is my yorkie purebred? I jus purchased Isabella and she is ACA registered but i heard that was for mixed breeds only and AKC is for purebreds. I google pics of yorkies and she looks like it she also has a "star" on her chest can i please have your opinions |
ACA is the American Canine Association. It appears to be the favourite registry for puppy mill, pet stores and backyard breeders. Your puppy could be purebred or it could be mixed. Please post some pics of Isabella - we would love to see her whether she is purebred or mixed:) Where did you buy her from? How old is she? Welcome to Yorkie Talk:) |
I just saw your album. Isabella is absolutely adorable!! She looks a lot like Penni, my very first Yorkie, and she was a purebred.:) |
ACA was started by commercial dog breeders that were unhappy with AKC for implementing rules about DNA testing and requiring paperwork trails to be correct. Many had been banned from AKC and wanting to still sell their puppies as registered, they started their own for profit registry. AKC is nonprofit and will only register dogs that come from registered AKC parents. You still have to rely on the honesty and vigilance of the breeder when you buy AKC. You probably have a pure bred dog. She looks all yorkie. I think MOST registered dogs are pure bred if that is what they are supposed to be. But the chances of getting a dog that has something els somewhere in their pedigree is much GREATER in the non-AKC registries. Reputable breeders normally ensure all of their dogs are registered with AKC and do not send any money supporting these off-brand registries. There are some beautiful dogs that have been registered with them though. In fact, some of the puppies could have been from AKC parents, but maybe the breeder lost their AKC prviledges for failing DNA tests (in other words the parents listed on papers were NOT the real parents) or for failing inspections on their kennel. It could be that a relatively inexperienced breeder just decided to breed an ACA registered dog. It doesn't mean the dog is not a good one. Yours could be the best pet around, but Iwould NOT send any of your money in to this registry. Just spay your pet and don't worry about the papers unless you can have AKC registration. BTW Isabella is very CUTE!! Make sure you get her to a vet for her well puppy check up right away. I suggest new owners make an appointment to take the puppy straight to the vet from the breeder's home. Enjoy your new puppy -- so much joy in such a little pup! |
Thanks for the great info. Well hopefully honesty played a role in this purchase i still love her just tired of the lies from breeders which has happened to me twice but with shih tzu's |
Thanks! I bought her from my aunt who says her dad was a teacup yorkie and her mom was regular sized yorkie. Thanks for the info |

I had the same problem with Diva. She turned out to be a Yorkie-Chi, or Chorkie.. The breeder and I kept going back and forth. I finally got a DNA test done. Shut her right up. |

Pictures won't determine whether she's a purebred or not, as mixes can look like either parent or something totally different. I will say though, that your aunt is wrong; there is NO such thing as a teacup yorkie. They are all from one classification, Toy. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (Awards) |
My Yorkie was also ACA but I was able to register her AKC because of her pedigree. You might try that if you want to verify that her lines were AKC. I just emailed them a photo of my dog's ACA pedigree and put research in the subject line. They got back to me quickly saying that she qualified. |

I guess in the end if a pup is already in your life and you're commited to loving them for the rest of their lives, it really wouldn't matter anyway. :) |
