Need help for my new puppy Sparky Hello, everyone. I just registered in YorkieTalk. It's very nice to meet all of you. I bought my puppy - Sparky almost for a month. He will be 3 month old tomorrow. Sparky is very intelligent puppy. He already learned a lot from us, such as "sit" "fetch" and he knows to pee on the puppy pad. We love him so much. However, there's one thing that bothers us a lot - Chewing problem. He is chewing everthing, even though we bought different bones and toys for him,he's still like to chew and eat everything. We have tried different solutions, such as put Lemon juice on whereever he likes to chew, but it just last 30 minutes. He also likes to bite us, and scrach us with his sharp nails. I know that he tries to play with us, and he doesn't know it's very painful. However, I am a little bit scared of him as there are scraches full of my arms, hands , legs, even my face . Do you guys have any good solutions for this problem. Thanks millions in advance. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk, Sparky! You can also try some "Bitter Apple" spray. Or, use a spray bottle with water, and "spray" him when he's bites and give him a stern "NO!". Another tactic to use is pennies in a tin jar. Shake the jar with the pennies in them vigorously when he bites. Usually they hate that sound. He is probably teething right now, and he has a need to bite and gnaw. There are also some treats you can use for his teeth, such as Greenies or Nylabones. Good luck! :) |
Romie does the same thing. The vet told us to file his nails so that his nails will not be so long and won't hurt as much. |
Good ideas, thanks! Thank you so much for these great ideas. I will try them tonight, and will let you know how they work. Thanks again. Sparky |
Is puppy pad only for Pee? Does everyone know if puppy pad is only for pee but not poo? My puppy sparky has been doing very well peeing on the pad. However, he poos on the carpet but not puppy pad. Even though I have tried to put him on the pad when he wants to poo; or after he pooed on the carpet, I told him, "bad poo" then put his poo on the pad and let him to sniff it. He still poos on the carpet. Does anybody have good ideas about this? Thanks a lot! Sparky |
I AM THERE WITH YOU......Maximus loves to pee on the pad but poo is a different entity, I tried putting 2 pads 1 for poo 1 for pee and it didn't work..but if you notice he will poo in the same spot..so you have to clean that spot with vinegar (get out odor) and then keep a eye on him when he is not in his crate...the minute he starts runnign circles carry him to the pad....Maximus is still "tryibg" to get the hand og it but we are getting there..lol |
Does Sparky have the run of the house? If so, you could consider getting a baby gate, choose a place in the house, could be the bathroom (where he can't get into much trouble), and put him there for say, an hour, then let him out to play for half hour then put him back in. It trains him for alone time and to potty too. Leave some chew toys for him in there so that he knows that he's supposed to only chew those toys and not anything else. The puppy class that I go to suggests that if my puppy has done something wrong, like if you catch him in the act of chewing your table (for eg.), you say something like "uh-oh" and send him to his crate/baby gate space for a time out, say, 15 seconds and then let him out. The next time he does something naughty, you keep him for say 30 seconds and you increase the time every time he does something naughty. The important thing is that you catch him as he's doing something naughty and not after. After a while he should get that what he was doing is not right and he will be given a time out for that and puppies hate it coz they would rather play with you. It's not much fun being alone, is it? :) |
Thanks Clioe Thanks Clioe. Yes, I have tried to put him in his crate when he did something wrong (i.e. chewing table, biting my feet and so on). Then he hates crate so much. sometimes, I try to train him to have a nap in his crate, he cries and run away from the crate. I did some research from website, it said that we should not use crate to punish puppies. That's why I stoped using this way. But I am very frustrated about his chewing behaviour and I can not do anything about it. When I say "NO" during his chewing, he doesn't listen at all. However, I am gonna to try to say"oh.oh" instead tonight, see if it works. Thanks again. |
I love that name Sparky,my babys name is also Sparky but I wont get him unitl June 4th!!! |

It works! 1 Attachment(s) I have tried this method, and it works. However, it lasts 2-3 mintues, then he will do the same thing again. I assume that I should be more patient to practice this method. Thanks a lot for the valuable tips! Quote:

Sparky looks like an angel to me. What a cute face, just love his expression. Mom's not telling the truth, right Sparky? |
He is a doll..... |
Hi, My pup is 5 months old now and from the moment I brought her home I have not let her bite us. When she is playing and she bites I sternly say "NO bite!" and move my hand. She catches on and stops eventually. It is very important that you don't send mixed messages. I know in the past I would play with puppies and they would bite and I thought it was o.k. because we were just playing, but the thing is the puppy doesn't know that sometimes it is o.k. and sometimes it is not. So, what I decided to do was to never make it o.k. to bite. She does really well, but always tries to see if she is now allowed to or not. ;) I like the idea of the spray bottle. That seems to work really well. Good luck! Oh, my Sophia also does the same thing with the puppy pad. She will usually pee on it but does her poo in other places....mostly around the dining room table...yuck!!! The way I figure it is that Yorkies are just not good at house training and it is going to take a long time and maybe she is going to have to be much older before she really gets it. Lots of patience is needed I guess. |
