My first time wrapping Maezie
 

Here's a picture of Maezie after being put in wraps for the first time. It was also my first time putting wraps on any dog as well. I don't think I'm a fan of the plastic wraps, and I'll most likely use different wraps next week when I change them. There was a total of 20 wraps. Just the two that were on her face I ended up taking off cause she was chewing them the odd time. I might just band the hair there for the time being. I'm pretty lucky in that she doesn't mind having the wraps on her. And she's really good on the grooming table when I put the wraps on. I'll tell you, when we're out in public, everybody asks about why she has all those plastic little baggies on her. I'm already tired of explaining wrapping a coat to people. I think very few people have ever heard of that.

As a beginner I'm still learning. One thing I'm going to do different is use a bit less oil. What I did was put just a capful of olive oil and few squirts of coat handler conditioner in a bottle of warm water. I'd shake it all up and put it on Maezie after she was shampooed and rinsed. I didn't rinse off the oil and conditioner mixer. I just blow dryed and combed her. She's just a little bit too oily for my liking. So I'll just use a touch less oil next time. And I'll probably experiment with different types of oils as well. Maybe even just a diluted conditioner might work good too. We'll see.

Hi! I'm new here, getting familiarized with YorkieTalk before I get my first Yorkie in the next week or so. I can tell this site is going to be a godsend for me! May I ask what those wraps are for? Is your baby a show dog? I have so much to learn!:)

Are you keeping her hair wrapped because you are showing her? I've seen this before, but only in show dogs.

Your two babies are precious! I'm getting Tessa from Roseburg. Just got a call I can get her next week. I'm so excited. I'll have to get more familiar with this sight. I'm sure I'll be looking for advice. I've only had Llahsas and labradoodles so this itsybitsy girl is going to be a little scary😅. I've dreamed of having a small dog all my life. Can't believe it's going to happen! Did you get both your pups from the same breeder?

Hi! The wraps are just to prevent hair breakage. And I suppose they help keep her coat from getting dirty. Her coat started touching the ground, so I started wrapping it. I find the wraps let her play, run, go for walks, etc. without me worrying about hair breakage from her coat rubbing and dangling on the ground. I purchased Maezie as a pet and she's been spayed, but I am planning on showing her this summer. She'll compete in the altered class.

Yep. I'm planning on showing her this summer. Probably do at least a couple weekends of competing at dog shows. I'm looking forward to it and I'm thinking it should be a lot of fun!

Cherrybrook premium pet supplies. I'm from Canada and I normally wouldn't order something like that from a different country, but I do currently get shampoo and conditioner from there because I can't find or get ordered in coat handler, which I really like. I may have to start looking in different provinces for that. Anyways, they got show leads and some other cool stuff that you just don't normally see in your run of the mill pet stores. The wraps will last me forever cause I don't see no problem in reusing them, and a single order was over 200 wraps or so. They were cheap. And I really like the pink color. I think it looks good.

I find it helpful to tie up Scottie and Casie's hair too, purely to keep them cleaner and from sweeping the entire street during our walks.

Seeing that we go out several times a day for potty time, I don't have the time to wrap their hair like you have. :D But bravo!! Love the wrapping job on Maezie.

I have a question for both Canana and airplane. Chewie's hair is very much like your little one, airplane. Similar to Casie's.

Which shampoos do you use? Chewie's hair of course being so silky and it being thin I WANT to take her off of the puppy cut and start training her to be fine with the top knot. Sandy is so good with her, but she'd do the top knots way too tight, and now chewie is literally freaked out of them- and I don't blame her. It got so bad that the second and only other time I let her put one in her hair poor chewie bit my husband a few times as we were trying to take it out. She was in such pain that she literally didn't even realize it. Any way, I digress. I'd love to steal the hairstyle you have for Casie, lol.

I use a clarifying shampoo and then a moisturizing shampoo. So two shampoos and then a conditioner. I've been using coat handler for a clarifying shampoo and a conditioner for quite awhile. I really like it. I've been experimenting with different moisturizing shampoos lately. I just want the second shampoo to be cleansing but also moisturizing. I typically bathe my dogs at least once a week, or whenever they are dirty.

Topknots should never be done too tightly cause that will break the hair. It takes a bit of practice to do the topknots well. Many people make mistakes when doing them. My mother thinks it's so easy and she nearly wrecked my dogs' hair when she tried to do it.

I recommend using multiple bands and banding the topknot hair in two sections. This allows you to band it backwards so the hair doesn't flop in front of the face. And make sure you don't pull up the hair so tightly that you end up banding the skin on top of the head. And make sure the top knot doesn't pull up on the eyelids so you see the whites of the eyes. Those are two mistakes that I've seen people make. And I imagine the dog would find it pretty uncomfortable. If you get it right, it looks good and doesn't bother the dog. It takes a bit of practice.
