Yorkies with allergies Hi -- I'm new to "yorkietalk" -- and am very happy to find/meet other Yorkie lovers -- I am just crazy about my little girl (Yorkie) and it's hard for non-Yorkie people to understand! Zadi has an allergy problem -- she was scratching much more than is normal for a little dog -- and she does not have fleas/ticks/mites, etc. -- so she had allergy tests and she came out positive for "fungal/mold allergens" -- I'm bathing her twice a week with a special medicated shampoo (from the veterinarian) that I have to leave on for 10 minutes and then rinse her well -- and then I apply a little of a leave-in medicated conditioner (also from the veterinarian) and I use luke-warm water (I was told hot was not good) and then towel/comb her dry (no hairdryer -- I was told that was not good for itchy skin) -- and while she is better -- she still scratches more than I think she should -- she does not scratch at night -- she is a good sleeper and sleeps straight through the night -- and does not scratch when she is riding in the car or if someone is playing with her -- Does anyone have any suggestions?? She is (of course) an indoor dog -- the house is air-conditioned 24 hours a day/7 days a week -- I've had the air-conditioning ducts cleaned by a place that specializes in allergies -- she takes canine multiple vitamins and omega 3 oils -- eats home-made food (hormone free chicken, steak, eggs, cottage cheese, vegetables, etc. -- and she didn't test positive for food allergies anyway) -- all the bedding she sleeps on (hers and mine) is washed at least twice a week -- and her t-shirts are changed every day (she wears thin cotton knit t-shirts that aside from looking cute --and she likes to wear-- keep her from irritating her skin with her nails) |
sorry I don't have any suggestions, but I would still like to say welcome and your baby sounds adorable. I would love to see pics of her.... |
I suggest you talk to your vet. Our yorkie/chihuahua mix had skin allergies so bad that he would scratch himself until he bled. Our vet gave him an anti-itch pill. It was also suggested to give him liquid Benadryl (same stuff given to people for hives) when the scratching got really bad. |
