Need some advice from soon to be Yorkie owner
 

Hello to you all! My name is Jeanne and I am so new to this forum, that I do not even have my Yorkie yet! I have always loved Yorkies, but never had the opportunity to own one. I will try to give the condensed version, but recently, my golden retriever of 14 years had to be put to sleep, my 18 year old daughter ran away with her boyfriend days after turning 18, and now my 20 yr old daughter is leaving for college in Italy for 3 months! I have been very emotional and decided it was time for me to get the Yorkie puppy I have always wanted. Soooo... I got on the internet and found a puppy that looked so adorable and perfect, trusted the breeder I was emailing who told me she was a "teacup" and should weigh between 2 and 3 lbs full grown, with a very sweet personality (which was so very important to me...) and, here goes... I bought her without even seeing her in person! Was that a crazy thing to do??? Even though I am so excited for her to arrive (she is being shipped to me in 4 days, flying 3/4 the way accross the county)... I have been reading so much in your forums that now I am a little apprehensive and hope I did not act too spontaneously! I learned from your forums that there is no such thing as a teacup... (I have always wanted he smallest little Yorkie I could find) and now I am wondering how can the breeder predict her size? I was told by the breeder that she is a little over a pound at 3 months, with a baby doll face (is that a certain kind of face?) and will grow to be 5 inches to the shoulder and 6-8 inches in length. Is it possible to predict that at 3 months? And, I am hoping she really does have the sweet personality I was told she had... I have my 9 and 10 yr old children still home with me, and my 12 yr old baby Smudge (my shoodle, 1/2 toy poodle and 1/2 s**tzu) so I hope she loves childen and other dogs too... I am so excited for her to arrive, but scared too... I hope I did the right thing! Sorry if I rambled on so much, I just have so enjoyed reading all your entries and thought some of you might be able to relate, although I guess that even if you were to tell me I did make a mistake, I guess it is too late now! 4 more days till she arrives... Hello and welcome to Yorkietalk. As you mentioned this is an awesome sight to ask questions, read stories, share picture's of our fur-babies and everything else inbetween...

It sounds like you just are anxious to receive your new little Yorkie. The excitement can tend to make one worry, try to relax and know in just a few days your little one will be here.

Correct, there is no such thing as a "tea-cup"..It usually is just a breeder's way of justifying a higher cost to charge for their Yorkie pups. Yorkie's can be small, medium, even bigger yet but they are all just still Yorkies. I have seen through my own personal Yorkie expierences that the smaller ones can tend to have extra special health concerns. The smaller one's need to keep their sugar levels regulated, their bones are real tiny so even the shortest jump can be damaging to their joints/ligaments. Also, I read you had children younger in your home, it's important for your new fur baby not to be stepped on accidentally or smashed in a closing door by kids walking out.

You will be busy these next 4 days getting prepared for your new pup, so that will help take some of your tension away. New bed, kennel/crate, food, dishes, safe chew toys, etc...Also, you might want to stop by your vet for some Nutrical. It is wonderful for the little babies. It is a health supplement that keeps their sugar regulated. Also, your new pup will be nervous coming home and the Nutrical helps with the stress levels in their bodies also. It's a lifesavor if your little one does go into a hypoglaucemic shock.

Hi (again) I forgot to mention in my last reply to your post regarding the size prediction of your little one. Most breeders have a size chart that they go by, unfortunatley I cannot remember what their calculations are but anyway, it gives the breeder's an estimate weight range that the Yorkie should (not always) fall under.

Most contracts from the breeders or their web sites will specify that they cannot guarantee the size of the Yorkie. If your new fur-baby's contract gives you a guarantee on the size then I am very very surprised.

there just is no absolute positive way to guarantee any size at all. Mother nature takes it's course with these little ones.

I totally understand you being nervous, but I guess the best thing you can do now is wait and see. I'm sure everything will turn out ok though. One good thing from what I read in your post is that the breeder wouldn't give you the pup until it was 3 months. A lot of breeders give up the babies at 2 months, but after being on this discussion board I've read and learned that 3 months is really better.

It is hard to predict their exact size, but from what you said (a little over one pound at 3 months), it seems like your baby will be quite small. My little guy is Hercules and he's almost five months. When I got him at 10 weeks he was 2 pounds and at 4 1/2 months he was 3.8 pounds. Just to give you an idea of another yorkie.

Well good luck and make sure you tell us how everything goes when your little one arrives. Do you have a name picked out for her yet?? Make sure you post pictures too!! :D

Thank you so much for your replies... You are right, I am very excited for my new little baby girl to arrive! I will keep you posted, she arrives sometime Friday. I have lots of names I am thinking of, but I was hoping when I see her, I will know the right name from her personality! Some of my favorites are: Joya, Treasure, Trinket, Pinkkisses, Tiffany, Enchanted, Sparkles, Tuscany, Jamaica, Channel, Chardonnay, Kauai, MaiTai, KeAloha ( Hawaiian for Beloved)... ( I love Hawaii so I was thinking of a Hawaiian name maybe...) As you can see, I have quite a variety! I can hardly wiat for her to arrive. I am going to stop worrying and just look forward to her arrival... I am sure I might have paid too much for her, but that does not even matter at this point! I just want a sweet, tiny Yorkie puppy to join my family! Thanks for the tips, I will get some of the Nutrical for her. I will post a photo as soon as I can! I am also getting her a bed, some toys and some little bows for her head!

Jeanne, first of all congratulations on your new upcoming baby!!! She will bring you much joy I'm sure!! I know after reading some posts on here you might be a little apprehensive, but dont let that spoil your excitement. Just think positive and positive things happen right?? I was soooo excited when I got Dolce...just driving there I told my sister (who was going about 80 at the time) "Can u drive any faster????" She looked at me like I was crazy but I just wanted to get her so badly!!! :) I cannot wait to hear all about your baby and see pics of her. Oh and about the names...usually it is best to use a name with 2 syllables...anything longer and they tend not to get it. I really like MaiTai...that is so cute!! You will definitely know when you get her home what you should call her though. Please feel free to ask anything on this site...there are so many wonderful and knowledgeable people on here. We were all first time Yorkie owners at one point or another and had the same questions as you. Good luck with your baby and tell us all about her as soon as you can!!! :D

Oh no! She has a stomach virus and has to be treated for 10 days on meds before the vet will clear her to be shipped... I am so disappointed, but now it sounds like I will not get her until Feb 4th. It is so hard to wait, but I know it is important that she is healthy before I get her. Another long week to wait!....

What a disappointment for the time being. Your baby is going to be so little! I know you're eager with anticipation!

This is general knowledge but just wanted to mention that you should schedule a visit with your vet for your new baby as soon after arrival as possible. Usually contracts specify that you have 72 hours to have the pup checked out.

February 4th will be here before you know it!!

Oh my goodness! She is the cutest puppy ever! She is finally here and my entire family is in love with her! I have never ever seen a puppy so tiny! She is so small everytime she walks or runs (actually, she prances) everyone laughs because she looks like a stuffed toy with batteries or a wind up toy! She is absolutely the cutest, most precious and adorable little puppy we have ever seen...We are so glad we are now Yorkie owners. Well worth the wait... She is so sweet and loving and seems so excited to be in our family... we are amazed... My children want to call her Tiffany. Hopefully I can figure out how to post a photo!

Congratualtions on your new pup! You sound like an excellent owner so im sure the new addition to the family will feel right at home.. It is very important though that your pup does take Nutrical 3 times a day(at least thats what my breeder told me) when she is a puppy.. but after a few months you can give her once a day or so...

I have not checked in for awhile, busy, busy with Tiffany, as we have decided to name our precious new baby! She is a doll and if I can figure out how to post a photo, I will do that, so far though I cannot fifure out how to do that! Any help? The only problem that I am having with Tiffany is a feisty streak when I try to brush her or put a sweater on her, or take something out of her mouth that she has picked up and should not have. She actually growls and tries to bite. I am sad about this personality trait and trying to teach her she cannot do that with us. The rest of the time she is a doll, playful, VERY playful, sweet and loving. SHe turns vicious though when brushed, etc! Any advice there? I am mortified because of course, brushing daily is something she will have to put up with and I was hoping it would be a relaxing activitiy for her. Maybe she just needs to get used to it and outgrow her anger at the brushing??? I hope so! I took her to the vet for her shots and she now weighs 1 ib 6 oz~ Still tiny, and so much personality in such a tiny creature! We just love our TIffany!!!

Posting a picture is pretty simple, once you have written you post, scroll down, under the tab 'additional options', you will see 'attach files', click 'manage attachments' , then click browse, locate your photo , click 'open', then click 'upload' !!!! submit rmessage/reply/post and your all set!! Hope I didn't confuse you. If anyone has an easier way please share!

Oh no! I tried it and it said the file was too large! It only accepts files that are 200 and mine was over 400. I am not sure how to make it any smaller! Do you know?

Hi. Ok, First off I apologize for having to make this message so long but it's the only way I know how to explain it as it was shown to me...

In order to post pics with any computer one might have, normally they have to be resized to fit.

Go to your internet and open up Irfanview.com
You will need to download the FREE 3.95 version.

Once downloaded open it up and click on the little folder icon on the top left hand side. It should bring up all your pics and you browse through and open up the pic you want.

Ok, if you have made it this far and have your pic opened up, go to the top menu again and click on "image", then scroll down to where it says resize/reshape and click on that. On the pop up box put a "set to new size" and i usually key in 750. The rest will adjust itself. Also, make sure "pixels" has a dot beside it.

Then go back to the top and click on file and save as whatever name you want followed by .jpg


Ok, now if you have made it this far. Go into the post you want to attach a pic to. After typing your post, go to the bottom to where it shows "advanced options" or something and click on the "manage attachments". You should then get a pop up that says BROWSE. find the pic in your files that you just previously resized and click on it to open. Click on the upload button and once done close the window. Ok, now when you submit your message don't hit the "submit message" button right below your post, scroll down to the other one underneath the "attachment" section and click on that submit message icon.

Good luck. It took me forever too but thanks to Prissy012899 and Fasteddie they both were my lifesavers with all this picture taking stuff.

I have another alternative that I like to use doesn't involve any downloading of programs check it out!

I'm guessing its it best used for PC or anyone with the standard Paint program.

first click Start > Programs > Accesories > PAINT

once the program has opened at the top go to File > Open

once you've found your desired photo click Open the photo should now appear in the window

return to the top toolbar and look for IMAGE click Image > Stretch/Skew

here is where you resize the photo under the box titled 'Stretch' there should be two 100's in the boxes 'Horizontal' and 'Vertical' - replace the two 100's with two 40's click OK

return to the top toolbar File > Save

your photo is now resized!

Congrats on your new baby! I have a new one, as well. Among the many things I'm reading is the "Puppies for Dummies" book. It says to call a professional if your puppy growls when being brushed.

I have an 8 month old yorkie. I got him two months ago. I love him. He is wonderful. I really have no complaints except for the potty breaking. I am having some problems with that. I hear that kind of goes with the territory.
