New dog that I rescued 1 Attachment(s) :) I am brand new to the website. Here is my story. Right before thanksgiving a friend of mines father was doing work in NJ and he found a lost yorkie. He took it home and they decided they could not keep him. So i ended up taking care of him. I put ads on craigslist, petfinder, i called the local shelters, and police departments. The whole time i was searching for the owner the dog was having soooo many urine accidents. His breath was horrendous and people would not even go near him the smell was so bad. So i took him to the doctor where they examined him. I brought him to 2 different vets for opinions and both said that his prostate was very enlarged, and his teeth were rotting into the bone. I scheduled surgery for both his teeth and neutering. He had almost every tooth removed. He is doing alot better and is not having as many accidents but they still happen. His breath is like nite and day now but hes only on soft food and he can not eat hard food. He is soooo lovable its unbeleivable and he does not bark at all. He loves people and loves to nuzzle. After spending $700.00 in Vet bills I am definately keeping him and the vet said if it wasnt for the operation his teeth would of killed him the infection. He is on his 3rd round of antibiotics. He still has accidents and im not sure what to do. He is between 7-10 years old so im not sure there is much to do. Any advice is appreciated |

:bravo: to you for being such a hero!!! You make all of us proud and I know he is very lucky to have you as his new loving home! Have you decided what you're going to call him or does he already have a name? I can't believe he was so neglected before! He sure is cute - so big kudos to you and thanks for sharing your story! |

I wish I had some advise for you, but Bless you for taking care of this precious fellow!!! He is very luckyto have an angel like you to care for him and give him a forever home where he will be loved and well takencare off!! |

What a wonderful person you are! That baby now has a wonderful new home because of you! |

Welcome to YorkieTalk ! :wavey: Just be patient with him, he's going thru a lot and in time he will settle into his new forever home. That was so nice of you to rescue him. He deserves to be loved in his senior years too. :bravo: :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |

How wonderful you are! He deserves a good loving home with you! I rescued Hallie when she was 2.5 and potty training her is still a work in progress. It will take a lot of patience but I'm sure he will get the hang of it! I commend you for all you have done for him, he is adorable! |

You are an angel. Please keep us posted on his progress. |

As someone involved in rescue and all 10 of my dogs came through rescue hopefully I can answer some of your questions. This is a great thing you are doing for this little guy. He will respond well to your love but just remember he will never forget what happened but he will forgive. So you must go slow and be careful of any fast movements to see how he reacts to things. It is not unusal for poorly kept Yorkies at this age to lose their teeth and they can still eat small kibble if they want but hey I bet he loves his soft food. Just make sure it is very high quality as you have to make up for years of neglect. You are absolutely correct that if his teeth were not pulled the poison would have killed him by enlarging his heart. We had to put down 2 little girls because the damage was to far gone which was sad. You might never housetrain him but it is difficult to tell with his prostate problems. Normally I would tell you to invest in Belly Bands but I think you need to talk to the vet as there is some controversy with the urine still touching his penis and it might cause him more problems. I have my boys in belly bands. My best advise for the time being his to keep him in an xpen with a crate inside when you are gone but when you are home, put his harness on and leash him to you so he can't wander off to other parts of the home. Hopefully now that the two of you are probably getting on a schedule you will feed him and then take him outside and soon he will learn this schedule.. He will give you years of love and devotion and I swear Yorkie Rescue's can be more loving because they know you saved their life. Feel free to ask any questions.. |

My advice--Listen to Cindy (above). She knows everything there is about the special needs of rescued Yorkies. If you decide not to do Belly Bands, don't feel bad about keeping your little one confined to the kitchen with a gate, or even do crate training, especially when you are gone. It will make the cleanup a lot easier, and he might get the idea of going outside faster. |

Good Luck with your baby ,,and thanks so much for loving him .. Deb |
