Meet Ziggy!
 

Hello!

This is my first post, and my first Yorkie, Ziggy. He is 14 weeks old and I have had him for two weeks. He's precious and affectionate but also gets very frisky and seems to want to chew on many things, so I have a lot of toys for him. He sleeps with me and only gets up to potty when I do. :) I'm working on taking him outside often, but he still has accidents sometimes indoors, especially if he's playing a lot. I work during the week but I'm able to come home at lunch to let him out and play with him. I try to play with him every morning so he is more relaxed when I leave for work, but I believe he probably sleeps most of the day anyway, if the weekends are any indication!

I want to get him in some training classes, obedience and agility, and also a puppy social group, but I am waiting until he gets his next round of shots. I don't know if males are more frisky or aggressive than females, and I am curious if anyone has thoughts on that. I also have been reading old threads on biting and it sounds like it might help if I try playing "Momma Dog" with him. I do indeed yelp when I make the mistake of getting a hand in there too close to his mouth while he's playing!

Also, I got him a tiny doggy harness and I try to take him on walks, but he likes to just plop himself on the sidewalk or grass and eventually I have to pick him up and carry him unless I am patient and just wait. But he does seem to like to walk when we are headed back home. Maybe he's just getting used to a new neighborhood? Or it could be the summer heat.

Sorry... couldn't help myself. lol Your furbie is just adorable. Only being 14 weeks old, he might get tired easily. Or maybe he's like my Zoey who only wants to walk 2-3 blocks and wants to be carried the rest of the way.

For training, I'd like to suggest YouTube. There are a lot of good stuff there. Had wonderful success with Magnus but little harder on Zoey as she's a LOT more stubborn. Patience would be my best advice for you. :D

Ziggy is so adorable. It's easy to see how much you love him. I'd say he's very lucky to have you for a mommy. Can't wait to see more pictures as he grows.

Very cute puppy. Take it slow--he has to develop the muscles for long walks.

welcome to Yt, Ziggy is adorable, I agree, 14 weeks is just a wee lil baby, he needs time to adjust to harness and leash and build up muscles for longer walks. I always found leash walking was distracting on my pups, different smells, moving objects and the just plopping them selves down. As he grows, gets use to walking, builds up those puppy muscles he will be fine. Training classes, obedience and agility classes are perfect for pups.Yorkies are high energy pups, these would be excellent choice of training.

Ooh, Ziggy looks like he's going to be a spectacular teapot! You should apply for the secret society later on!

For walks, your pup will usually lay down is he's tired on them. In the middle of summer that's not so far fetched if you're going out sometime between 10AM - 6PM or so. I didn't start taking Cook out on walks until 16 or 17 weeks, whichever was one week after her fourth round of puppy shots. But at that age they take lots of naps and have short bursts of energy. For a while I could get a guaranteed nap after a walk, but now at 15 months she still wants to play after that same walk.

The best way I got her ready for walks was training her on the leash in the back yard. It was also a good way to train potty commands at the same time.

Thank you for posting this - I have stopped worrying about the plopping down and I just pick him up and carry him for a while. Also I'm using the opportunity to try "Ziggy come!" after he has sat a bit and to my delight he usually runs to me so I can praise him and love on him.

I'm surprised at how much he understands. I think he may even be starting to sort of let me know when he wants out. Such a smart puppy!:aimeeyork
