New Morkie mama
 

I've had my little Coco for 3 mos now, and she has attached herself to all of our hearts! I've forgotten about puppy behavior for the most part (my last love was just over 16 when I lost her), so I've been daily put to the test! I've read that some Yorkie owners give up on them because of the housebreaking issues, and I know this is very individual with each puppy. I will be outside with Coco (she does NOT like to be out there alone!) and is so easily distracted. She may/may not do anything, but before long there's a little present somewhere for me in the house. Suggestions? She is 5 mos old, so I thought that we begin to see some noticeable progress by now. My toy poodle caught on in less than 2 weeks.

Coco truly is wonderful with each of my adult kids, and my two grandbabies (ages 4 and 2). Company does produce a piddle puddle, but my vet suggested this may just be due to her immaturity. Another friend has a 4 yr old Morkie from this same breeder (different parents) and I fell in love with her personality. Coco is very different, but I can truly say I am smitten by all of her. She's asleep on my lap as I type (usually she's begging me to play when I need computer time).

Glad I found this site, and look forward to learning how to be a good Morkie owner. I know she's not 100% Yorkie, but I think she is predominantly Yorkie. I'm looking for a good hairstyle for her; she doesn't like to be brushed/combed and the mats are driving me crazy. I comb her every day, and Miracle Coat does wonders. Any other suggestions? She has more of a cotton-y coat than silky.

Your baby is going to be a wonderful addition to your family. If she is more Yorkie than Maltese you probably will have to take a little longer to potty train her. Of course, it's not always the case, but it tends to be pretty common. Both of mine (Mia & Max) took at least a year to train with no accidents. :) Max took longer because he just wasn't "into it"! LOL! He is all about being a boy and playing with toys. I honestly believe that he had NO clue what we were talking about. Mia, on the other hand, pee pee'd on the pad quickly but decided that she did not like people watching her poo.

Anyway, they are housetrained now, and it did take some patience... but they are well worth. You just have to be consistant and use positive reinforcement.

The best tip I can give you is to "not" free feed. If you have her on a schedule you can time when she needs to go do her business after consuming food - you'll know when to take her and show her where to do it. :thumbup:

Oh, and you probably should post this in the general or training forum. This one is for pictures. I know it takes time to get around here if you haven't been on before.

Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk. We, too, are going through potty training again, with our new rescue. Patience, going outside with your furbaby, and keeping them in a gated area when unsupervised are all things I recommend. Good luck and congratulations.

Coco is lovely, and will be a wonderful addition to your family. My female was 4 yrs. when I got my now 8 month old mutant, Jesse. He is 10+ lbs. now and I love it. It's like holding a toddler...hehehehe. I, too, forgot about puppy behavior, but I can easily say that it takes no less than 4 years to train a small dog.... :D My Lilly is great now. She is pad trained when she has to be (as in the case of bad weather), and at night I take her to the grass, tell her to pee pee, and she goes. The male, however, is also easily distracted by insects, birds, people, noises, any visual or auditory stimuli. They are just like children and are checking out their new world, a world that can be more than overwhelming to a tiny little creature like your furbaby. Yorkies are Terriers and tend to be a bit neurotic anyway, so patience is required. They are, however, the most loving, protective and loyal dogs on the planet....and that is my opinion....only because I have two in my face giving me kisses each morning....yikes!!!! Let me know if you need a ear or some advice. I have only owned this breed my entire life and am a wealth of useless information.....;) Your friends in furbabies....Lisa, Lilly & Jesse

I appreciate the welcoming comments and the encouragement; I knew going into this that it would require patience. We have several GREAT days of success, then a few setbacks. BUT, we ARE making progress! Coco has so much personality that she truly compensates for the inconvenience of the messes. The up side? They are little messes (we once had a Golden Retriever...).

It is nice to find a community of kind-hearted people who have in common their love of little fur-people (I'm convinced Coco has no idea she's a dog). I really enjoy looking at all the photos. Just like people, they are so individual.

Tonight as I bathed and combed Coco's beautiful coat, I was simply admiring her beauty. She's a bit of work, but she doesn't seem to mind unless I have to work out a mat. I'm learning that they key to her cooperation is that I attend to her coat on a daily basis. We're both a lot happier!

Donna & Coco....You might want to go on Amazon.com and order a product called Groom-Aid by Evsco. I have not found it cheaper anywhere else. You will looooove it!!!:animal36 It's a grooming spray that is used for dry brushing and after bathing. You apply it on a damp coat, head to toe, and rub into the coat and down the legs....then blowdry. It has that "fresh from the groomer" smell. It's incredible, and I don't know what I would do without it. My female has that silver silky hair that knots when you look at her... :) It greatly deters breakage, and also keeps the hair from knotting. One can lasts for months. :thumbup: Lisa, Lilly & Jesse

Yah I hate to say it....but it took me a year to get Daizy totally trained..and yet..we just had an accident the other day...so not sure what that was about...and Tulip is 7 months..and she understand the word "POTTY"..as soon as I say it she's running for the front door as fast as she can go...but she had an accident this evening...soooooooooo I have a feeling it will be a few months more for "completely" housebroke...ugh...and even then I will probably not see them as being totally trained...lol But we're getting there....SO like others have said...be patient....keep working with her...maybe you won't have to wait as long as some of us have..since you have some Maltese in her!!! Keep your fingers crossed..but be prepared for the long haul...just in case!!

For all that aren't aware, Yorkies are infamous for not wanting to poop in front of others. So, with that in mind, the wee wee pad has to be concealed...real easy for apartment living....:rolleyes: Mine used to pee pee on the pad, get a treat, and then poop under the couch end table. One day, I'm having my coffee, watching TV and smelling something FOUL!!! Well, low and behold, under the end table just to my right, there layed one of Lilly's tootsie rolls. We started going outside after that. They don't stay as clean, but it certainly eliminates the "close but no cigar" moments, like when they place their front paws on the pad and then proceed to wee off the side....:animal36

Welcome to YT! I too have a Morkie and I can relate to what you are going through. As long as I'm seeing progress all is good. Take it one day at a time and everything will work out. Coco is adorable! :)
