Help!!!
 

Cosmo is now with his runny poop it has blood in it. other than that he is acting fine, running, eating, drinking, chewing up anything.
i have an appt tomorrow at 9 should I take to an emergency vet now. PLEASE HELP i just got him yesterday.

blood in the stool in my opinion would be something to be worried about, and if it's runny. do you mean runny as in Diarrhea?

I know you just got him, where did you get him from?

From a breeder in Oklahoma, It is diarrhea.

I think an emergency visit might play it safe with Cosmo...You can never be too careful.

Dehydration can set in too quickly with these little one's.

Please keep us posted and I hope Cosmo will be ok. :(

How old is he, and how much does he weigh?

I know for small dogs that they get hypoglycemic very fast. Oreo almost died because i didn't know anything about that.

Someone on these forums suggested Kaopeptate (sp?) for the diarrhea, make sure he's drinking a lot of water. if you do have Nutri-Cal give it to him just to be safe. if you don't honey and sugar is ok.

But if it's something more serious than hypoglycemia ( well i mean that's serious too) it could be maybe:

- Giardia
- Parvo
- Coccydia (sp?)

I don't want to scare you or anything, but you might want to look up the symptoms to thopse and see if they match up with your pup. I'm sure everything will be fine! :)

He is almost 9 weeks. and weighs a little over a 1 1/4

Oreo was 8 weeks and about 1.53 pounds. he was found to be very hypoglycemic with a blood glucose of 15 (normal is 90-120)

Check your baby's gums if they are pale give him some nutri-cal or honey right away.

:aimeeyork I think you need to contact the breeder as soon as possible. Bloody diarhea can be a sign of worms or something worst, so you should take Cosmo asap to the vet. I agreed with Yorkie girl. Congrats on your new baby and Good luck. Please keep us posted.

I called the vet I have an appt tomorrow at 8 he said he would be fine until the morning b/c he is active and eating.

Its probably just worms! The same thing happened with Lexy a few weeks ago and scared me to death!!!

it's okay to be scared, shoot i wish i would have found this website when I first got oreo.

I had just got him, and within the next 48 hours he was so lethargic and not with it, i was scared, i actually cried i thought he was going to die.

found out his blood sugar was so low, he was near death and not to mention he had tapeworms and roundworms. :eek:

Is he on the same food that the breeder was feeding him? If he was switched to a different food, that could cause him to have irritated bowels or colitis, which could show blood in the stools. Hope the little cutie is feeling better really soon!

Well yes he is but I put soem science diet in his food because the vet said that is what she is switching too so she gave me both, but he really does not eat the science diet.

Awww. I remember I also read somewhere that bloody, runny poo is signs of worms or something a little more than that. I know I'm no help, but I just wanted to say .. I am sure your lil' babe will be fine! Hope all is well, update us on how the vet appt goes! :p

I took him to the vet tonight. This is weird. He is very active and was playing a whole lot. But he was just squirting out blood. He drinks a lot but the guy said he was dehydrated. i hope everything works out.

I was looking online after we got back from the vet and I found this...the only thing is, Cosmo doesn't have all of the symptoms....hope your doing okay...I am sure he will be fine...Sleep good!!!


What shall I do for my Yorkie's bloody diarrhea and what is HGE?

HEMORRHAGIC GASTRIC ENTERITIS
Hemorrhagic Gastric Enteritis is a serious threat to all dogs, but particularly dangerous to the smaller breeds.
Is it Parvo, Corona, Giardia, or Cambylobacter Enteritis? Any kind of bacterial diarrhea can quickly dehydrate an animal and the tinies are in great peril as they have little weight to lose before they are dehydrated and need IV rehydration.
Your dog can be infected by a walk in the park, or at a dog show, or other congregation of dogs. Anywhere from 2-10 days from exposure, your dog can come down with this problem, starting with vomiting, lethargy, refusing to eat, and progressing to mucous covered stool, loose stools, profuse diarrhea and bloody diarrhea.
Though it is important that your dog is placed on wide spectrum antibiotics, it is important that a culture be done first so that you know exactly what bacteria you are treating. Many cases of Hemorrhagic Gastric Enteritis are treated with a combination of Amoxicillin and Flagyl, but both these drugs will probably be recommended by your veterinarian at the first sign of bloody diarrhea and vomiting. DO NOT waste time, particularly with the smaller breeds, as they have little reserves to lose fluid thru diarrhea, especially bloody diarrhea. My vet has instructed me to go ahead and give the Amoxicillin 50 mg two times a day (toy dogs) and if there is no change in 12 hours to bring the dog in for further evaluation. I have seen severe bloody diarrhea, bright red blood, stopped after administering Amoxicillin as my vet instructed, along with kaopectolin or other anti diarrhea agent from your vet. In a more severe case, he also had me give Flagyl at the same time. Consult your veterinarian for proper dosage by weight of your dog.

The vet said he was dong good, he was drinking and sleeping. The test results will be in around 1 or so. He was not pooped.

It really sounds like coccidia - my Chanel came to us with it and it can be very dangerous for a little one - it's easily treated though but we ended up in emergency with her at 2am on a sunday morning - I just was sooo scared ! Good luck with your puppy !

Hope your baby will be better quickly! Toto recently had a similar bout [but she is 21 months]. We had to see an ER vet in Kentucky and he found that hers was caused from a gastrointestinal infection, which she probably picked up while we were visiting at home. He gave her Flagyl and she bounced back in no time! She was also dehydrated but he trusted us to get pedialite down her ... he said he seriously felt if he put an IV in after 2 blood draws and we had to leave her, she would have a heart attack! I have never seen her so upset. She did great! Keep your chin up and please keep us updated!

Be sure and put some honey in his water and even on his food. Be sure and let us know how he is doing. I get so nervous when on of mine get sick.

Hi! We had a German Shorthaired Pointer that shortly after we got her, she had bloody diarreah and it ended up being hook worms. SHe had to take some medicin for a while, but they were able to clear it right up.

It sounds like it could be a number of things but you did the right thing in getting him to the vet right away. They can usually help him. They are not perfect and I have found that most breeders are better at saving the lives of these little guys than the vet, but since your breeder is not local, you definitely did the right thing.

Had that last year with our female turned out to be parasites, was eating fine feeling good but had runny poop mixed with blood scary thing but turned out to be okay

If it was me, I would RUN not walk to an emergency vet. Cosmo may have Parvo or he could have eaten something that has cut his colon wall. Better safe than sorry. Hurry, go ,go ,go.
