Hi! New but wanted to introduce Ringo :) Hi any Yorkie veteran owners that can give tips on housebreaking Yorkie pups? My Ringo is a bit more stubborn than my maltipoo pup .. |

Welcome to YT. Consistency is the key word for house breaking a pup. Always feed the same time every day. Wait 20 minutes, take pup out to potty area even if he doesn't make, even if he made in the house still take him out. Feed same time everyday, take out same time every day. Dogs get into a routine. Routine must be consistent, no deviation. Patience and consistency, pup will learn routine. You must be diligent with feeding time and potty time. Yorkies / terriers can take a bit more time to house break. My pups were 100% paper trained at 5 months old, then house breaking started, by 7 months old they were 100% house broken with NO accidents in the house. |

I have been repeatedly trying to use it and it wasn't working and I was wondering what I was doing wrong. |
Welcome to the site |
When I trained Dinky, I just kept taking him out every 2 hours. We also fenced him in the kitchen all day . It took weeks. Even when he needed to go, he would hold it until we got back in. he was 5 1/2 months old when we got him, and he had no clue about "outside." I was getting frustrated. Then finally one day he gave me this look, did it, and it was easy after that. He was very responsive to praise. We gave him freedom from the kitchen. then about 3 weeks later, he started "forgetting" about "Outside." So it was back into the kitchen. He was back to being trained in about 2 days! One thing I think is important. When he goes to the door, I respond very quickly. I figure if he is doing his part rain, shine, snow, rain, etc. that I should do mine and respect his urgency! |
