We got our new Yorkie, Buffy! a few Yorkie questions?

Not the best picture - will get a new one later- Will you guys indulge me in a couple of dumb questions?

She is a 1 year old Yorkie, bought from a breeder who is downsizing her operation.

First of all, I wanted to use a harness on her - easier on her little neck/trachea. But difficult when she has a sweater or coat on. How do people do this? Harness over the sweater? Or do people just use a regular collar?

What do people use for flea/tick and heartworm preventives. The one her breeder was using seems to be hard to find in the US. She goes to the vet tomorrow, and I will ask there, but wondering what other people use

Try to get sweaters or vest that have a ring on them, and for flea prevention I use Frontline plus, I am sure others will have some great advise for you....Welcome to YT...and Congratulations on your new baby....:)

Welcome to YT and congratulations on your little girl. I always use a harness, but always carry them when I go somewhere if they are wearing a sweater or coat, so I'm not help with the sweater question.

Right now I'm using Revolution for flea/tick and heartworm prevention on my Yorkies. I use Frontline and Heartgard on my Golden. I use to use the Frontline and Heartgard on my Yorkies, but they got so they didn't want to chew the Hartguard. That is why I switched. They both work very well for my doggies!!:)

perhaps I could sew a little ring of some sort onto the coat we have!

She is adorable! I either sew a solid D-ring onto the coat/sweater, or use a step in harness over the coat/sweater. With the stretchiness of sweaters, I think the step in harness is a bit more secure.

Hi and welcome to YT. For best results on coats, I would purchase something made especially made for your baby that has a "D" ring sewn in. There are many folks here who make great stuff at very reasonable prices. Please always use a harness - never a collar for a leash. Step-in harnesses are easy to get over other clothes. I would only sew a "D" ring onto something if I know the fit is secure enough and you can make sure it won't come loose.

I use Sentinel on Sissy as it is heartworm and flea protection in one tiny pill.

I just use a step in harness over her jacket/sweat/whatever she is wearing. I would only add a d-ring if I knew the fabric was strong enough to hold it. But for us, the harness over it works just fine!

You can either sew a D-ring onto the sweater if the fabric is strong enough, buy a harness that is big enough to go over the sweater, or buy clothing that already has the D-ring attached.

I use Interceptor for heartworm prevention and Frontline Plus for flea/tick prevention.

I also purchased a harness a little larger to go over her sweater and it seems to work fine. I don't like collars on their little necks. Betsy

If you sew another thing I have done is to sew a buttonhole in the coat or sweater large enough to pull the D ring through and hook to the leash. Then they can wear their regular harness with any of their clothes.
