Potty Pads?
 

I was wondering if anybody has used the potty pads and how well they worked? I am not allowed to have Gracie in my apartment any more and I have to have her out by Monday and I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to change over to the potty pads after a month of outside training (where by the way she is pretty much trained) and then move back to outside training so no one would know i had her here still...I can't be without my baby for 3 weeks...!! :(

i have used potty pads for 6 months since the first day i got toto and he is 7 months. I also live in apartment. My landlord still doesn't know. He is fully house trained on the potty pads. There times when he will have his accidents, but nobodys perfect. Just keep the pad with some of her pee on it for a while and then when she has to go she will smell it and hopefully return back to it. thats how toto learned. The same with the poop keep like a smear of it on it and she should return. It sounds nasty but i'm afraid thats the only way to keep from everyone knowing. I'm training my Kiwi (10 weeks old) to go on the pads.I have had her for about 2 weeks now, and she is becoming relatively consistent. The only problem we had was that she kept trying to eat and drag the pad around. We have solved the dragging problem by getting a pad holder (which is basically a frame). As far as trying to eat the pad, every once in a while I catch her trying to shread it. This is my main problem with using the pads. As far as leaving a scent on the pad, that seems to have to opposite effect on Kiwi. She is only willing to go on a completely clean pad. Once there is something on it, that's it! At least it's nice to know that she is concerned about her hygene :).

I'm not sure if going back and forth between outside and inside will be easy, but some poeple are able to train their puppy to do both.

I started Pinkerton with going outside. Now I do not even take him out anymore. He started using his pad after a couple of accidents.. and reinforced him going on the pads with treats. Now I do not even give him treats he knows what to do.. I am sorry about you are having trouble with you place of living .. I am about to move into an apartment if I can find one. and I am not sure if I should find a pet friendly place or not.. just sneak him in.. technically he is my child and probably less messy than some kids..out there..:-)GOOD LUCK pad tranining was easier to me._nathan

I live here in Indianapolis, and when I first got Sophia it was WAYYY too cold to even consider taking her outside. So, we are using pee pads and plan to continue to use them. She is not perfect....the hardest is getting her to go poo on them. But, I'm sure she will learn soon enough. Just get some Spot Shot or some good cleaner and keep it handy. NO ONE has to know!! It's only three weeks. I don't think I'd want to send her away either. I'm sure you will come up with something. Keep us posted. :)

I am outside training my Starsky. He is pretty good with the poopie. I can tell when he has to go. But as far as peeing I can't tell. He just goes while he walks and then stops for 3 seconds and he is on his merry way like he didn't do anything. I take him out several times a day and he will go every time but he stills goes in the house. I know he is only 10 weeks old so I can except his peeing in the house because he is still learning, but how do I train him to either go on the pads or how can It be more noticable when he has to pee? I don't even know he went until I pick him up and his pee pee is wet. So then I search for the spot. We start puppy training classes on May 1st and they said they will cover this in there also. I just am at a lost on what to do next? :confused: Thanks for any advice!!

I have said it before in other threads, but I think it was a great tip, so I'll share it again! My vet had me try moving the potty pads to a more private spot after I complained that Bailey wouldn't always go on the pad. Especially to poop! She said they like privacy, so I moved my pads around and voila! He was 100%!!!

BUT!!! Fair warning... I have a male, and his teeth are coming in behind his baby teeth (common for yorkies), so my vet wants to wait till they're all in so we can nueter and pull teeth at the same time. (anesthetics are risky on tiny dogs, so I've done some research and they say it's better to do it in one shot rather than having them be put under twice!) But, in turn, he's reached his sexual maturity, and has begun to lift his leg in the house! :( So he's going a little bit backwards in our potty training lately! So if you plan to nueter, do it before he starts lifting his leg to pee. I think 5 & 1/2 months is the earliest you can do it though!

Anyone dealt with the leg lifting and have any tips?!?! I'll take any advise I can get on this one! He's also gotten a little territorial lately! Will that subside a bit once he's nuetered? He's a testosterone machine right now!!!

Have you tried the "belly bands"? I use them when I take Hefner to a strange house that he doesn't know because I can't trust him not to make a mistake. The belly band with the snaitary pads has saved me several times now.

Baby uses the puppy pads and they have worked really well. I did have the same experience with needing to put it in a more private place. The bathroom has worked really well for us because the floor is easy to clean if she misses and it's not quite as disturbing for my guests to walk into the bathroom and see pee or poos compared to a living area of the house! Gucci uses the pads 95%, sometimes she poops or pees by my husbands side of the bed(on the foor not the matress). He of course hates this. It doesnt happens often thou. I have 3 pee pads. One behind the TV in the living room, thats where she poops. There is one in the bathroom where she only pees. And there is one by the entranxe door where she does both sometimes. We live in an apt and we have never trained her to go outside. SO far the pads had work for me from the beginning.
