We went to a barn hunt trial this weekend, but I ended up just not even finishing with Jackson. He did great at the instinct test last yr, but now he just seems concerned with marking on the hay (which is a disqualification) so we just gave up, lol, we're going to try lure coursing next as he's more into the CHASE vs. smell.

Anywho, he had a blast after the trial on this awesome piece of property, on the water. I started him out on a long line but took him off leash once I scoped out the place. He did fantastic.

Jackson LOOOVEDDD my friends German Coolie (also known as Australian Koolies sometimes)... amazing dog, love this breed. They played hard.

Geesh...it just doesn't seem fair that they disqualified for marking. My boys would never make it through.

Can they wear a belly band, or is that cheating??

Nope that's cheating :(

Apparently earthdog it is NOT a DQ so maybe we'll give earthdog a try.

The hay would be very hard to resist for most dogs including my own. Britster, could you do a make shift search area with hay, combine a bit of nose work with barn hunting to teach Jackson not to mark? When we did nose work 101, the first thing we did was teach them not to mark in the search area. Dogs were taken to a designated potty area where they were given the chance to potty before they enter the search area. After the search they were taken to the potty area again. So it's pee, search, then pee again.

Yeah I honestly should have practiced more before. Wish I had a rat to practice with too! haha. I think because it's an outdoor environment, hay, lots of other dogs have been there, etc, it's just his urge to mark. He never marks in agility etc, but he's also more focused with the treats in my hand (no treats allowed in barn hunt or I prob could have distracted him).

Lots of other things we could still try tho! I haven't crossed nosework off. It's just a matter of the $$. I wasted $60 this weekend ($20 for each trial - I had him signed up for 3). :(:(

It sounds like he had a blast! I love that last picture with the group of dogs. It looks like he's trying to boost himself up to be like the big dogs :p
