come here! has anyone got any ideas about teaching a 18 week old yorkie to come when she is called? :( |
yes! start with treats, i use pieces of my dog's food. show her the treat and say come! in a stern voice, but don't yell at her. if she doesn't get it make sure not to punish her, she doesn't really know it yet. unless she is just ignoring you. then use a treat still, show her the treat say come and as soon as she comes praise her. don't go crazy until she gets to you because what if she decides to turn around and go back, then she'll think she's doing the right thing. make a HUGE deal when she comes. go crazy praising her. after she gets good at it stop using the treat just say, come! then if you want to take it to another level you can teach her to sit when she comes. good luck!! |
Good luck with that. My little guy is 13 weeks and he does know sit, and now we have moved onto down. Then we will work on come and stay. He's so full of energy and get distracted easily. I think Megan gave you good advice, and I will even take it when the time comes. |
We taught sit first with treats. Ask the dog to sit or put him in sitting position. Then after he gets that tell him to come. We also used hand signals in additon to saying the command. |
I started working with logan on come because he's too friendly and takes off to meet new people. He's only 10 wks old so we're started slowly. We just use his food for treats (he's a pig so any extra food is dandy), we keep them in a ziplock bag. I started taking the bag out with him. I'll tell him to come and if he doesn't I shake the bag a little and he comes a running. I then make him sit, praise him, and give him a treat. He learns pretty quickly what behaviors will get him food. Another idea is put him on a long leash. Make him stay, walk to the end of the leash, then say come. If he does not reel him over to you with the leash. This will teach him what behavior you expect when you say come and also won't allow him to run off in the other direction. |
I would agree to start with treats...we use something that is different from the normal as to really get their attention when working on commands....just be patient and work on it constantly...it will take some time to get it down all the time but with lots of work, they will soon understand what you are asking for... |
