I suggest reading up on each breed and their specific needs. I don't know much about the other two, but Yorkies have very special needs, including possible health problems, that every buyer should take into consideration before buying. I would buy the puppy that you can provide the best care for. Each of the breeds are equally cute (though I'm partial to Yorkies, of course!) IMO. Good luck! |
what made our decision not to get a maltese is there eyes and mouth turn orange from stains. At least with a yorkie it hides a little. |
i've been looking but i can't find a sight..... any suggestions i already went to the AKC one but they don't have there personalitys! |
I went through this same research when we first considered getting a dog. We decided on a yorkie b/c we wanted to teach our dog all sorts of tricks and yorkies are smarter and more teachable (we were told). Plus, my husband always wanted a yorkie, haha. I just love maltese's curly tails, lol. We love our orkie though and would do the same again! One of the best decisions we ever made!!!! |
i have both a yorkie and a shih tzu wow i dont know if i could pick because they both are very loving dogs . my shihtzu is 9 and my yorkie is 15 months old , the only problem i have with a shihtzu is their hair i think it matts real easy my yorkies hair dont i spend more time on my shihtzus hair i keep her hair short .so she dont matt . :) |
humm.... theres a lady down the street and she has a yorkie((reg. sized one) and all she is is skin and bone.. i know there spposed to b skinny but that skinny???? it looks like ... i donno but she looks un healthy maybe?? she seems to be a HAPPY dog though.. is that how there spposed to b??... I'd rather have a cute fat one....... i think i'll end up w/ a maltese....................... ;) |
frankiesmommy gave such great advise. Doing research on any of the breeds you are interested in is the most important thing. The next important is finding the breeder. I find it alarming to only pick a pup due to it's cuteness. It doesn't seem fair to you or the pet. Just when you feel you have researched enough, research some more...It is a never ending process. Good luck! |
I don't know alot about Maltese, but I do know that if you want a yorkie, you need to be prepared to be that babies world because they usualy pick someone they can't live without. :aimeeyork you will need to make sure you have alot of time to spend with him or her. I think it is cruel for any dog to go to a home where they are locked away for all but a few hours in the evening. |
I have two yorkies. When I had one and was deciding to maybe get a maltese as a playmate for him I did some research and talked to several people who owned both and they said the coat on the maltese is much harder to maintain. The yorkie is silkier and easier where the maltese is cottony. The tear stained eyes can be a grooming nightmare as well. I don't know if there is anyone on this site who has both, but if you are out there, please help us out here. I ended up with a second yorkie but I just got an exotic color so they are different! Do a lot of research before you make a decision. There's a couple of maltese forums with lots of info on that breed. |
I'm in the process of acquiring another yorkie as a playmate for Elvis. He is pretty small (3 pounds) and at nearly 11 months, I'm told he is as big as he'll get. His parents were small (dad 2.5 pounds, mom 4 pounds). I ended up going back to my breeder to adopt another baby. I never liked any of the puppies available in my area (Columbus, Ohio). I'm on the breeders waiting list, she doesn't have them often, so it likely won't be until late summer. I mention this only because small ones are hard to find, especially healthy ones. I followed the same research path everyone else mentioned, found many disreputable breeders (good ones too:), and learned a lot about what to expect. Yorkies are really so smart and easy to care for. My relative raises maltese and she can never keep their coats neat (plus they all have the brown stains arounde their eyes :( As long as you brush your yorkie every day, their coat is fine. It doesn't take long to do. If you'd like to see pics, I have a few posted on this site. Keep in mind, if you get a smaller yorkie, you should be mindful of them around children. My breeder told me a sad tale of one of her puppies being adopted and later killed by the roughhousing of a toddler. She no longer sells yorkies to folks with small children. Best of luck on your research :aimeeyork |
Username "luvmypupster" has a maltese and a yorkie I think. You could send a private message and ask for an opinion. |
here is some very basic info: http://www.petsmart.com/ps/guides/as...=1112237117006 http://www.petsmart.com/ps/guides/as...=1112237142478 :) |
Oh, and I have a one-year-old yorkie/shih-tzu mix that I just love (just because you mentioned both ;) )...see her pics in the gallery, her name is Ruby... I got her from a high-school aged girl who foolishly bought a puppy withought considering her own life changes and schedule (school all day, then she got an after-school job)... regardless of what you ultimately choose, be sure to do a lot of research before hand...good luck :animal-sm |
I would choose between a yorkie or the maltese. Actually that was what I did when looking around for another dog. I decided to not get the maltese because of their white coat and how much time you have to put into it to keep it looking nice. I already have a bichon frise and that is also a all white dog...and I'll just tell you that from my experience it is alot of work. She is stained...her paws..a bit around her muzzle and her tear stains are not so pretty. I try to do the best I can but since she does go out when it rains and snows in all kind of weather shes a mess alot. I now have a yorkie and as someone else said if they have any stains I cant see it. Hes the cutest lil boy and I'm glad I got him. He is pretty smart comparin him to my bichon :) Heres a site that you can check on personalities and health etc...Goodluck http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/yorkshireterrier.htm http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/maltese.htm http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/shihtzu.htm And this is what a bichon looks like if you havent seen one http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/bichonfrise.htm |
