Ringing the bell I read about teaching your dog to ring a bell to go outside on here. So I thought I would try it because the only time Sophie has an accident is when were in a different part of the house and don't see her sitting by the door. All I had was a Christmas bell but it worked. I hung it on the door and at first it was curiosity but everytime she made it ring we would make a big deal and let her outside. Now she is doing it for the right reason. I am so proud of her. I can't remember who posted about it but THANKS whoever you are. You have made things easier for us. :aimeeyork Sophie'smom Tanya |
That's so great! I need to try that too! Thanks for the inspiration and the good news! |
That is great! They are just so smart! The christmas bell is what I hung.I can hear it anywhere in the house. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15 Phyllis |
Sophie's Mom, I have a few questions. Did you hang the bell from the doorhandle? how old is Sophie? Kodah is 18 weeks old - goes outside (ALWAYS) when the door is left open, but unless I notice her at the backdoor she will potty just by the backdoor (she hasn't discovered she can bark yet!). Stormy (13 weeks old) is now starting to go outside by herself after two weeks of taking her. But I can't leave the door open when the AC has to stay on all day!! I was wondering if it's too late for them to get the hang of ringing the bell, because I am constantly checking to see if anyone is at the backdoor (when it's not cracked open). Are you using the bell on the end of a string?? |
On a similar note, has anyone had any luck with that dog doorbell thing? It sits on the floor and they have to touch it with their paw to make the doorbell thing (a monitor you sit on the counter or somewhere) ring. I'm trying to teach Tatum that one. It's only been a couple days but what we've done is when we tell her to go out to go potty, we put her foot on the pad and after it rings, we make a big deal out of it and give her a treat and then take her right out. Isn't that right? Anybody try that product yet? |
Sorry it took so long to reply. My Sophie was 6mths when I started with the bell. She was already sitting by the door to go out. You could hang a bell on ribbon or anything. Just hang it low enough so they can nudge it with there nose or paw. You can even take their nose or paw and show them how to ring it and then take them outside. Always make a big deal. I still make a fuss over Sophie and she has been doing it for a while. Just be patient she will get the hang of it. Oh and yes I just hung it on the door knob. Good luck! :aimeeyork |
