside, be careful they don't eat one up!!! |
Thank you all. Just to let you all know that theyīre both fine now :) back to their old selves, right now Otto is chasing Nita around cause she stole his stuffie away from him ;) :D It is a real problem here, but I thought that it was only in the country-side, I didnīt know that it could happen in the village, I knew that the hunters leave poisonous meat so that pets or other things dont scare away their preys, I know about people who have lost all their pets due to this, it is very sad when I see the posters from people asking anyone one if they have seen their dogs or their bodies. I donīt know what can be done about it, we are currently looking for a house in the country-side but I will make sure that it will be fenced off. At our holiday the hunters came onto our property chasing the preys and all we could do was to scream as loud as possible to scare the preys off, it is really scary but my in-laws donīt have a fence so anyone can walk into their property if they want to. |

Symptoms of Nicotine Poisoning in Pets Signs begin as quickly as one hour post-ingestion. Symptoms include: Tremors Auditory and visual hallucinations Excitement Vomiting and diarrhea Twitching possibly progressing to seizures Racing heart rate but slow heart rate with small doses High blood pressure but at higher doses there is a circulatory collapse It is easy to confuse nicotine poisoning with other poisonings such as strychnine, chocolate, organophosphate insecticide, and certain molds. Hopefully, there will be cigarette materials in the vomit to give away the diagnosis. When Nita firts came I caught her playing with a cigarette and she had started to chew the filter, I didnīt know that it was poisonous, but since then I have kept thim in a place where they canīt get to them. |
oh and I found this http://www.gsrne.org/Chocolate.htm ... I didnīt know that chocolate was this poisonous to dogs, we don't eat chocolate here since neither me or my bf like it but itīs good to know these things. |
Thanks for that info, Eyglo! I couldn't remember all that! The way I discovered what had happened with Toto was seeing tobacco in her poop!! I grabbed it up in a paper towel and took it across the street for my daughter-in-law [a nurse] to inspect! We agreed it was indeed tobacco and I called the vet! :) I keep everything away from Toto, but occasionally she manages to get into something! They ARE clever!! :D |
They are to cute. yes you must be careful with them they are to much like our kids for anything to happen to them.Glad they are alright. |
Glad to know about the tobacco. My sister comes over and we sit outside on the patio and she smokes. Not anymore, that is one thing Rudy hasn't got into yet :p Like Toto's mom said they are clever and get into anything and everything............Cindy |
oh my guish ! I was glad i have read these post about the cigarettes being poisionous to dogs. I didn't know that. We smoke here also and Ahia has gotten hold of one before. My husband is not as alert to what she gets into as I am. I came home one day to find a torn up cigarette on the throw rug by the front door. I didn't think too much about it and just cleaned it up. She was never sick or anything, thank goodness. Had I know all this info before that episode I would have freeked out. |
cigarettes, choclate (baking choclate), rasins and grapes, onions and many plants are poisionous to pets, and especially our small yorkies. I have a page with a listing of poisonious plants here http://yorkieviews.com/toxicplants.htm and a page that lists a lot of other health hazards here http://yorkieviews.com/dangers.htm there are so many things that we take for granted that can be fatal to our pets. |
Gee I'm glad we have MMYorkies here! Thank you again for your wonderful website! It's a great resource for all of us. |
THANKS, mmyorkies!! I didn't know about rasins and grapes!! |
Wow grapes and raisins? We've fed Yoda grapes before! Wuh woh! Not excessive amounts ever, but still... :( |
Was going to say grapes and raisins. Thanks mmyorkies I'm glad youi listed these things sometimes we don't even think a thing about things like this but it can kill our babies. |
Raisins and grapes are rather new on the list of pet no,no's. Wasn't too long ago that a little yorkie died from eating a box of raisins, so now raisins and grapes are among the banned items for pets. I had a lab that loved grapes and used to lay under our grape vines and eat the grapes off if it, but she was much bigger than my yorkies, and she never had any problem, but I won't tak the chance with my little ones now. |
Thanks for the update on the raisins and grapes. Anything we can do to avoid harm! |
