can a yorkie and lab get along? Could someone please help me! I've had my yorkie, Daisy, now for 2 years and she weighs 4 lbs. I recently (or should I say my husband) recently added an 8 week old black lab into the family. Everytime I try to get Daisy and Harley close to each other, Daisy just freezes, starts shaking and then starts foaming at the mouth. What can I do about this? Daisy stays inside and Harley is an outside dog, but they are not getting along. Please help!! :aimeeyork |
Well, my lab and Yorkie get along just great. I did have my lab first and brought my yorkie in as a baby so maybe that makes a difference.. |
1 Attachment(s) aww, give them some time! We have a lab and a yorkie and after the first week or so, they got along great! now they're best friends! Most of the time labs are really easy going, so if you give Daisy a while to get used to him, I'm sure they'll get along fine. But don't rush it, that will just stress them both out! BTW - Welcome to yorkietalk! |
thank ya so much for answering, this is great! as you can see it's my first time doing this. I called the vet and they said Daisy is just probably anxious and nervous but she should get over it in time. Thanks again!! :) |
Welcome to YT! LoL! I'm sure they will be best pals eventually. It just takes time to establish who's boss :) LoL! Good luck, and how about some pictures of your two pooches? We LOVE pictures on YT :D |
Sure they can. My parents have a black lab and I have 2 Biewers (1 I co-own) as well as a Japanese Chin / Poodle mix. All three of them get so excited to go to "Grandma and Grandpa's" house to play with the big dogs (they also have an English Setter). Of course size is always a worry, so I would keep a close eye on them when playing, but they definitely get along. Some dogs are just slower at adjusting to new additions. I'm sure with a little time they will become best buds. |
2 Attachment(s) YES most definatley. Labs are the most gentle breed i know (once they are over adolescence) My 2 get on great,Pippa is the boss now even though Jake's been here longer. |
My Yorkies are ok with other breeds . When Gazou is at dogshows , he share a xpen with his friend Tallia ( a Doberman Pinscher ) . |
It will just take some time and then they will get used to each other. :) I got 3 girls and they all love eachother now, but there was some jealolusy in the beginning. |

My lab and my yorkies love each other. Especially Wyatt. Everytime he goes outside the first thing he does is search for Sadie. I will attach a few pictures so you can see for yourself. Just give them time. My lab is the older of the two she is 6 years old and Wyatt is 7 months. |
Vivi loves my brother's black lab and they got along great. Labs are such sweet dogs...you just have to watch their big puppy paws when they are playing together. They should get used to each other quickly...Yorkies learn how to get out of the way and big dogs learn to watch out for the little dog :) Good luck :) |
[QUOTE=Yorkies learn how to get out of the way and big dogs learn to watch out for the little dog :) :)[/QUOTE] Well said :D very true |
thanks for your help! Thanks to all of you who responded to my question about my yorkie and lab getting along! It will take me awhile to figure out how to do this stuff and how to post pictures. Hope to talk to you all again. Thanks again! |
ya know, I hate to play devil's advocate, but I am going to.....Your lab and your yorkie might get along, and then again they might never get along. It all depends on the lab and the yorkie. They have personalities, just like people, and those personalities might not geet along. Several people have told you happy stories about labs and Yorkies getting along. I can tell you that I know of instances with not so happy (and even tragic) results. Please keep a close eye on them. In a worst case scenario, you might need to get a new home for one of the dogs. I do feel bad for your little Yorkie, who seems to have great anxiety over this change in her life. I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but I think it is important to say it. |
to alisonj Thanks for responding! I'm glad I'm getting a lot of feedback on this question, and I kind of have to agree with you and I am really worried that my Daisy (yorkie) is not going to be able to get along with Harley (lab). I know I've only had Harley for about 3 weeks now, but every single time I try to put them together, Harley naturally wants to pounce on her and play and Daisy just freezes and starts foaming at the mouth, which I still don't know what that means. Anyway, I will keep an eye on them and see if this is going to work out. Thanks for your response! |
It might be a very good thing to find a new home for the lab if he is to stay outside all his life . |
1 Attachment(s) My Tooties BESTEST FRIEND is my 80 lb lab... they are inseparable! Labs are usually smart enough to know when to be gentle with little ones, it is the cutest thing to see them together... we call them Mutt and Jeff... |
2 Attachment(s) I have a 60lb pitbull and a 40lb beagle/lab mix then I got my yorkie Holly. The first 2 nights were rough but they all love each other now. It just takes time. Here is a picture of my pit Taj and Holly kissing. |
Best friends Our yorkie is best friends with our daughters labradoodle. I admit I worry about those big lab paws and I don't like them playing chase. I can see the danger in that play. But they both have learned to play with a gentle mouth :) |
Someone had suggested to rehome the lab if its going to live primarily outside. Why just because it's an outside dog? I've had several labs and they have all been primarily outside dogs at the same time I had 2 yorkies that went in and out the dog door all the time to play with my labs in an entire fenced in back yard, and a very warm dog house, all the attention they could want and then some. Plus, they never wanted to be inside. It was all I could do the keep them in for the amount of time the vet said to when I got them spayed. As long as they are taken cafe of and have what they need what more could you ask for. |
